[name_m]Hi[/name_m] all!
I have a name challenge for you.
Since my daughter was born this spring, my dad’s girlfriend has expressed some sensitivity around what the baby should call her.
For a variety of reasons, I’m not comfortable with giving a traditional grandmother name. However, I am open to her having a special nickname. I’d like to broach that conversation by offering some ideas/examples.
To spark ideas: her name is [name_f]Jacqueline[/name_f], and she is originally from the UK.
Would love to hear your creative ideas!
My daughter calls my step-mother [name_f]Nana[/name_f]-[name_f]Anita[/name_f] (or [name_f]Nanita[/name_f]) - sounds silly but it seems a bit less “official” than just using “[name_f]Nana[/name_f]”.
Could you do the same in your case? [name_f]Nanny[/name_f] Jacq?
We use a diminutive of her name like the above poster recommended. It’s been that way since my kids were babies. It works well for us, she feels special and loved, and there’s no grandmotherly name involved.
A nickname as others have suggested, like JJ, [name_u]Jackie[/name_u], [name_u]Jay[/name_u], would work well!
I’ve also heard people use ‘alternative’ grandparent names like [name_f]Mimi[/name_f] or Marmie. [name_m]Even[/name_m] something like Auntie [name_u]Jay[/name_u] might work since Auntie gets used more often for non-family members anyway?

I call my Grandfather’s wife a sort of childish nickname of her name (in my case [name_f]Kitty[/name_f]) and it’s worked well for us, maybe [name_f]Kiki[/name_f] for [name_f]Jacqueline[/name_f]? That way it’s not a nickname she would get from anyone else like [name_u]Jackie[/name_u].
