We’re leaning towards naming our baby [name]Roscoe[/name], but might shorten it to “[name]Ross[/name]” more commonly. I had asked a few ladies in my moms group about what they thought about “[name]Ross[/name]” for a boy (These moms all have little Jakes, Ethans, Dylans and Aidans themselves) and I was quite shocked at how badly they dissed it. Is it REALLY that far out of favor these days?
[name]Roscoe[/name] is a family name for us, we don’t so much care about the Dukes of [name]Hazzard[/name] reference, and really don’t think today’s kids even know the pop culture aspect of it, and [name]Ross[/name] on FRIENDS was my favorite character on the show, so those aspects don’t bother me. What bugs me is that I thought [name]Ross[/name] was a decently average name for a little boy, and was flipped on my noggin to find out that people really disliked it.
[name]Just[/name] in and of itself, is there something about “[name]Ross[/name]” that I am missing???
And if it matters, we’re far from “top 100” baby namers ourselves. Our kids are [name]Gemma[/name], [name]Zahra[/name], [name]Isla[/name], and Quinnah ([name]Quinn[/name]-uh, not [name]Kean[/name]-uh), so we thought [name]Roscoe[/name], being more of a Scottish derivation would sort of fit with our sibset.
So, what’s the lowdown on using the nickname “[name]Ross[/name]”??? Is it really that far off the radar? Further than [name]Roscoe[/name]???
I think it’s a nice name/nickname. When I read [name]Ross[/name] I definitely thought of the character on Friends, it’s not a bad association though and it doesn’t bother you so I’d say go for it!
I really like [name]Roscoe[/name] nn [name]Ross[/name]. I’ve always liked [name]Ross[/name]. Sometimes its hard to pick something not mainstream just for that very reason. I’d be thrilled to meet lil [name]Roscoe[/name] nn [name]Ross[/name]!
I agree completely–it has a bit of a 90s vibe because of Friends but it’s a solid name. [name]Ross[/name] being a nn for [name]Roscoe[/name] in your case makes it even better!
First of all, [name]Roscoe[/name] is a great name. It’s vintage, spunky, handsome, and so underused. [name]Ross[/name] is a cool nickname. I know a [name]Ross[/name] who’s about 11 or 12 and he wears the name very nicely. [name]Don[/name]'t worry about what other people think. It’s your son, so you should love his name.
If you look at the statistics, Roscoe’s been out for a while, and Ross is just dying now. With the O-name trend beginning, Roscoe’s likely to see a small revival in the near future. It’s too soon for Ross.
When I said “too soon”, I meant “too soon to expect to see it rise again”, not “I’d rather not see it again.” I’m often out of step with trends, and I like both [name]Ross[/name] and [name]Roscoe[/name]. I prefer [name]Ross[/name] on its own, but if I were to use it myself, sound issues with the last name would force [name]Roscoe[/name].
I think [name]Roscoe[/name] fits better in your sibset, but I don’t understand the dislike of [name]Ross[/name] either. I blame Friends. All the Rosses I’ve known have been really very ideal specimens of mankind. Smart, good-looking, moral, successful, ambitious, the whole package. I have no idea why they named that wishy washy half a man on Friends such a masculine name.
So either one is z good name to me, but I would keep in mind what the pp mentioned about previous and current popularity. [name]Ross[/name] is kinda headed out of fashion while [name]Roscoe[/name] is an up and comer.
[name]Ross[/name] is a fine name. I’m with woodensandals on this one, “All the Rosses I’ve known have been really very ideal specimens of mankind. Smart, good-looking, moral, successful, ambitious, the whole package.”
I’d let those other moms’ comments roll right off.
I really like [name]Ross[/name]. I cant understand the negative reactions. However I must be honest and say that I dont care for [name]Roscoe[/name]. If your friends dislike [name]Ross[/name], there may be fainting and moaning with [name]Roscoe[/name].
I like [name]Ross[/name] as a nickname for [name]Roscoe[/name]. It’s a lovely name. I know someone who just named her child Rosston after dad [name]John[/name] [name]Ross[/name]. The last name ends in the -awst sound, so very rhyme-y. Now, that is an unfortunate name. [name]Add[/name] the fact that the family is in [name]Alabama[/name], so the name comes out Rawwsten. It’s what they wanted, but…
Also, my DF is a [name]Chandler[/name], and the only time the Friends association bothers him is when people call him “bean.” Luckily, [name]Ross[/name]'s last name wasn’t so offensive.
Naming your child [name]Roscoe[/name] and nicknaming him [name]Ross[/name] is lovely. It has significance, you love it, it goes well with your sibsets. That, in my opinion, is what makes a name “yours.”
Forget for friends! [name]Aiden[/name] & [name]Ethan[/name] worked for them, but you’re going beyond that! Good for you.
It seems really dated to me. All the [name]Ross[/name]'s I’ve known have been a lot older. It has a bit of a whimpy vibe to me, but then again I didn’t really like that character on Friends. [name]Roscoe[/name]…seems like another era too. I remember that when I was in middle school we had to come up with our own mythological stories, and I made mine about how [name]Aphrodite[/name] fell in love with a man named [name]Roscoe[/name] (and his tragic death that created the [name]Rose[/name]). Random tidbit, but I think it shows that somehow it’s always felt like a hero name from another era to me. shrug I mean if you love it there’s nothing actually bad about it…but do be aware that people do tend to get certain vibes off of names, and those are all people around you so it’s possible that that may be a more widespread feeling where you live.
Thank you for your post!! And in your DF’s defense, you can let him know that [name]Chandler[/name]'s last name on Friends was [name]Bing[/name], not Bean, so the mockers are the ones who don’t have their own hat on straight
I am so grateful for your insight and cannot wait to show my husband all these great points!
