What Names Have You Given to Pets?

I’ve met people on both sides of the pet-naming camp. There are those who give their animals more traditional pet names like [name]Ace[/name], Snickers, Hershey, etc, and they firmly decry using “people” names for pets. And then there are others (myself included) who find it hilarious to use human names for animals! In my mind, naming pets is a boatload of fun because (1) you have the freedom to use awesome names that you wouldn’t otherwise dare to give a real child, and (2) it’s fun to choose names that might pertain to a physical or personality trait of your pet.

With all that being said…here are some of the names I’ve bestowed upon critters over the years.

[name]Gladys[/name] (a turtle, so named “because I was glad I found her”…I was 4)

[name]Elizabeth[/name] (this was given to numerous “walking stick” bugs)

[name]Moby[/name], Mohawk, Silverapple, Tchaikovsky, Almanzo (assorted fish)

[name]Beatrix[/name] [name]Potter[/name] Cappuccino (bunny)

[name]Henry[/name] [name]Lewis[/name] (dwarf hamster #1)

[name]Sophie[/name] [name]Rose[/name] (bunny)

[name]Tiny[/name] [name]Tim[/name] Houdini (dwarf hamster #2)

[name]Calvin[/name] (a lizard— I specifically chose this because [name]Calvin[/name] means “bald”)

[name]Esau[/name] (tarantula-- because he was hairy like [name]Esau[/name] in the Bible!)

[name]Robert[/name] [name]Augustine[/name] (black [name]German[/name] [name]Shepherd[/name] mix)

[name]Moses[/name] (tadpole who was the sole survivor when all my other tadpoles spontaneously died…he, like the biblical [name]Moses[/name],was saved from a watery grave)

[name]Zaccheus[/name] [name]Benedict[/name]-[name]Collins[/name] (dwarf hamster #3…[name]Zaccheus[/name] because he was so small, and we called him Mr. [name]Collins[/name] from the start because he was so timid and mousy like the character of that name in Pride and Prejudice  )

[name]Emma[/name] [name]Josephine[/name] [name]Austen[/name] (pure-black bunny rabbit; I love the name [name]Emma[/name] but it’s far too common for me to ever want to use it on a child…but it fit her perfectly)

What fun names have you given your pets? Would you (or have you) use a frilly “human” name?

Pie, Boggle & [name]Theodore[/name] - Goldfish

[name]Gilda[/name], [name]Sigrid[/name], [name]Djuna[/name], Henessy, Goldstack & Meika - Chooks

I think [name]Esau[/name] the Tarantula is pretty darn cute.

Former pets:

[name]Shadow[/name] – solid black cat. I was little when she was born. She’s still alive but she’s 13 years old and is starting to turn red and loose her teeth.

[name]Pepper[/name] – black and bluish white dog
T-bone – again, was little. He was an orange and white dog
Fluppy, [name]Coco[/name], Fatty, Boots, Rascal, [name]George[/name], Marmalade – Various cats. My sister named Fluppy when she was 2 I think. She had her front 4 teeth broken out and couldn’t make the F sound for Fluffy. [name]George[/name] is orange and mom thought he looked like a Weasley (from [name]Harry[/name] [name]Potter[/name]) then he died and Marmalade was born (he’s also orange). The others are calicos and white ones.

Ashes and Spaz – bunnies. Ashes was a grey queen. Spaz was a huge white buck with pink eyes. He’s named Spaz because when he was young, he’d try to get out of his cage by flipping on his back and kicking his feet at the door and rolling around (spazzing you know)

Chief – black and white mouse. His full name was Chief Blackbutt. He had a black spot covering his butt and when we were in the pet store, I giggled and pointed at him and said “He’s chief blackbutt” then we had to get him. He died recently.

[name]Sugar[/name] – black gerbil

Fizgig – calico teddy bear hamster. She looked like Fizgig from “The Dark [name]Crystal[/name]” (one of my favorite [name]Jim[/name] Henson movie) Here’s a pic, in case someone doesn’t know Fizgig.

Current Pets:

Firefly – black and white teddy bear hamster. She is named that because she was panicking in the pet box and then the song Fireflies by Owl City came on and she calmed down.

[name]Loki[/name] – female calico cat. I know [name]Loki[/name] is a male norse god but it fits her really well. She’s always getting into things and causing “chaos” and when we were bringing her home, she was 2 weeks old and she dived off the backseat into the floorboard.

[name]Pan[/name] – male solid black cat (one of [name]Shadow[/name]'s many sons actually) He’s very wild and free and loves to scare the other 2 cats.

[name]Zen[/name] – black and white male cat. He was named [name]Zen[/name] because while [name]Pan[/name] was “panicing” [name]Zen[/name] was sleeping in a bunch of odd positions. He’s very zen.

I had two French poodles named [name]Pepe[/name] and [name]Pierre[/name]. I didn’t name them, though. I did however, name my beagle, Frisky (I was seven, lol.).

I’m not really a pet person, and neither is my dad, so we’ve never really had that many animals in our house, haha, but we have had two dogs over the years–[name]Sasha[/name] (which I think my parents named) and Lady (whose name we insisted on–she was so not a lady, but we couldn’t imagine there being a more perfect dog name than Lady! I think we got it from Lady and the Tramp, haha.).

Most of my pets had “pet names” like a hamster named sugar, birds named [name]Chico[/name], [name]Sunny[/name] and [name]Sky[/name], fish named [name]Rainbow[/name] and Curious. But I did have a gecko named [name]Benji[/name] and I have a cat named [name]Asher[/name] now.

My sisters cats are [name]Kiara[/name] and [name]Koda[/name] (Disney fan obviously, haha. I consider these sorta people names).

My fiance’s family dog is [name]Dolly[/name]. I don’t like the name on a human but it has been used.

Our friends have a cat named [name]Lexi[/name].

Most pets I know have “animal names”. But I like to be a little more creative with naming pets. I remember trying to think of cool names for a litter my fiance’s parent’s cat had once. I finally ended up going with [name]Oliver[/name] (an orange cat), [name]April[/name] (because they were born in [name]April[/name]), [name]Mo[/name] (because he looked like a cat my friend had to give up) and my favorite, [name]Gemini[/name] (her face looked like it was split into two faces, like twins or something. That was my creative name  ). I named my kitty [name]Asher[/name] because it means happy and he was just the happiest little kitten

[name]Carlotta[/name], the family cat

[name]Bailey[/name] [name]Anne[/name], my german shepherd

[name]Jasper[/name] [name]Man[/name], my pit mix

[name]George[/name], our 15 year old box turtle

[name]Oliver[/name] [name]Sue[/name], our current cat (named after the [name]Johnny[/name] [name]Cash[/name] song, “Boy Named [name]Sue[/name]”)

As you can see, I name my pets very “human” names!

I have named A LOT of animals, since I used to foster litters of kittens for an animal shelter. So I will stick with listing human names that I have bestowed on animals, though there have been several that I have given “pet names”

Our personal pets (cats): [name]Oliver[/name] and [name]Penelope[/name] (and [name]Sedona[/name], though that’s not so much condsidered a human name). I also had rabbits when I was younger named [name]Alice[/name] and [name]Madison[/name].

[name]Foster[/name] kittens: [name]Sophie[/name], [name]Pete[/name], [name]Molly[/name], [name]Prescott[/name], [name]Page[/name], [name]Arthur[/name], [name]Guinevere[/name], [name]Olive[/name], [name]Laurel[/name], [name]Willow[/name], [name]Fiona[/name], [name]Ryder[/name].

I only ever had one rabbit, named [name]Peter[/name] (after the [name]Beatrix[/name] [name]Potter[/name] character, [name]Peter[/name] Rabbit. I was four.) We’ve petsat various hamsters though - Binky, [name]Chester[/name], [name]Alex[/name] (I and II) and Nibbles are the ones that come to mind.

My childhood cat was Licorice, nn Licky, and her sister was [name]Thomasina[/name]. They were both b/w cats; my younger sister had a b/w tom named Mitten.

My two favourite turtles were [name]Moshe[/name], a snapping turtle that I had for ten years before I released him into a friend’s pond, and a spotted turtle named [name]Eleazar[/name]. Recently I had a painted turtle named [name]Jesus[/name] (he came back from the dead) but he only did that once; he got tangled in duckweed and died a second and more permanent time. I don’t usually name my pond turtles.

My cats that I had living in [name]Brooklyn[/name] and [name]Canada[/name] were [name]Caspian[/name] (aka Fuzzy) and [name]Tamsin[/name] (aka Beaky); then I had a Bengal named [name]Milo[/name] whom I adored (now you know why I use milo). My daughter’s cat was Nicholasa and the kitten that [name]Milo[/name] and [name]Nicki[/name] had my son named [name]Bill[/name] [name]George[/name] (lol).

Currently we have one Border [name]Collie[/name] – [name]Annabel[/name] [name]May[/name] ([name]May[/name])-- and four cats: [name]Tybalt[/name] ([name]Tibby[/name]), Shofar (he was born on [name]Rosh[/name] Hashanah), [name]Simon[/name] (Simey), and [name]Duncan[/name] (my new Bengal). We have a bearded dragon named [name]Merlin[/name]. I lost a cat last year named [name]Pip[/name].

We have a terrier/shih-zhu mix name Socks… my husband and I named her a couple years back, she loves socks!

I find it fun naming pets too! My pets over the years have been:
[name]Skipper[/name]- he was a parakeet and I was four
[name]Olly[/name]- a guinea pig I had when I was eight
[name]Honey[/name]- boxer puppy my parents named
Chewbacca- he went by chewy, he was a [name]German[/name] boxer
[name]Kodiak[/name]- named after a place in Alaska. He went by koda; he was a white boxer
Chopper- a chow chow puppy we had when I was five. He bit a lot so we had to give him away.
[name]Moses[/name]- a red nose pit that my mother saved from parvo.
[name]Fiona[/name]- A [name]Boston[/name] terrier we got last year
[name]Bama[/name] [name]Belle[/name]- a boxer puppy we had a few years ago
[name]Layla[/name] & [name]Lyla[/name]- our boxers that are sisters

[name]Rainbow[/name] - my very first fish had rainbow rocks on the bottom of his tank
[name]Rena[/name] - fish that died very soon after buying
[name]Goldie[/name] - was a goldfish, if you couldn’t guess
[name]Lily[/name] - first hamster we guessed was born in [name]May[/name], so I named her after her birth flower. The ones in [name]August[/name] (the month we got her) were ugly.
[name]Theodore[/name] - we argued about this name on the way home and I think that gave the little guy a heart attack as he died soon after
Peanut - formally Peanut Butter. I wanted to name him [name]Peter[/name], and my sister wanted [name]Buddy[/name]. Put [name]Peter[/name] [name]Buddy[/name] together and what does it sound like? Peanut Butter.

Our family tradition is to name pets after Disney/Pixar characters.

To that end, we’ve had a dog named Stitch and a cat named Boo.

Ha, I have done some of both…
