I’ve come to realize, recently, that because of my synesthesia, I have a bit of an odd naming quirk—I can hardly ever bring myself to add a combo to my list if there isn’t at least one vowel name in the combo (the only exception to this is if there is alliteration—Tobias [name_m]Benjamin[/name_m] [name_m]Blaise[/name_m] works great in my head, but I could never do [name_m]Tobias[/name_m] [name_m]Benjamin[/name_m] Noble!). [name_f][/name_f] I have exactly one name per gender on my list that has 3 consonant names (Zoe [name_f]Wisteria[/name_f] [name_f]Charlotte[/name_f] and [name_m]Cyrus[/name_m] Lionheart [name_m]John[/name_m], in case anyone is wondering what they are. [name_f][/name_f] )
[name_f][/name_f]
It’s got me wondering about other name nerds and what quirks they might have when it comes to combo building or what names actually make it to your list, so I’d love to hear your naming quirks, if you’re willing to share them with me!
I rarely like names of the same syllable count next to each other, with the exception of 3 syllables!!
[name_f][/name_f]
Only a few of my combos have 2 syllable names next to each other, and usually only for middle names (Loveday [name_f]Selene[/name_f] / [name_f]Esme[/name_f] Larkspur) [name_f][/name_f]For some reason though I just loveee the sound of 3 syllable names next to one another (Clelia [name_f]Beatrice[/name_f], [name_f]Viola[/name_f] [name_f]Cordelie[/name_f], [name_f]Cleophee[/name_f] [name_f]Louisa[/name_f], [name_f]Saskia[/name_f] [name_f]Thessaly[/name_f], [name_m]Lysander[/name_m] [name_m]Elliott[/name_m], [name_m]Faraday[/name_m] [name_m]Augustine[/name_m], Sylvelin [name_m]Augustus[/name_m], etc.)!!
When I’m putting together names they all have texture & color to them. And in order for the name to feel right it has to be a perfect blend of soft & hard and the right mix of colors. Usually I like one name to be a little more solid and the other to be a little softer. And then the colors have to go together to it can’t be lime green with a burgundy.
[name_f][/name_f]
And all of that is very subjective and hard to explain to people
I tend to stay away from having one syllable names next to each other, including middles and surnames.
[name_f][/name_f]
To an extent I do need the vibes of names to fit each other when it comes to combos. I’m currently considering what I’d name just one boy and debating if I could handle [name_m]Lysander[/name_m] and [name_m]Caspian[/name_m] in the same combo. As much as I adore both, they really feel like different people to me.
[name_f][/name_f]
Also when I was a baby namenerd, I used to insist on sibsets with the same number of letters, and specifically only had 7 letter names on my ‘would use’ firsts list. Thankfully I’ve relaxed on that since then [name_f][/name_f].
As I am currently in my family building years, I would like all of our children to be linked by one letter even subtly. All but our second favorite boys name has this letter and it’s driving me crazy because we both ADORE the name combo but I’m trying to shove this letter into it somehow lol
I actually love this though haha. [name_f][/name_f] I used to fantasize about a sibset like [name_m]Samuel[/name_m], [name_f]Cosima[/name_f], [name_f]Sophia[/name_f], [name_m]Caspar[/name_m], and [name_f]Elisa[/name_f]! [name_f][/name_f] Second middle or an alternate spelling, maybe?
lol I was the opposite—I could not stand having two names with the same number of letters back to back! [name_f][/name_f] I’ve relaxed my rule and have [name_f]Adele[/name_f] [name_f]Petra[/name_f] [name_f]Christiana[/name_f] on my list, but I can’t bring myself to consider something like [name_f]Adele[/name_f] [name_f]Petra[/name_f] [name_f]Maria[/name_f] lol.
Yes!!! Like how do you explain to someone that [name_f]Felicity[/name_f] [name_f]Brynja[/name_f] just DOES not work, you can’t have fuzzy, peachy-orange [name_f]Felicity[/name_f] next to metallic blue [name_f]Brynja[/name_f]? [name_f][/name_f] It’s just too jarring and orange and blue together contrast each other, they don’t complement each other! [name_f][/name_f]
[name_f][/name_f]
This is the hardest thing about making threads for me, because I don’t know how to explain my synesthesia and if I tried it would be an entire essay! [name_f][/name_f] [name_f][/name_f]. Sometimes if a letter is going to get closer to the imagery in my mind I’ll share that… but it still is very hard. [name_f][/name_f] [name_f][/name_f]. And the fact that it’s different for each person!
At one point I think my top 3 for girls all had 3-3-1 as their syllable count haha. [name_f][/name_f] I cannot stomach 2-2-2 especially with my two-syllable surname… it is so BORING
Oddly enough, my name quirk is that I don’t make or share combos very often haha. Nowadays I only make combos that I would truly consider should I have another baby, and most of my meaningful names are used in rotation, sometimes paired with a new name crush that I can visualize as part of our family.

The berries are amazing at coming up with gorgeous combos and I certainly can appreciate them from afar, I just don’t have many in my own pocket. Maybe, over time the interest will be there again, but not in my current season of life.
Ooh, I actually agree on that one, I prefer a mix of lengths within combos. It was sibsets with the same number of letters (e.g. [name_m]Arthur[/name_m], [name_m]Edmund[/name_m], & Walter) that I used to favour [name_f][/name_f].
I love to create stories and scenarios so naturally i spend hours on digging for interesting and unusual names, or even generate ones. I also seem to largely prefer girl names for some reason, boy names rarely attract me at all [name_f][/name_f]. [name_f][/name_f]I also love looking for international sounding names, either variations of names i know or just because i’m not fond of names in my own country lol. Don’t know why, maybe they just sound too common for me. Afterall, a popular name in a country won’t especially be in another.
I just love names that start with A for some reason. I’m fully aware of it and I’m really trying to move away from half my characters having a name that starts with A but… gosh they’re awesome. I also like girl names a lot more than boy names.
[name_f][/name_f]
Actually, I checked my list, it’s kind of okay! Only five out of the thirty have a name that starts with an A. I’ve never actually cared about how names go together very much, few of my characters have a middle name and when they do it’s just something random, not as much effort put into it. I like middle names to be more popular than the first name in general. If I like a middle name idea too much I’m gonna end up swapping the first and middle name at some point lol
Apparently I really like the long A sound. [name_f]Léa[/name_f], [name_f]Esme[/name_f], [name_m]Xavier[/name_m], Jacob…
[name_f][/name_f]
I like to find meanings and connections in names, even subtle ones, but probably the most important thing to me is the sound and rhythm. I sing my son’s name to different tunes all the time.
oh this is so fun! [name_f][/name_f] [name_f]My[/name_f] parents took songs they knew and changed the words to create each of us our own “song” but this seems even more fun haha.
