Basically anything in the top 20 for either gender. I hear of yet another baby [name_f]Emily[/name_f] or [name_u]Mason[/name_u] and just think to myself, “Did you just give up after the first 5 minutes of considering a name?” Now, I know this isn’t the case most of the time, and people really do love the names, but they seem to lack inspiration.
I know a guy named [name_u]Sloan[/name_u]. I had never heard the name before, and then I came here. I’m so confused as to why you all think it’s such a good name for girls. All I hear is masculine. I guess because of the aforementioned [name_u]Sloan[/name_u] that I’m acquainted with.
I have a love/hate relationship with most [name_u]Berry[/name_u] favorites. [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f] is way to boring. I know about 50 of them, I swear. [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f] is my “plain [name_f]Jane[/name_f].”
In my experience, it’s because they don’t know they can go out of the box. They definitely don’t put a lot of thought into names. It isn’t that they don’t care, it’s just not as big of a deal to them as it is to us. Also, it seems they go with family names to honor someone they love. And when that someone was a “[name_u]Mason[/name_u]” or “[name_f]Emily[/name_f]” then you get another little one running around with that name. For example, a friend of mine is having a baby that she’s naming [name_m]Justin[/name_m] to honor her brother who died last year.
[name_m]HENRY[/name_m]! I cannot stand it and I see it absolutely everywhere. Everything else has been said… Beatrice/Beatrix, Imogen, etc.
My taste is very simple, so I can’t really think of something I like that everyone hates. [name_u]Sailor[/name_u] is a guilty pleasure, but that’s about it.
Everyone seems to like: [name_u]Harper[/name_u], [name_m]Asher[/name_m], [name_m]Archer[/name_m], [name_m]Miles[/name_m], [name_u]Elias[/name_u], [name_m]Milo[/name_m], [name_m]Hugo[/name_m], [name_u]Piper[/name_u], [name_f]Grace[/name_f], [name_f]Anna[/name_f], [name_f]Lila[/name_f], [name_f]Layla[/name_f], and various other occupation/surnames that I can’t stand.
A lot of people really don’t like [name_u]Vesper[/name_u] and [name_m]Fergus[/name_m] (and probably many other names I love), but I don’t care. [name_m]Fergus[/name_m] is so handsome, I love it.
[name_f]Persephone[/name_f] and [name_f]Imogen[/name_f]. Yuck.
I really cannot understand the appeal of the [name_m]Mac[/name_m]- names: [name_u]Mackenzie[/name_u], [name_f]Mckenna[/name_f], [name_f]Makayla[/name_f], etc. They make me think of [name_m]McDonald[/name_m]'s.
I also dislike jockish modern names without history or substance: [name_u]Riley[/name_u], [name_u]Peyton[/name_u], [name_m]Colton[/name_m], [name_u]Carson[/name_u], [name_u]Reagan[/name_u]. Bad enough on a boy, but why on earth would you give a girl a name that’s not only meaningless and instantly dated, but not even gender-appropriate?
Speaking of which, -son names on girls bug the crap out of me. [name_u]Addison[/name_u], [name_u]Madison[/name_u], [name_u]Emerson[/name_u]…awful.
I also find most place names absolutely ridiculous. I shudder every time I see a child named [name_u]London[/name_u] or [name_u]Brooklyn[/name_u]. You realize your child is going to be laughed at if they ever visit these places, right?
And I detest syllable mash-up names. [name_f]Kaylie[/name_f], [name_f]Kyleigh[/name_f], [name_u]Brinley[/name_u], [name_f]Braylee[/name_f], [name_u]Jaden[/name_u], [name_f]Jayleen[/name_f], [name_f]Gracelyn[/name_f], [name_f]Kinsley[/name_f], [name_f]Kinley[/name_f], ad nauseum. A string of trendy syllables signifying nothing.
[name_f]Emily[/name_f] or [name_f]Amelia[/name_f]. [name_f]Emily[/name_f] was (and is) overused, and [name_f]Amelia[/name_f] is mostly for people who want an alternative. To me, [name_f]Amelia[/name_f] also has that unbearable (meel) sound.
A lot of my favorite popped up in here
I can’t stand [name_f]Hazel[/name_f] (this seems to be #1 berry name for last month) everyone wants to name their little girl [name_f]Hazel[/name_f].
First of all it’s getting too repetitive and hardly unusual.
Secondly I never really liked this name anyway. It seems dated and not attractive to me.
I also dislike [name_f]Ruth[/name_f] which a friend wants to use. I want to talk her out of it.
I dislike [name_f]Clementine[/name_f] with the old song about the fat lady drowning.
I also dislike Sloan for either gender. And Sullivan! Oh, well.
Names I like that no one else does well I like [name_f]Josephine[/name_f] and [name_f]Wilhelmina[/name_f] nn [name_f]Mina[/name_f] and [name_f]Adelaide[/name_f] and [name_m]Henry[/name_m] (all from your lists)
I also like [name_f]Nadine[/name_f] and [name_f]Irene[/name_f] and names like that seem a little dated.
I like most of the top 20 names. I chose [name_f]Emily[/name_f] for my log in. I like [name_f]Sophia[/name_f], and [name_f]Isabella[/name_f] etc. I do think [name_f]Emma[/name_f] which seemed popular when I was kid little seems a little well used. (I knew a lot of Emmas my age no Emilys though, and now it’s #2.) Anyway it’s the common names that makes the unusual ones stick out.
I think this is a little judgmental. [name_m]Just[/name_m] because it’s in the top 20 doesn’t mean it lacks inspiration. And frankly to just lump all top 20 names into a “I can’t stand them” category I find to be actually quite un-inspired. [name_f]Do[/name_f] you actually dislike the names or just the fact that they are popular?
For many families choosing names there may have been something else at work such as a tribute to another family member or the desire for a classic name. In previous times there wasn’t such a desire for everyone to have totally one-off unique and weird names as their is now and some folks may still feel this way. We have [name_m]Henry[/name_m] [name_m]Oliver[/name_m] for our sons name and the popularity of [name_m]Henry[/name_m] could bother me less. I love that it’s popular because he’ll never have to worry about spelling it or dealing with pronunciation issues.
Most of all - We didn’t pick the name to be unique. We picked it because [name_m]Henry[/name_m] was a family name and a tribute to his great grandfather who passed away when I was pregnant and we wanted something classic, timeless and meaningful to us. To say we (and all those who have a name in the top 20) gave up after 5 minutes pretty offensive and stereotypes quite a large group of people.
[name_m]Just[/name_m] my opinion.
I dislike [name_f]Hazel[/name_f], [name_f]Imogen[/name_f], [name_f]Clementine[/name_f], [name_u]Sloane[/name_u], [name_f]Olive[/name_f], [name_u]Brooklyn[/name_u], [name_f]Eugenia[/name_f], [name_f]Harriet[/name_f]/[name_f]Henrietta[/name_f], [name_f]Agnes[/name_f], [name_f]Agatha[/name_f].
I guess the name that I love that has gotten so-so responses is [name_f]Eliana[/name_f]
I totally agree.
I don’t see the attraction to [name_f]Emma[/name_f], [name_f]Leah[/name_f] or [name_f]Claire[/name_f].
Another one I’ve noticed popping up quite a lot recently is [name_f]Sienna[/name_f], I’m not a massive fan either.
As for names I like but nobody else does, irl none of my friends like any of my favourites! I’d probably go with [name_f]Mabel[/name_f].
[name_f]Mabel[/name_f], hazel, and names like that
[name_f]Olive[/name_f]/[name_f]Olivia[/name_f]… Though I like [name_f]Livia[/name_f]
[name_u]Madison[/name_u]/[name_f]Madelyn[/name_f]/[name_f]Madeline[/name_f]/[name_f]Maddie[/name_f]- so unbelievably overused! At least where I live!
Super long harsh sounding names like [name_f]Clementine[/name_f], [name_f]Seraphina[/name_f], [name_f]Persephone[/name_f], etc.
I really like Mackinley… And I have yet to find a single other person who doesn’t hate it. I also really like [name_f]Adelyn[/name_f]. And Anistyn, [name_f]Heidi[/name_f], [name_f]Hadleigh[/name_f]/[name_f]Calleigh[/name_f].
Not a fan of [name_f]Catherine[/name_f]. I knew so many growing up. It’s one of those names that feels so common and plain, it doesn’t even really register when I hear it. And I’m sure everyone’s aware I’m not a fan of girl names that end in the letter -a. There are a few exceptions.
As far as something I like that no one else does…hmmm.
I’m keen on boy names for girls, and obviously Nameberry isn’t. I think it’s simply because I’ve yet to find a girl name I like as much as a boy name. Or the ones I do like are too obscure to be usable. I do rather love [name_f]Winifred[/name_f].
I don’t care for unique spellings, surname-type names such as [name_m]Jackson[/name_m], [name_u]Sawyer[/name_u], [name_u]Madison[/name_u] etc., (unless they are a family name), names less than 100 years old such as [name_u]Brooklyn[/name_u], invented names such as [name_f]Neveah[/name_f], and names that are too out there such as [name_u]Story[/name_u] and [name_f]Persephone[/name_f]. I don’t think any of these names are horrible, just not my style.
I’m a bit different in that I love classic names, regardless of their popularity. I’d much rather name a daughter [name_f]Emily[/name_f] rather than [name_u]Story[/name_u], because I would be nervous a name like [name_u]Story[/name_u] would limit her future career opportunities. I also think of the 30 [name_m]Rock[/name_m] quote “There will never be a president [name_u]Ashton[/name_u], a Dr. [name_f]Katniss[/name_f], or a non-sexually confused [name_u]Lorne[/name_u]”
I cannot stand [name_f]Violet[/name_f]. It sounds so horrid to me.
I really like [name_f]Edith[/name_f] but a lot of people don’t. Doesn’t bother me though. [name_f]Edith[/name_f] is a great girls name.
Like you, I [name_f]LOVE[/name_f] [name_f]LOVE[/name_f] [name_f]LOVE[/name_f] [name_u]Sawyer[/name_u] for a girl. But nobody else seems to like it! ![]()
I like most traditional classics but not [name_f]Charlotte[/name_f] or [name_f]Imogen[/name_f]. Neither sound appealing to me. I also don’t care for any [name_f]Em[/name_f] names , [name_f]Emily[/name_f], [name_f]Emma[/name_f], [name_f]Emmaline[/name_f], etc. they strike me as over done.
I love some vintage, grandmother names that haven’t come back in popularity - [name_f]Martha[/name_f], [name_f]Nancy[/name_f], and [name_f]Lois[/name_f].
I also love some 1950/1960’s names that are bery out out of fashion: [name_f]Donna[/name_f], [name_f]Pamela[/name_f], and [name_f]Janice[/name_f].
I have a LOT to say in this. To start, the name [name_f]Katniss[/name_f] is absolutely horrid to me. When I first heard it, I thought that someone had said [name_f]Cat[/name_f]-piss. It sounds gross and no middle name will ever flow well with this. Go with a much better [name_f]Katherine[/name_f].
Next, there’s the name [name_f]Zara[/name_f]. It’s become very popular this year. I actually hate this name. [name_f]Zara[/name_f] sounds alien and weird in a bad way. I don’t like [name_f]Sara[/name_f]/ [name_f]Sarah[/name_f] either, but this is much worse. It just isn’t a pretty name for anyone.
Then there’s the name [name_f]Ottilie[/name_f]. I don’t even know how to pronouce [name_f]Ottilie[/name_f]! I can’t believe how popualar it’s becoming! No one would be able to pronounce her name, and she would be miserable! I also don’t think “O” names are that appealing. I don’t know why, I just don’t like any O names.
I also has a certain hate for the names [name_f]Agatha[/name_f] and [name_f]Isla[/name_f]. [name_f]Agatha[/name_f] reminds of an old hag. I’m sorry to anyone who is named [name_f]Agatha[/name_f], or anyone who’s child is named this, but I really don’t like this name. The same with [name_f]Ilsa[/name_f]-- it doesn’t look right and reminds me of an elderly woman.
OK, that’s all. I only did girls names because if I did boys too, I would be up all night finishing my list. Also, I’m really sorry if I offended anyone or if I sounded rude, but I really needed to get that off my chest. Thanks!
