[name_f]Every[/name_f] day we see at least one tired [name_u]Berry[/name_u] on here complaining about how her man’s tastes vary so differently from her own. Sometimes couples can spend every last second of their nine-month pregnancy fretting and fighting over names. I’d like to take a few minutes to hear the other side, the guys’ side, and see what names they love. What names does your husband/fiancé/boyfriend/partner/baby daddy like? If it was up to him, what would your baby be named? Or what do you think are “guy friendly” names?
my OH is [name_m]French[/name_m] and so he likes lots of names that don’t always work in English ([name_f]Victoire[/name_f], Blandine, [name_m]Romain[/name_m]…) Other than that he has a very classic taste (but very common) he likes names like [name_f]Charlotte[/name_f] and [name_f]Juliette[/name_f]. It’s hard to get him to agree on names, as some names I love just don’t work in [name_m]French[/name_m]. The only ones we have in common at the moment are [name_u]June[/name_u] and [name_f]El[/name_f]éanor for a girl and [name_m]Rupert[/name_m] for a boy.
[name_f]My[/name_f] husband loves names as “out there” as I do - just different ones!
His faves: Ender, [name_m]Odin[/name_m], [name_f]Valencia[/name_f], [name_f]Pandora[/name_f], [name_f]Lux[/name_f]… It is super hard to find ones we can agree on.
[name_f]My[/name_f] husband likes names he’s heard before, but doesn’t [name_u]LOVE[/name_u] any particular names, which is hard for me to understand. He’s very concerned with what people will think, more so than how the child’s name might actually effect them.
He also doesn’t like long names and doesn’t care about “flow” very much. Having three two-syllable names in a row does not bother him at all, for example.
He had some pretty decent names on his list this time though (we each had about 8 names, we are very fussy) and he had the final say overall. I’m not unhappy with his choice
His list, from memory, had these names:
[name_f]Kyra[/name_f]
[name_f]Serena[/name_f]
[name_f]Selena[/name_f]
[name_f]Arista[/name_f]
[name_f]Larissa[/name_f]
He likes names ending in A, obviously
I think my husband has [name_u]Berry[/name_u]-ok taste actually maybe. I actually live in fear that if our lists were put up as a This or That his would get considerably more love than mine.
[name_f]My[/name_f] husband likes:

I’ve noticed my fiance likes names that end in the -ee sound. We have such different tastes. I do know his favorite name is [name_f]Lily[/name_f] which I like too but it’s too popular and our surname ends in -ley. His other favorite name is [name_f]Noelle[/name_f]. Here’s his girl list I made him make lol. He doesn’t have a boy one because he literally only likes a few boy names - [name_u]Chase[/name_u], [name_u]Conner[/name_u], [name_m]Harrison[/name_m], [name_m]Foster[/name_m] and [name_m]Zane[/name_m].
[name_f]Aster[/name_f]
[name_f]Cassie[/name_f]
[name_f]Cambria[/name_f]
[name_f]Chloe[/name_f]
[name_f]Freya[/name_f]
[name_f]Hannah[/name_f]

[name_f]Noelle[/name_f]
[name_f]Pandora[/name_f]
[name_u]Quinn[/name_u]
[name_u]Riley[/name_u]
[name_u]Ryan[/name_u]
[name_u]Sage[/name_u]
[name_f]Snow[/name_f]
[name_f]Talia[/name_f]
[name_u]Taylor[/name_u]
[name_f]Willow[/name_f]
[name_f]Zoey[/name_f]
[name_f]Zora[/name_f]
I’m very lucky because my husband likes the same names I do! We might disagree on the odd name, but our taste is so very similar!
He loves:
[name_f]Charlotte[/name_f]
[name_f]Matilda[/name_f]
[name_f]Florence[/name_f] (I prefer this for a middle, he likes it for a first)
[name_u]Austen[/name_u]
[name_m]Hezekiah[/name_m] (again, I like this for a middle, he likes it for a first)
[name_u]Elliott[/name_u]
We both love our names- makes life a lot easier! There are a few names I love, like [name_f]Adelaide[/name_f] and [name_f]Elsie[/name_f], that he really doesn’t, but I can’t think of any other names we’ve really bumped heads with!
the only name my fiance likes is noah
[name_f]My[/name_f] husband is a fan of normal names spelled horribly. He likes Alycin, [name_f]Cidney[/name_f], and [name_f]Melani[/name_f] to name a few. It drives me nuts.
Husband and I agree on names for the most part. We have the sames tastes, we like classic or “hipster” names for the most part. He’s more relaxed about teasing than I am, but he’s also less sensitive than I am so our remembered experiences of childhood are pretty different. The only place were we differ much is with associations. He had some negative name associations due to people or characters that I don’t and vice versa I’m sure, but since I make the lists mine don’t get discussed really. He’s fine with naming our son [name_u]Sidney[/name_u], but resists [name_m]Casper[/name_m] because of the ghost character.
I think the perception may be off from the reality because you just don’t hear much about couples that agree, it’s the ones that have problems that will post about them on the forums. Part of the reason we got married was because of shared interests, so it makes sense we would agree. Our marriage isn’t very traditional though so we don’t have that he’s picking the manly man names and I’m picking the girly girl names split.
[name_f]My[/name_f] boyfriend and I, should we ever marry and have kids, would be fine picking names together. We like different names, but we do agree on some.
His favorites:
For girls-
[name_f]Juliet[/name_f] (which I [name_u]LOVE[/name_u]!)
[name_f]Kirsten[/name_f]
[name_f]Ellie[/name_f]
[name_f]Hope[/name_f]
[name_f]Jubilee[/name_f]
[name_m]Gideon[/name_m]
[name_m]Jonathan[/name_m]
[name_u]Bailey[/name_u]
[name_u]Avery[/name_u]
[name_u]Sidney[/name_u]
[His name is [name_u]Aubrey[/name_u], so he’s always liked names like [name_u]Avery[/name_u], [name_u]Sidney[/name_u], and [name_u]Bailey[/name_u]]
[name_f]My[/name_f] husband is very future thinking. So for him, he likes to think how our child (as an adult) would feel about their name. We run our own business so he’s assuming maybe one of our kids would eventually take that over (if they choose to, of course). So, he likes easy to pronounce and spell names, and ones that are strong, more classic names. Basically, he wants our kids to be taken seriously when they have to put their names on a resume, haha!
His name is [name_u]Michael[/name_u], his brother’s name is [name_m]Lucas[/name_m]. He likes the boy names: [name_m]David[/name_m], [name_u]Noah[/name_u], [name_m]Peter[/name_m], [name_m]Caleb[/name_m], [name_m]Henry[/name_m], etc. For girls I know he likes: [name_f]Emma[/name_f], [name_f]Kristen[/name_f], [name_f]Natalie[/name_f], [name_f]Lauren[/name_f], [name_f]Lucy[/name_f], [name_f]Charlotte[/name_f], [name_f]Emily[/name_f].
We both have Scandinavian background so I like names that reflect that such as [name_f]Elsa[/name_f] and [name_f]Britta[/name_f]. I think we’ll end up having a combination of “normal” names and Norwegian sounding names
[name_f]My[/name_f] significant other has more “out there” tastes than I do. He is very into word names, and would happily pick outlandish for our future kid. He really likes Wave for a boy, for example, and [name_f]Sonnet[/name_f] and [name_f]Clover[/name_f] for a girl. I don’t dislike those names, but they also seem very specific in a way that I’m not that into. I’d rather go with something more neutral. He likes a few more neutral names for girls, like [name_f]Pearl[/name_f] and [name_u]June[/name_u]. He’s not into long, flowing names at all (a big no to [name_f]Octavia[/name_f], which I love). He also dislikes any feminizations of male names (so no [name_f]Theodora[/name_f] or [name_f]Louisa[/name_f]) and we’d both rather avoid anything biblical or religious-seeming. So two of my favorites, [name_f]Josephine[/name_f] and [name_u]Simone[/name_u], are a double strike out! He also dislikes unisex names and names that could sound boyish-- so no to [name_f]Bronwen[/name_f].
Basically, he likes word names almost exclusively, and my taste is broader.
For girls, we agree on [name_f]Clementine[/name_f], [name_f]Cosima[/name_f] (though a friend just used this, so I think it’s out), and [name_f]Penelope[/name_f] (long, but he thinks it is cute). Boys are another story entirely. The only name we both like is [name_m]Linus[/name_m].
[name_f]My[/name_f] husband is a history and literature geek, and all the names he comes up with are found in Greek tragedies, novels, [name_m]Shakespeare[/name_m] or the names of famous authors. I would say he has an excellent taste, but some of the names he likes I cannot imagine on an real person. Examples:
[name_m]Ajax[/name_m]
[name_f]Andromache[/name_f]
[name_f]Titania[/name_f]
[name_u]Keats[/name_u]
Stoker
[name_m]Byron[/name_m]
[name_m]Bertram[/name_m]
[name_m]Lennox[/name_m]
[name_f]Athena[/name_f]
[name_f]Ophelia[/name_f]
I understand the appeal of those names but I wouldn’t like them on our children. For the most part he agrees with this once he pictures his son/daughter, and not a superhero-fantasy-character running around. He is still hoping for a boy named [name_m]Hector[/name_m] though. I don’t know, we’ll see.
Other than that we also agree that family names are special and fortunately, his family has some fantastic names all over the family tree. His brother and my father have the same first name, which we used for our son’s middle name. That was very easy.
[name_f]My[/name_f] brother once told my that he would name his children [name_m]Jack[/name_m], [name_f]Gracie[/name_f], and [name_u]Tyler[/name_u].
If we have a boy, my husband would just [name_u]LOVE[/name_u] to name him after himself ([name_m]Jamil[/name_m] [name_m]Jr[/name_m].) with [name_m]Danger[/name_m] as his middle name. And he’s not joking. Needless to say, it’s been difficult narrowing down what we can agree on. For girls we have tentatively agreed on [name_u]Ruby[/name_u], [name_f]Amelie[/name_f], Ambelia (it’s a greek thing), or [name_u]November[/name_u] (nn [name_u]Ember[/name_u]). For boys we have [name_u]River[/name_u] and [name_m]Sagan[/name_m] (nn [name_u]Sage[/name_u]), and that’s as far as we’ve gotten!
[name_f]My[/name_f] primary partner is a guy. He loves the name [name_f]Apollonia[/name_f] (like the character from The Godfather). He’s also a fan of [name_f]Faye[/name_f], which is his favorite relative’s middle name. [name_f]Faye[/name_f] is a personal favorite in honor of my mentor, so fortunately there’s some overlap. I also quite like [name_f]Apollonia[/name_f], particularly with the nns [name_f]Polly[/name_f] or [name_f]Annie[/name_f].
[name_f]My[/name_f] husband has the most boring taste in names. I love him, but his choices are so dull. Everything slightly different is “weird”, and he has vetoed all names strongly linked to the [name_m]Royal[/name_m] Family (yes, really), so no [name_f]Victoria[/name_f], [name_m]Charles[/name_m], [name_m]William[/name_m], or [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f].
On top of that, he’s never around kids and spends his work days interacting with predominantly older people with heart problems, so he has no idea what the norm is. Some of his suggestions:
[name_f]Shirley[/name_f]
[name_f]Helen[/name_f]
[name_m]Victor[/name_m]
He does like Biblical names, but only really standard ones, like [name_m]Nathan[/name_m] and [name_f]Rebecca[/name_f], although he did say that he likes [name_m]Silas[/name_m]. The only names we agree on are [name_m]Paul[/name_m] and [name_f]Miriam[/name_f].
We are on the same page about on lots of things, but not names. If I ever do get pregnant, there will be some interesting name discussions, I’m sure!
[name_f]My[/name_f] partner likes names that are different so luckily for me he is quite open to anything!
His boy list would consist of…
[name_m]Isaac[/name_m] (our number one name for a boy)
[name_m]Santiago[/name_m]
[name_m]Ezekiel[/name_m]
[name_m]Barnaby[/name_m]
[name_m]Rupert[/name_m]
[name_u]Noah[/name_u]
His girl list would consist of…
[name_u]Winter[/name_u]
[name_f]Arabella[/name_f]
[name_f]Harriet[/name_f]
[name_f]Felicity[/name_f]
[name_f]Beatrix[/name_f]
[name_f]Aurora[/name_f]
[name_f]Scarlet[/name_f]
I would say my boyfriend and I have pretty similar tastes in names. I’m always the one who brings up the topic though haha.
I know for boys we both absolutely love [name_u]Morgan[/name_u]. He also likes [name_m]Lucian[/name_m], [name_m]Lucas[/name_m], [name_u]Rory[/name_u], [name_m]Zander[/name_m], and [name_m]Ezra[/name_m]. [name_m]Ezra[/name_m] is actually a name he saw one day and liked so much that he was the one to bring up the subjects of names first! He likes a lot of mythological names like [name_m]Odin[/name_m] and [name_u]Loki[/name_u] but we wouldn’t use those on kids, only on pets.
For girls I think [name_f]Mila[/name_f] is his favorite. We don’t discuss girls names that often for some reason.
