What names that are popular on nameberry do you find overrated?

Based on the other comments and my own opinions it seems that really elegant-sounding and “quirky” names are being a bit overdone.

I’m laughing!!

[name_u]Orion[/name_u]. I get the appeal, but all I see is Onion.

Me too! When I see this name I read it “anti” and “gone” which is a big turnoff.

Also [name_u]Greer[/name_u]. Like who would name their kid after a cheese? Also it sounds like grime and rear.

Same, but I see more of greed and rear!

Not to be rude about fans of the name [name_u]Greer[/name_u], but I totally agree with you. It’s like the parents wanted to call their kid [name_f]Gretchen[/name_f] but couldn’t be bothered to spell it properly when signing the birth certificate.

James on a girl
And not necessarily the names Albert, Arthur or Alfred but cringe at Bertie, Artie and Alfie.

probably an unpopular opinion, but I really don’t like the trendy celestial names that are popular at the minute - like [name_u]Nova[/name_u], [name_f]Luna[/name_f], [name_f]Moon[/name_f] etc. I just feel like they won’t age well.

also, I love vintage names, but I think some are a bit too clunky to be revived - like [name_f]Edwina[/name_f], [name_f]Wilhelmina[/name_f], [name_f]Agatha[/name_f], [name_f]Cornelia[/name_f], [name_m]Albert[/name_m], [name_m]Augustus[/name_m], [name_u]Clarence[/name_u], [name_m]Herbert[/name_m] etc.

The [name_f]Cora[/name_f], [name_f]Zora[/name_f], [name_f]Nora[/name_f], [name_f]Elora[/name_f], [name_f]Sephora[/name_f] family of names. I don’t really see the appeal and I know soo many Cora’s.

Wow surprised by some of these!! So many votes here for August and Felix! I’m surprised by the aversion to Eleanor, hah. When I was growing up that was quite an uncommon name, so I guess it almost HAS to be a bit overrated now that it’s become so common? Can any name stand up to high levels of usage and repetition?

I am surprised that Maeve is number 1 here but I still think it’s great!! Sort of as if “Jane” were number 1

Names I never loved but see a lot here/seem overrated, including repeats I’m agreeing with:

Elvie
Harper
Juniper
Wolf
Wilder (just seems a bit too cheesy to me)
Caspian (sounds pretentious)
Silas

Names I might have liked a lot, but have seen/heard a few too many times here and elsewhere ( :sob:):

Oscar
Theo
Arthur
Hugo

A lot of the names that strike me as ‘dated’ or ‘grandparent-ish’ seem to be quite popular with the teenberries. It’s a totally logical evolution! But I still don’t like the names :stuck_out_tongue_closed_eyes:

[name_f]Willa[/name_f], [name_f]Frances[/name_f], [name_u]Evelyn[/name_u], [name_m]Oscar[/name_m], [name_f]Olga[/name_f], [name_f]Beulah[/name_f], [name_u]Amos[/name_u]

And then there are the ‘spunky’ names that tend to feel like they’re trying a little too hard, to me.

[name_u]Maverick[/name_u], [name_m]Knox[/name_m], [name_u]Maddox[/name_u], [name_u]Axel[/name_u], [name_u]Dash[/name_u]

Anyway, I guess what I’m saying is get off my lawn!! :older_woman:

I don’t get the appeal of [name_f]Antigone[/name_f] either.

Also some of the popular names on NB like [name_u]Declan[/name_u], [name_u]Kieran[/name_u] and [name_m]Graham[/name_m] are dated from my cultural perspective so I find it a bit :face_with_raised_eyebrow: to see them recommended here. I get that not everyone grew up knowing a bunch of 1970s-born Declans or Grahams. But it’s still funny to me.

I don’t think [name_f]Antigone[/name_f] is popular on nameberry. For the little I’m here I’ve only seen people saying that they dislike it.

@Cathy_Wood it was more popular a few months ago, but has kind of faded away as of late.

[name_f]My[/name_f] list would be
Finn/Finley
[name_m]Edmund[/name_m]
Caspian/Cassian
[name_u]Atlas[/name_u]
[name_u]Jupiter[/name_u]
[name_m]Shepherd[/name_m]
[name_u]Emrys[/name_u]
[name_m]Pascal[/name_m]
Zephyr/Zephyro

[name_f]Lavender[/name_f]
[name_u]Hyacinth[/name_u]
Flora/Florence
[name_f]Anouk[/name_f]
[name_f]Dorothea[/name_f]
[name_u]Juniper[/name_u]
[name_f]Jane[/name_f]
[name_f]Rose[/name_f]- names
[name_f]Sylvie[/name_f]

Really, it’s just [name_u]Fox[/name_u] for me, but I think it’s mostly because of a personal association.

I usually like nameberry names, and I have no problem saying that lol. But I don’t like [name_m]Cosmo[/name_m] whatsoever. It’s less vintage charm and more fairly odd parent to me. Maybe that’s an older [name_f]Gen[/name_f] Z thing.

ETA: Agree with commenters about [name_u]Greer[/name_u].

This was totally my association for years :joy: BUT one day I came across it in a different context and it totally changed it for me, now it’s on my list!
