I’ve recently fallen for the charms of [name_f]Callie[/name_f] as a stand alone name, so much so that its now at the top of my (hypothetical) girls’ list. [name_f]My[/name_f] husband has always loved it, but I thought of it as a nn only and didn’t love or couldn’t use any longer versions- [name_f]Calliope[/name_f], [name_f]Callista[/name_f], [name_f]Calanthe[/name_f]/a, [name_f]Caroline[/name_f]/a, [name_f]Calla[/name_f], [name_u]Calypso[/name_u] and even [name_f]Coralie[/name_f] were all considered but struck off the list.
So, what sort of person do you think of as being a [name_f]Callie[/name_f]? Does it have any strong associations for you? Is it dated or trendy? I’m really curious because I don’t think i’ve met one, even though i know there must be quite a few about. I have quite a strong image for [name_f]Callie[/name_f] (outdoorsy, open, beautiful, loves the ocean, a real sunshine girl) and I’m wondering if it matches other people’s perception.
I’ve only ever known Callies to be really annoying, bratty, and diva-ish. Or very weird. I think it’s very trendy and I don’t like it because of the girls I’ve met with the name.
[name_f]Callie[/name_f] has been used as a nickname for quite some time. I think it is very sweet. I can easily see it being used as a full name along with names like; [name_f]Millie[/name_f], [name_f]Hattie[/name_f], [name_f]Lottie[/name_f], …
[name_f]Callie[/name_f] would be a lively little girl. She would enjoy skipping around and singing songs. She is a free spirit. As an adult, [name_f]Callie[/name_f] would be involved in her children’s activities and sports; den leader, head of PTA, coach. She makes people happy and livens up the crowd.
[name_f]Callie[/name_f] feels like it has transformed more than other nickname names like [name_f]Winnie[/name_f] or [name_f]Lottie[/name_f]. It feels much more trendy to me, but not terrible or super common. I have met a few and they were sorority girls in my classes in college. It has always reminded me of [name_u]California[/name_u], which is also a sunny and outgoing girl image.
I think it’s nice.
To me it’s a very ‘American’ name along with [name_f]Briana[/name_f], [name_f]Alana[/name_f] and those kinds of names.
For some reason it makes me think of a very cool teenage girl, blonde. Though that makes no difference!
I think you use it if you like it and don’t worry about what other people think of it!
I think [name_f]Callie[/name_f] works pretty well as a nickname. It’s not as cutesy as other nicknames so I think it grows up well. It reminds me of [name_u]Abby[/name_u] in that way. I agree with lovemysweeties, [name_f]Callie[/name_f] seems like a warm, open, outgoing name. I see her as a friendly people person. I don’t see her as adventurous necessarily but as a people person. I definitely would see her enjoying camping though, and being a camp counselor. Not a fashionista but a practical girl.
[name_f]Callie[/name_f] sounds very blonde to me. When I hear the name, I picture a happy, care-free young blonde surfing off a beach in [name_u]California[/name_u].
I see [name_f]Callie[/name_f] standing on its own well.
I see more of [name_u]Cali[/name_u] being a nn for [name_f]Callista[/name_f], [name_u]Calypso[/name_u], [name_f]Coralie[/name_f], [name_f]Calliope[/name_f], etc. I have seen [name_u]Cali[/name_u] as a nn for [name_f]Camille[/name_f]/[name_f]Camilla[/name_f].
To me it is another form of [name_u]Allie[/name_u]. A name I see more often as a first name rather than a nn.
It is a very fun, warm, free-spirited kind of name.
I once liked the name [name_f]Callie[/name_f], spelled as Kalleigh (I was an odd 15 year old), but anyways, I pictured a blonde haired little girl who is athletic and fun, the kind who is always cheerful and full of life. I picture a bubbly personality as well.
Thanks for all the lovely replies! I’m really pleased that so many of you have positive associations with [name_f]Callie[/name_f]. I would agree with a lot of your imagery- I too picture [name_u]California[/name_u] sunshine, blonde hair and a free, unpretentious spirit. I’m also really interested that so many of you think of it as a stand-alone name. I will definitely keep [name_f]Callie[/name_f] [name_f]Susannah[/name_f] or [name_f]Callie[/name_f] [name_f]Susannah[/name_f] [name_f]Pearl[/name_f] at the top of my girls’ list just in case we have another
[name_f]My[/name_f] first reaction was “it’s a dogs name!” [name_f]My[/name_f] childhood dog was named [name_f]Callie[/name_f] and so it will always be a dog name for me.
Honestly, I agree with most of people’s perspectives of [name_f]Callie[/name_f], the only other example I can add is [name_f]Caroline[/name_f] in The Vampire Diaries. That may be a terrible example and they never even call her [name_f]Callie[/name_f] during the show, her nickname is Care; but I just see that fused with sunny, Californian, road trip kind of girls. No clue why. It’s a great nickname, I love [name_f]Caroline[/name_f] and [name_f]Catalina[/name_f] as longer forms.
Agreed! I wish I could like it, because I think it really suits some of my favorites, and all, but the one [name_f]Callie[/name_f] I knew was sickeningly sweet, very friendly, but pretty much shunned you if she didn’t like you. She could be very whiny and petulant, and was one of those girls who couldn’t do anything for herself. (You know the sort? “Oh, [name_m]Henry[/name_m], I can’t lift this box. Can you carry it for me?” I don’t label myself as a feminist, but that has always bugged the crap out of me, lol. You’re a woman, not an invalid. Pick up the dumb box yourself!)
Then again, I’ve only known one [name_f]Callie[/name_f], so it’s hardly fair to judge my opinion on the one [name_f]Callie[/name_f] I’ve known. And besides, there are numerous names out there that I see in a light that no one else sees–besides the nicknamey factor of it (which is what bothers me most of all), it’s a fine name, and the combo in your signature, [name_f]Callie[/name_f] [name_f]Susannah[/name_f], is really nice. If you love it, I would go for it. It doesn’t seem very memorable or classy or classic or exciting to me, but I’m sure others would say that of some of my other favorites (or much worse!) so I think that’s really neither here nor there, as long as you love it.
I hate to say it, but [name_f]Callie[/name_f] does feel a bit dated and trendy to me. I strongly prefer your longer forms with the nickname [name_f]Callie[/name_f]. Especially next to [name_u]Juniper[/name_u]. [name_u]Juniper[/name_u] and [name_f]Calliope[/name_f]/[name_f]Callista[/name_f]/[name_f]Calanthe[/name_f]/[name_f]Calla[/name_f]/[name_f]Coralie[/name_f] are all so pretty! I also think [name_f]Caroline[/name_f] nn [name_f]Callie[/name_f] is adorable! [name_f]Cassia[/name_f] nn [name_f]Cassie[/name_f] is another idea.
I’ve known three; two my age (late 20s) and one should be about 10 now. None were blonde and they were a bit ditzy; sweet girls but kooky. It’s a nicknamey, cutesy, non-serious name so I think their personalities developed to fit it (or the name reflects their parents’ personalities and therefore the way they were raised)
I’ve only ever known one [name_f]Callie[/name_f] (her name was just [name_f]Callie[/name_f]) – I taught her [name_f]Sunday[/name_f] School class when I was younger. She had long, blonde hair and was very sweet but sort of gave me the impression might have grown up to be a bit bratty and snotty. I also know one [name_u]Cali[/name_u] (short for [name_f]Calliope[/name_f]), but that feels like a totally different name to me, even though I realize they are very similar.
That said, I love this name. I have it on my list as a nn for [name_f]Caroline[/name_f], but I think it can absolutely work on its own (a la [name_f]Hattie[/name_f], [name_f]Molly[/name_f], etc.). And I don’t really understand the trendiness factor – it doesn’t seem trendy at all to me. Are you thinking it’s trendy for now or trendy for some time in the past?
