Madison already feels a bit dated to me, as do [name_u]Aiden[/name_u] and [name_f]Nevaeh[/name_f], but I think these will be “dated” in 10 years (not that datedness is bad!);
Avery
[name_f]Luna[/name_f]
[name_f]Aria[/name_f]
[name_u]Harper[/name_u]
[name_f]Penelope[/name_f]
Greyson
[name_u]Carter[/name_u]
[name_u]Lincoln[/name_u]
[name_u]Oliver[/name_u]
[name_u]Maverick[/name_u]
I’m with you on all but [name_u]Aiden[/name_u], although I think [name_u]Jayden[/name_u], [name_m]Kaiden[/name_m] etc will be. I think any name that was only trendy in the past 10-20 years will be, like [name_u]Grayson[/name_u] and [name_u]Addison[/name_u] (which is a shame because I love them!)
It’s usually the names that were SUPER popular at that time, so [name_f]Ava[/name_f] and [name_u]Evelyn[/name_u] are two that definitely feel like they could become dated.
HowEVER, I found the popular names from 2009 and some of them are still popular:
this is the moment when I realize that this furious research and typing has absolutely no value and is utterly speculation, but I’m just going to post it anyway because that way I will feel slightly less pointless.
Girls
Any elle name
[name_f]Ella[/name_f]
[name_f]Eleanor[/name_f]
[name_f]Eloise[/name_f]
And maybe
[name_f]Isla[/name_f]
[name_f]Lola[/name_f]
[name_f]Lila[/name_f]
Boys
The trendy names like
[name_u]Austin[/name_u]
[name_u]Logan[/name_u]
[name_m]Brody[/name_m]
[name_u]Hudson[/name_u]
[name_u]Mason[/name_u]
Names I really dislike for boys anyway.
I do not care for [name_f]Olivia[/name_f] either.
For girls:
[name_f]Abigail[/name_f]
[name_f]Sophia[/name_f]
[name_f]Emily[/name_f]
[name_u]Alexis[/name_u]
[name_u]Madison[/name_u]
[name_u]Ashley[/name_u]
[name_f]Sarah[/name_f]
And for boys:
[name_u]Evan[/name_u]
[name_m]Leo[/name_m]
[name_u]James[/name_u]
[name_u]Mason[/name_u]
[name_m]Olivier[/name_m]
[name_u]Liam[/name_u]
I agree with all the one’s you included.
Olivia
[name_f]Amelia[/name_f]
[name_f]Jenna[/name_f](this is already dated to me)
[name_f]Mia[/name_f]
[name_f]Mila[/name_f]
[name_f]Giana[/name_f]
Matthew
[name_m]Caden[/name_m]
[name_m]Alexander[/name_m]
100% [name_u]Everly[/name_u], this name is sooo popular in my area and I feel like it’s the [name_u]Ashley[/name_u] of this generation.
Ella, [name_f]Zoe[/name_f] or [name_f]Zoey[/name_f] and [name_f]Phoebe[/name_f].
Ada, [name_f]Nora[/name_f], [name_f]Mabel[/name_f] and [name_f]Hazel[/name_f]
I think like what’s happened in past decades, many of the surname name choices for girls, or masculine crossover options for girls will end up feeling dated.
[name_u]Madison[/name_u] is already beginning to feel that way despite still being fairly popular, [name_u]Riley[/name_u] and it’s various spelling variations I think will largely drop off by then since people already seem to be getting bored of it. I also think we’ll start to see [name_u]Harper[/name_u] drop dramatically in a few more years. [name_u]Skylar[/name_u] has slowly begun to drop and that speed will likely accelerate. [name_u]Brooklyn[/name_u] is definitely beginning to slip and I think in a decade will be in the lower half of the charts.
[name_u]Kennedy[/name_u], [name_f]Kaylee[/name_f], and [name_f]Kylie[/name_f], along with several other trendy K names, will likely fall out of fashion too.
Most of these names hit their peak in the charts in 10 years or less and are already beginning to drop again.
Keeping this in mind, I would also keep an eye on [name_f]Isla[/name_f] in the US. It has climbed really quickly, unless the trajectory slows down and it finds itself in a more steady postition in the upper charts for a number of years, it could become dated. It’s too early to tell though.
Ooh I already feel [name_u]Ashley[/name_u] and [name_f]Sarah[/name_f] are dated - I knew quite a few growing up
Everleigh
[name_f]Isabella[/name_f]
[name_f]Ava[/name_f]
[name_u]Jayden[/name_u], [name_m]Cayden[/name_m], [name_u]Brayden[/name_u], [name_u]Hayden[/name_u], etc times infinity
[name_u]Jayden[/name_u] and [name_f]Isla[/name_f]
I’m also thinking Olivia will be dated too it’s just very predictable nowadays. For boys I think Aidan and the Aidan esque names will be dated like Kaden, Jaden or Braden
Olivia, [name_f]Ella[/name_f], [name_f]Ava[/name_f], [name_u]Everly[/name_u], [name_f]Hallie[/name_f]
I don’t think [name_f]Olivia[/name_f] or [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f] will ever be dated, they are timeless. [name_f]Emily[/name_f] has also been popular for quite a while. I think they may become less popular in time, but they wont go “out of style”. Names that go out of style are associated with a certain time frame, like the 80’s or 90’s. While [name_f]Olivia[/name_f] has been popular for 30 years now, and [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f] for 100 years! The names that will be considered “dated” are trendy names like [name_f]Luna[/name_f], “[name_f]Maddie[/name_f]” names, and E names like [name_f]Elsie[/name_f] and [name_f]Ellie[/name_f], because they will be associated in the short time frame they are used.
But the most important thing is choosing a name you like. Being “dated” doesn’t make a name any less beautiful.
@Mommabeebee this is exactly my thought. Classic names will have ebbs and flows to the height of their popularity but won’t feel associated with any one time period and so don’t become dated. Passing trend names, the ones that quickly rise and then drop off again are the ones that become dated.
FOr me when you say dated I feel like it’s the names that are ‘mom’ names (in other words if you heard it you would expect it to be a 20+ yr. old). Not just the ones that have fallen out of style. So it’s would be the names that were most common maybe 20-30 years ago like [name_u]Madison[/name_u], [name_f]Emily[/name_f], [name_f]Hannah[/name_f], [name_u]Ashley[/name_u], [name_u]Alexis[/name_u], [name_f]Jessica[/name_f] etc. I’m sure some of these (like [name_f]Emily[/name_f]) will still be used because they are ‘classics’ but just because it’s classic doesn’t mean it can’t feel dated (for example Iwould consider [name_m]Richard[/name_m] & [name_m]Edward[/name_m] classic, but I would still think it was a 40+ yr old man if I didn’t know any different)
