I need a more socially appropriate nickname to use with my son; I’ve just been saying, “is it boob time?” so far and I want something a little cuter and less hit-you-over-the-head-with-it.
So far I’ve heard:
Nums/Num-nums/nummies
Mommy milk
Boobie juice
Bitty
Nursies
Nips/nippies
Milkies
When I am home and talking to the baby, I always ask her “Does Saela want some milkies?” Other than that, it is more just a statement of, “Time to feed the baby” or “The baby needs to eat” or “Saela is hungry.” Everyone knows I breastfeed so they just know that’s what I’m talking about.
We called it noms. After four months when we did a mix of formula and breastfeeding, then it became “mom noms” as opposed to bottle noms. Oh man, the things that come so naturally that seem so strange when you’re not a parent, lol.
We don’t really have a socially appropriate name for it. My hubby calls it titty time. I just say its time to feed her or she is hungry. As another poster said, everybody knows that I breastfeed and where I live most women do, so it’s not a big deal at all.
My husband always called it titty time too, lol!! Luckily only around the house!!
I called it Milkies sometimes (when talking to my son) but I don’t remember ever having a particular word for it. When talking to other people I would just say ‘he needs feeding’ or ‘I need to feed him’ which is pretty self explanatory I think, as most people knew I was BFing him.
I don’t currently have one little enough to breastfeed, but I’d just usually say he’s hungry and people get the memo. Sometimes I just told people I needed to nurse the baby, but I’m in general a very straight-forward person.
To baby: In ridiculous baby voice “Is da baby hungy?” and “[name_f]Lulu[/name_f] want num nums”
To everyone else: Nothing anymore, I just pull out the boob. Usually the fact that I’m opening/pulling down my shirt and [name_f]Lu[/name_f] starts acting hungry is enough notice. [name_u]Baby[/name_u] wants what baby gets and I was never particularly shy in the first place – definitely not now. I try to be as discreet as possible, but sadly [name_f]Lu[/name_f] doesn’t like anything over her face so I figure her head provides enough coverage. I’ve referred to myself as a milk machine.
I’m slightly confused… why is a cute or sanitized term necessary for the general public? Why not just say, “It’s time to feed the baby now” or “I need to breastfeed now” or “He’s hungry?”
Or say nothing at all and just do it?
In our house, privately, we call it a “suck-suck.” As in, “does baby want a suck-suck?” In public I might ask him if he was hungry or wanted a snack.
I love this question! The responses are great to read also. My mom breastfed all 5 of us and it was either time to feed the baby or “Nunnie” time. There was a Nunnie chair. Me and my brothers are all 2 years appart (roughly) and the youngest breastfed untill he was 3. He could speak and would climb into the chair and ask for Nunnie time. He also started to learn anatomy and I recall giggling at about ten years old when He would tell my mother “Show me dat Eepo!” (eepo = nipple) She also had to remind him not to try and pull her shirt down at the playground because he was hungry. lol.
For me I tended to call it time to feed the baby.
