What should I do?

Warning: This will inevitably become a long, rambly post. [name]Feel[/name] free to skip right to the bottom for the actual question.

[name]Arthur[/name] has been my top name for such a long time now. I love that it’s classic and vintage, and it honours one of my favourite authors, Sir [name]Arthur[/name] [name]Conan[/name] [name]Doyle[/name] {he wrote the [name]Sherlock[/name] [name]Holmes[/name] books}. It’s very popular here in [name]England[/name] {It’s in the top 70}, but I love it so much I can get past the popularity issue. However, I struggle to find a girls name that I love, and any time I do find one, it’s way too similar to [name]Arthur[/name] {for example [name]Adelaide[/name], [name]Anthea[/name], [name]Martha[/name], and [name]Edith[/name] - [name]Arthur[/name] and [name]Edith[/name] share the “th” sound, [name]Anthea[/name] and [name]Arthur[/name] sound too similar, [name]Adelaide[/name] and [name]Arthur[/name] both start with A, and I don’t like matching initial sib-sets, [name]Martha[/name] rhymes with [name]Arthur[/name]}. The only other boys name that I love is [name]Jackson[/name], after [name]DeForest[/name] [name]Kelley[/name], who played Dr [name]Leonard[/name] [name]McCoy[/name] in [name]Star[/name] Trek: TOS and the first six [name]Star[/name] Trek movies {Motion Picture -> Undiscovered Country}. My only issue with [name]Jackson[/name] is that it seems very trendy nowadays, and is also very popular, and it doesn’t pair well at all with any of the girls names despite the fact that minus the trendiness, it is a pretty classic name.

So I can either keep [name]Arthur[/name], which I love so, so much, and have a girls list comprised of names that I don’t love, and sometimes barely like, because I’ve looked and looked and I cannot find a single girls name that I love - even the ones that were too similar to [name]Arthur[/name] were only “like”, I didn’t love them like I love [name]Arthur[/name]. The only other girl name is [name]Ottilie[/name], but I’m not sure I would use it myself because I don’t like how it sounds when I say it. Alternatively, I can abandon [name]Arthur[/name] and have [name]Jackson[/name] as my top boys name, and have my girls list of the names I really like {[name]Adelaide[/name] and [name]Edith[/name] being the main ones}, even though I hate how they sound with [name]Jackson[/name] {I like sib-sets to be cohesive, I don’t want a “trendy” sounding name with very vintage names}.

There are other names that I like {e.g [name]Caspian[/name], [name]Micah[/name], [name]Julian[/name], [name]Ophelia[/name], [name]Beatrice[/name], [name]Iris[/name]}, but I only like them, I don’t love them and I don’t think I would use them. My list has been very sparse in the past few months because of this issue and I really don’t know how to resolve it because no matter how hard I look {I’ve looked at every single Nameberry list, I’ve trawled the forums asking for suggestions, I’ve practically stalked other people’s listographies in hope of finding something that I like, but I just can’t}. I’m being extremely picky, I know that, and I’m probably way overthinking this, but I can’t find anything that I love. And I want to love the name like I love [name]Arthur[/name], I don’t just want to “settle” {I’ll probably have to “settle” when I’m actually having a baby, but for now I’m on my own so it’s my feelings that count haha} for something that I barely like.

It also bothers me that the two boys names mean something {they both honour famous people} while none of the girls names do. I love [name]Shakespeare[/name], and thought about using a Shakespearean name, but I can’t see myself using most of them, and a lot are way too out there for me. I just don’t have a connection to a name, which I suppose is why I can’t find any that I like.

Also, I’m not asking for your opinion on all the names, because I don’t love them - except Arthur - enough to use. Even if you think Arthur and Edith are fine, I don’t.

So my question is kind of what I said in paragraph two. [name]Do[/name] I keep [name]Arthur[/name] and continue the painstaking search for more girls names, or do I abandon it and have [name]Jackson[/name] as my #1 and use the other girls names that don’t really go very well with it? Ignore your personal feelings on whether you personally would prefer [name]Arthur[/name] or [name]Jackson[/name], please.

What about loving [name]Arthur[/name] and keep hunting? I understand you aren’t pregnant yet so you can keep searching for something you love as much as [name]Arthur[/name]. The future father may have girls names that we likes or family names he wants to use.

I feel your pain, but I say not to worry

This.

I wouldn’t worry about [name]Arthur[/name] and [name]Edith[/name]. Yes, both names have the “th” sound but that’s not a bad thing. Besides, you could end up with two boys or no boys! Keep it on the list until you have your first child.

I would keep [name]Arthur[/name]! It’s a great name! 1) It’s been your favorite for a long time and 2) [name]Jackson[/name] is SUPER trendy. Plus, it wouldn’t solve your problem because it doesn’t go with your girl names in style. [name]Jackson[/name] and [name]Martha[/name]? That doesn’t work [name]IMO[/name]. Plus, I just really dislike it.

It seems to me that almost all the names you’ve mentioned (even if you only like them) are classic/vintage, so [name]Jackson[/name] sticks out like a sore thumb ([name]Jack[/name] would be a lovely match but I’m guessing that’s out due to its popularity here). It also sounds like you’re not feeling it anyway, if you hate how it sounds with your girl names and hate mismatched sibsets. If I were you, I’d keep on hunting for names to match [name]Arthur[/name] and/or hunt for special meanings for the girl names you already like to make them feel more special- authors/characters/artists/actors/scientists anything that has meaning in your life. Any friends or relatives you could honour by putting a twist on their name? A character from a bible story which reflects your life? Names from your heritage- Scottish, Welsh, [name]German[/name]… [name]Vulcan[/name]?! [name]Shakespeare[/name]- any twists on names or names with themes from the plays? Anything -no matter how tenuous- that could add meaning and make them more lovable.

Personally I really love all the boy names in my lists and could quite easily name 50 sons, but I only like the girl names and find it difficult to love them, so I kind of know how you feel. Sometimes it just takes time- coming across a very inspirational book character or news story or person [name]IRL[/name] and suddenly falling hook, line and sinker for their names. Happened to me before  And I think [name]Arthur[/name] and [name]Edith[/name] together are absolutely lovely, as are [name]Arthur[/name] and [name]Ottilie[/name]! [name]Don[/name]'t give up hope; I’m sure you’ll find something eventually

I also found after a while of hunting that all my fav names are similar in sound, like [name]Freya[/name] and [name]Lyra[/name]. [name]Ronan[/name] and [name]Roman[/name]…

What im doing is picking my top fav name for either sex and giving to the first born then when and if I have the second decide then to either hunt for a new name (and maybe use my fav as a middle) or see if my tastes have changed. Which i assume happens?!?

e.g First girl [name]Freya[/name] [name]Scarlett[/name]
second girl [name]Iris[/name] [name]Lyra[/name]

In either case id keep your top favourites for now and keep an ear out for any names along the way

As usual, I agree with Copy&Paste up there. Keep [name]Arthur[/name], you love it and it rocks! And see if you can find some other names you love too. And we can always help you…

When you hang around name nerds who keep copious lists of name combinations, it’s easy to feel like you’re somehow behind the times for NOT having a long list of favorites, a Top 10, whatever. You’re not. [name]Truly[/name] – not all of us actually have, immediately at our disposal, massive lists of names we [name]LOVE[/name] and would really use. I could easily name a half-dozen sons but I struggle to find a girls’ name that has the right balance of the elements I’m looking for. [name]Just[/name] keep hunting – there is really no need to have a huge list RIGHT NOW, or even at all, for that matter. When a name has the right meaning and appeal to touch you, you’ll know.

As far as your dilemma with [name]Arthur[/name] and [name]Jackson[/name], why not replace [name]Jackson[/name] with [name]Leonard[/name]? [name]Arthur[/name] & [name]Leonard[/name]…yes, that works. Or, hypothetically, if you have a girl, what about Artura?

[name]Just[/name] keep looking. There are millions of names out there and you’re looking for that one gem. It can take awhile.

Thank you everyone!

dindlee; That’s probably what I’m going to do, thanks! I love [name]Arthur[/name] too much to let it go haha. I’ll keep searching!

scarletrune; I’m still thinking about [name]Edith[/name], I’m not sure if I would use it myself, yet!

thatkathryngirl; I do love [name]Jackson[/name], but I agree that it’s trendy and [name]Jackson[/name] & [name]Martha[/name] would be odd together. Makes me sad :frowning:

charlieandperry1; I’ve actually always had the issue of liking more boys names than girls! A few months ago I had the same problem as you: being able to name lots of sons, but daughters would have been very difficult!

bettydogooder; I’m hoping that I’ll just find a name I love eventually haha! [name]Freya[/name], [name]Lyra[/name], [name]Ronan[/name], and [name]Roman[/name] are lovely! It is a shame that they’re all so similar!

ottilie; I think I will keep [name]Arthur[/name] for now, and continue the search! Thank you (:

saracita00; Ooh I do love [name]Leonard[/name]! Not sure how well that would go down with my family {they tease my cousin for naming her daughter [name]Luna[/name] all the time, so I’m not sure [name]Leonard[/name] would be tease-free haha}. But I like it, especially the character reference, so I may consider it!
