What is your strangest, most crazy name crush?

[name_m]Hi[/name_m]!

When we were expecting for the second time and we knew our baby will be a boy, we were absolutely crazy about the name [name_m]Sherlock[/name_m]. At the beginning it was a joke (‘When we can’t agree about the name, we promise, he’ll be named [name_m]Sherlock[/name_m]!’), but then we loved it. Finally, we chose more ‘normal’ name, but [name_m]Sherlock[/name_m] is still our guilty pleasure:).
[name_f]Do[/name_f] you have some names you will probably never use, but just love?

I was going to say [name_m]Sherlock[/name_m]! :stuck_out_tongue: I want to use it as a middle, so I’m hoping for a SO who likes really out there names. I’m way too influenced by characters in general. Some more out there ones:

Belladonna
Arachne
Eclipse

Hemlock
[name_m]Icarus[/name_m]
[name_u]Cobalt[/name_u]
[name_m]Bravery[/name_m]
[name_m]Valiant[/name_m]
Mycroft (I’m joking, way too close to Microsoft)

I too love [name_m]Sherlock[/name_m]. I am thinking about using it as a mn for my first son: [name_m]Roland[/name_m] [name_m]Sherlock[/name_m], though I also love [name_m]Roland[/name_m] [name_u]Frost[/name_u] and some other combos. That way it would encompass my two literary heroes: [name_m]Roland[/name_m] Deschain, all round badass, and [name_m]Sherlock[/name_m] [name_m]Holmes[/name_m], all round genius. Plus, they are both great names.

I love [name_m]Seraphim[/name_m], but I am a weird one- I can actually see this on a child of mine, especially in the middle. I am worried it might be a bit much though.

Aslan- I love it, but the apparent [name_m]Christ[/name_m] metaphors most people have with the lion might be a bit much. I would still love to use it though. Maybe in the middle.

[name_f]Snow[/name_f]- For a boy. I don’t know… I get that it is too [name_f]Snow[/name_f] White, but I really really like it for a boy. No, I am not a GOT fan- never watched it, and only made it halfway through the first book, so it isn’t because of [name_m]John[/name_m] [name_f]Snow[/name_f].

[name_m]Absalom[/name_m]- Great name, but considering most people associate it with that hookah smoking caterpillar in [name_f]Alice[/name_f] in Wonderland (the [name_m]Tim[/name_m] [name_m]Burton[/name_m] movie), it might not be the best bet.

Badger- For a girl. I really loved it, and was focussed on using it for a really long time (As in, since I was about 6. it was one of my great grandmother’s nn, because they were her favourite animal, and she used to make badger shaped cakes. Not because she was annoying. Everyone adored her.). Then someone pointed out the badger=annoying thing, which I knew, but had completely forgotten about. Needless to say, not in the running anymore.

[name_m]Cuthbert[/name_m]- [name_m]Cuthbert[/name_m] Allgood was a character in the Dark [name_m]Tower[/name_m] series. That is where I first fell in love with the name. But I can’t see a baby [name_m]Cuthbert[/name_m]. Or a middle aged [name_m]Cuthbert[/name_m]. I think it would be a really difficult choice to live with. I am not even really sure why it appeals to me.

[name_f]Hedwig[/name_f]- No, I would never actually use it. The [name_m]Harry[/name_m] [name_m]Potter[/name_m] owl combined with the sounds of head and wig don’t lend themselves to a very child friendly name. I would love to meet a [name_f]Hedwig[/name_f] though- I just don’t think I could be brave enough. I guess there is the nn [name_m]Eddie[/name_m].

[name_m]Egbert[/name_m]- Ditto. I would never use this for a child- the egg teasing is too obvious. It would be a great name for a cat or chicken or rooster though… Hm.

[name_f]Swanhild[/name_f]- I don’t know why. I just see Swan [name_u]Lake[/name_u] and pretty, flouncy tutu’s. I don’t think I could do it though.

High five, @myosotis:)!

My dad is actually trying to convince me that Sherlock is a great name for a child of either gender. That and Benedict (‘But Nooshi, baby Ben would be so cute.’ Me: ‘Yes, it would dad. If baby Ben was a boy, and it wasn’t solely because you have a man crush on Benedict Cumberbatch.’ Dad: ‘What about Sherlock then? It really is a girls name.’ Me: ‘Urgh.’).

Belladonna- Pretty cool, until you consider that Belladonna / deadly nightshade is a type of poison.

[name_f]My[/name_f] dad is actually trying to convince me that naming my first boy (or girl) [name_m]Sherlock[/name_m] is a great idea. That or [name_m]Benedict[/name_m].

High five, @nooshi:)! I thought all of will find it crazy, but look, there are already three of us!

[name_m]Add[/name_m] me to the list of people who love [name_m]Sherlock[/name_m]!
Although I’d never use it, it remains a huge guilty pleasure. I blame [name_m]Benedict[/name_m] Cumberbatch for making me love [name_m]Sherlock[/name_m] and [name_m]Benedict[/name_m] as names.
Most of my other favourite boys names are pretty normal apart from [name_m]Magnus[/name_m] (I’ve heard it’s popular in some Scandinavian countries though) and I’m starting to like [name_m]Septimus[/name_m].
For girls probably [name_u]Calypso[/name_u], [name_f]Isolde[/name_f], Eirys, [name_f]Amoret[/name_f] and [name_f]Aliena[/name_f] ([name_m]Al[/name_m]-ee-AY-na).

I love [name_m]Sherlock[/name_m] and I would totally use it!! [name_f]My[/name_f] partner loves it too

Other “crazy” names I love:

Tolkien names: Fredegar, Erebor, Meriadoc, Mithrandir, Peregrin, Samwise, Rudigar
[name_m]Elwood[/name_m]
[name_m]Holmes[/name_m]
[name_m]Odysseus[/name_m]
[name_m]Phoebus[/name_m]
Stobbart
[name_m]Wellington[/name_m]
[name_m]Wolf[/name_m] / Wolfram

Adrasteia
Caliadne
Erisbe
Faerie
Ferelith
Imoen
[name_f]Maeby[/name_f]
Merewen
[name_f]Merrily[/name_f]
Sansa
[name_f]Snow[/name_f]
Zenith

Boys: [name_m]Bamboo[/name_m] & Maui
[name_u]Love[/name_u] nature names and I think bamboo is beautiful. I wish I could use it but I think it’s only appropriate in the middle spot. [name_f]My[/name_f] hesitation with Maui is that I have zero connection to Polynesian culture (Maui is a hero in their mythology). Although, lots of people with no connection to Greece use names from Greek myth, I don’t think Polynesian myth is mainstream enough for me to use.

Girls: [name_m]Seraphim[/name_m] & [name_m]Basil[/name_m]
It’s so beautiful and would make a gorgeous fn with the nn [name_f]Sera[/name_f], BUT angels are men. I try to ignore it but that bugs me so much that I couldn’t ever use it for a girl. I only like [name_m]Seraphim[/name_m] as a boy’s mn. [name_m]Basil[/name_m] is not an attractive sound (bay-zil) but for some reason I still love it. I don’t even like it as a fn but it feels perfect as a mn

I love [name_m]Sherlock[/name_m] and Mycroft! If I ever adopt brother dogs I’ll name them that

I like [name_m]Severin[/name_m] for a boy, and [name_m]Peregrine[/name_m], also [name_u]Auberon[/name_u].

For girls I love [name_f]Bridie[/name_f], [name_f]Fanchon[/name_f], [name_f]Monet[/name_f], and [name_f]Angelou[/name_f].

[name_m]Ignatius[/name_m] is the only one I can think of for a boy.

[name_f]Bellatrix[/name_f], [name_f]Isolde[/name_f], [name_f]Thisbe[/name_f], [name_f]Evadne[/name_f] and [name_f]Avalon[/name_f] for girls.

I love wolf but it is unwearable in my nationality. I think [name_u]Vesper[/name_u] is nice but it just reminds me of the evil family name in the book my cousin is reading the 39 clues. I also like elle but people say it sounds too much like the letter. :frowning:

Scholastica - We had this old family bible with a list of saints and their feast names in the back, and before I got my first baby name book, I used to love going through the list for interesting names. Scholastica was one of them, and I just thought it was one of the coolest names ever. Unfortunately, when I suggested to my hubby many years later as a possible middle for a girl, he looked at me as if I had grown a second head!

[name_f]Artemisia[/name_f] - I think she’s so pretty, but it’s another one that earns a weird look from DH. Besides, it might be a strange name for a Catholic girl…

[name_f]Tanith[/name_f] - I fell in love with it thanks to ice dancer [name_f]Tanith[/name_f] Belbin, but I just can’t imagine telling a daughter that she was named after an athlete! That just seems like a silly reason to me. (No offense to those who have, though.) Too bad, because DH actually doesn’t think it’s that strange – being familiar with the skater and seeing how well it works on her – so I could possibly talk him into it if I really wanted…

Desdemona - With [name_f]Ophelia[/name_f] our middle name choice for Catherine, the tragic associations don’t really bother me. It’s the fact that it has the word “demon” embedded right in the name!

Verdandi - Neither one of us has Scandinavian heritage, and it’s another that probably doesn’t work for a Catholic girl, so it remains a guilty pleasure.

[name_m]Dmitri[/name_m] - Very Russian! I do have Eastern European heritage (Polish), but it still seems a bit much.

[name_m]Vladimir[/name_m] - Ditto.

[name_f]Celestine[/name_f] - Technically unisex, with several popes named [name_f]Celestine[/name_f], but most people would probably think it’s a girl’s name at first glance. NB doesn’t even recognize it as unisex.

[name_m]Seraphim[/name_m] - Add me to the list who like Seraphim for a boy! But I love Seraphina so much more, so I would never seriously consider using it. Hubby doesn’t like it anyway.

I have five billion!

One would be boys named Chesterfield and [name_m]Davenport[/name_m].

Girls named [name_f]Taffeta[/name_f] and [name_f]Cricket[/name_f].

And definitely Harvest.

I’ve been a British history buff since I could read (all of those kings, queens and intrigue - lovely) so I’ve always been fascinated with the dynastic name of Plantagenet. I like reading about eccentric British families like the Sitwells so I have a soft spot for [name_m]Sacheverell[/name_m] too. For girls, Clarimond and Florizel come to mind.

@mischa–I also love [name_m]Sacheverell[/name_m]! :smiley:

On my many recent cemetery walks, I have grown to love;

Florala
[name_f]Georganna[/name_f]
[name_f]Keturah[/name_f]
[name_f]Mercy[/name_f]
[name_f]Charity[/name_f]

[name_u]Bertie[/name_u]
[name_u]Merritt[/name_u]
[name_u]Georgie[/name_u]
[name_u]Emery[/name_u]
[name_u]Percy[/name_u]

[name_f]My[/name_f] weirdest girl name crush is [name_f]Thisbe[/name_f]. It was the name of a baby in a book I read once, and I thought it was so adorable. As for boys, I really really adore [name_u]Ira[/name_u]. I feel like I’m the lone ranger on liking this name but with my love of [name_u]Asa[/name_u], and [name_m]Ezra[/name_m], [name_u]Ira[/name_u] is the only vowel boy name that ends in A that makes sense

[name_m]Sherlock[/name_m] for me, as well. [name_f]Zelda[/name_f], too, strangely enough. I don’t consider [name_f]Zelda[/name_f] very crazy, but apparently I’m the only person I know who doesn’t.

[name_f]Arrietty[/name_f] would be another head-turner on my list. [name_f]Nigella[/name_f] gets strange looks, as does [name_f]Zuzu[/name_f].

Then there’s [name_u]Florian[/name_u], [name_m]Merlin[/name_m], [name_m]Odin[/name_m], [name_m]Oswin[/name_m], [name_m]Peregrine[/name_m], and [name_m]Wolfgang[/name_m]. That’s about it for “crazy” names on my list. I would use each of these if my husband would let me get away with it (might actually use [name_m]Wolfgang[/name_m], since it’s his pick).
