DH and I have had the name [name]Arwen[/name] [name]Louisa[/name] picked out for our little girl, due [name]March[/name] 13th, since I was about 18 weeks along. That’s around the time that we found out that we were expecting a daughter. We both still really like the name, but now we’re thinking that we want to have a short list ready just in case [name]Arwen[/name] [name]Louisa[/name] doesn’t fit just right.
Some first names DH just threw out to me are [name]Hazel[/name], [name]Temperance[/name], [name]Helena[/name], and Harpeth. These are all names (except for Harpeth) that I threw out to him over the first few weeks of pregnancy and they just stuck with him.
Harpeth isn’t technically a people name. It’s the name of a river that runs through TN which is where he’s from. We drove over that river once years ago and I said, “Harpeth would make an interesting name” and it’s stuck with him ever since. He REALLY likes it. I’m not so certain.
To add to this whole conundrum, our 3 year old son, [name]Benton[/name] [name]Grover[/name], has decided that his “beebee sisser’s” name is [name]Augie[/name] Woo. He started calling her this a couple of months ago after hearing me and DH call her “[name]Ari[/name] [name]Lou[/name]”, short for [name]Arwen[/name] [name]Louisa[/name]. Now my WHOLE family calls her [name]Augie[/name] Woo. This is fine with me. I think it’s cute and hilarious. It got me to thinking that maybe I should run with it though. What about [name]Augustine[/name] or just [name]August[/name]? I know a lot of people don’t like boys names on girls, but that’s one that I do.
So [name]Arwen[/name] [name]Louisa[/name], [name]Hazel[/name], [name]Temperance[/name], [name]Helena[/name], Harpeth, [name]Augustine[/name], or [name]August[/name]? What names should we add to our list? What middle names would you put with the new names. And for good measure, tell me which one is your favorite? Our last name is Manis. [name]TIA[/name]!
Have you considered [name]Augusta[/name]? I do really like [name]Arwen[/name] [name]Louise[/name]. Since it’s the name from which your son originally got “[name]Augie[/name] Woo,” it could definitely still produce that nickname among family and friends. (Nicknames, after all, don’t have to have any connection to the given name, though in this case it truly does.) Harpeth is cool too, and it sticks out to me from your list particularly because of the fact that your husband has remembered your comment about it all these years. It’s sweet that he remembered that, as most husbands aren’t into naming quite like we women are. Clearly it made an impression on him, which makes me like it for you.
If you want a short list to go to the hospital with I would take the ones you have been deliberating about.
- [name]Arwen[/name] [name]Louisa[/name] - you obviously keep coming back to this
- [name]Imogen[/name] [name]Louisa[/name] - I don’t think the [name]Emma[/name] thing will be an issue once she’s born.
- [name]Hazel[/name] [name]Louisa[/name] - just because I think it sounds lovely with [name]Benton[/name]
I’m not a huge fan of [name]Augusta[/name]. It’s a great name, but it’s also the name of a not so great town in Arkansas (where we live). My son’s name is [name]Benton[/name]. Also the name of a not so great town in Arkansas. His name at least has family connection. DH’s great grandpa’s name was [name]Benton[/name]. [name]Augusta[/name] has no family connection. I don’t think I want two children who share names with towns in Arkansas.
I have a feeling that my baby girl will always be [name]Augie[/name] Woo among family no matter what her real name is, and that’s fine with me. It doesn’t have to have a connection to her real name. I just thought it might be kind of cool.
You are one of the only persons to give me some positive feedback on Harpeth, alzora. Thank you for that! I think that’s a big part of the reason I’m so iffy on it. [name]Every[/name] time I post a thread about it I get bombarded with comments about how awful it is. lol
As much as I love [name]Imogen[/name], milenaviolet, it’s out. DH just can’t get on board with it. It makes me sad, but I want both of us to love our baby girl’s name.
[name]Arwen[/name] [name]Louisa[/name] aka “[name]Ari[/name] [name]Lou[/name]” aka “[name]Augie[/name] Woo” is a wonderful name! I love the story behind the second nn and think she could be all three of those names with no problem! If you want first name that fits the nn ‘[name]Augie[/name]’ my preference is [name]Augustina[/name]. So possibly [name]Augustina[/name] [name]Louise[/name]? I also think the story of Harpeth is nice but I’m not sure where it fits. [name]How[/name] do you feel about two middles? [name]Augustina[/name] Harpeth [name]Louise[/name]? It’s pretty but much more elaborate than [name]Arwen[/name] [name]Louisa[/name]. Of you other name I like [name]Hazel[/name] and [name]Helena[/name]. You have some nice options but I still feel [name]Arwen[/name] [name]Louisa[/name] gives you 2 beautiful and sentimental nicknames that make perfect sense.
I love [name]Arwen[/name] [name]Louisa[/name]! I hope you stick with that.
If you do go with an Aug- name, to me [name]Augustine[/name] is very male. I associate it with St. [name]Augustine[/name] (pr. uh-[name]GUS[/name]-tin) pretty strongly. And pronounced [name]AH[/name]-gus-teen it’s pretty strongly associated with grass.
[name]Augusta[/name] and [name]August[/name] are ok but nowhere near as pretty as [name]Arwen[/name].
Harpeth sounds awkward and made-up to me. I want to like it but I can’t get there.
[name]Hazel[/name] is soft, pretty and vintage, but doesn’t match [name]Arwen[/name]'s specialness.
[name]Temperance[/name] is an interesting virtue name but such a weird and specific virtue that I think, like [name]Chastity[/name], it should remain on the outs. There is nothing wrong with chastity or temperance, but naming a daughter that just feels like a dare. [name]Prudence[/name] is much nicer.
Of your alternates, [name]Helena[/name] is my favorite. Elegant, feminine, classic.
But still - nothing you’ve suggested matches that whimsical liveliness of [name]Arwen[/name] [name]Louisa[/name]. I’d stick with it.
OK so here’s what I’m thinking now.
[name]Arwen[/name] [name]Louisa[/name] Manis
[name]August[/name] [name]Honora[/name] Manis
Harpeth [name]Honora[/name] Manis
[name]Hazel[/name] [name]Louisa[/name] Manis
[name]Vesper[/name] [name]Alena[/name] Manis ([name]Lena[/name] was my great granny’s name and it would be so cool to be able to honor her.)
For some reason I’m really liking this 2-3 syllable flow. I’m throwing out [name]Augustine[/name] and [name]Temperance[/name] because I’m starting to feel like they’re both too big and clunky. [name]Helena[/name] I love, but it seems like everyone is naming their sons names that end in N and their daughters names that end in A. I’d like to break away from that. Adding [name]Vesper[/name] because I just remembered it and I know DH really likes it too. What do y’all think?
I really love the name Harpeth. It’s so different all names seem weird at first but the more I say it the more I like it. Not a fun of [name]August[/name] or [name]Augustine[/name] for some reason. I like but don’t love [name]Arwen[/name] I do love [name]Wren[/name] though. I love your middle name choice of [name]Louisa[/name]! Harpeth [name]Louisa[/name] or [name]Wren[/name] [name]Louisa[/name] is cute
Name I [name]Adore[/name] * [name]Harper[/name], [name]Wren[/name], [name]Freya[/name], [name]Violet[/name]*[name]Ryland[/name], [name]Jack[/name], [name]Raymond[/name],
I think [name]Arwen[/name] [name]Louisa[/name] is great! I wouldn’t change it just because of her new family nickname.
Harpeth could make a nice middle name, but I probably wouldn’t use it upfront.
I would go with what you’ve already decided on. [name]Arwen[/name] Lousia is a lovely name combo.
My second pick would be [name]Augusta[/name] or [name]Temperance[/name] (I know a lot of people don’t like this name, but i actually really love virtue names)
I like [name]Arwen[/name] [name]Louisa[/name] a lot. But Harpeth could make a nice middle. Maybe [name]Agnes[/name] would get you closer to [name]Augie[/name]? [name]Agnes[/name] Harpeth nn [name]Aggie[/name] or [name]Augie[/name]?
I like [name]Arwen[/name] [name]Louisa[/name] just fine.
Harpeth is really unattractive sounding, and the most intuitive nickname is Harpy, which has a pretty awful meaning. I think your daughter will be very thankful if you go with [name]Arwen[/name] [name]Louisa[/name] instead of Harpeth. [name]Hazel[/name] is nice too.
Congratulations!
Okay firstly I would stick with [name]Arwen[/name] [name]Louisa[/name] as your so sure on the name and she is priceless. However I think it’s always good to have a back up choice just in case your baby doesn’t look like an [name]Arwen[/name] [name]Louisa[/name] but looks like a [name]Esmeralda[/name] [name]Charlotte[/name]
Personally I dislike [name]Hazel[/name], [name]Temperance[/name] & Harpeth. [name]Hazel[/name] too me seems dated yet trendy I dislike her sound and constantly think of hazelnuts something I dislike the taste off. [name]Temperance[/name] is too over the top and looks rather wild in a strange way. Wheras Harpeth seems rather violent. Yet I do like [name]Helena[/name] she’s sweet and even though I dislike most of her variants especially [name]Helen[/name] which ironically is my beloved sister’s name. [name]Helena[/name] is a graceful choice that feels rather spirited.
I love the whole [name]Augie[/name] Woo thing to that’s rather cute. I do like [name]Augustine[/name] but I dislike [name]August[/name] for a girl. However my favourite ‘august’ name for a girl is [name]Augusta[/name] she sounds so fiesty and firey. Brilliant choice. I think [name]Augusta[/name] [name]Louise[/name] Manis sounds great for [name]Augusta[/name] [name]Winnie[/name] Manis sounds poetic and goes with the whole augie woo thing.
Middle name for…
[name]Hazel[/name] [name]Juliet[/name] Manis
[name]Temperance[/name] [name]Olivia[/name] Manis
[name]Helena[/name] [name]Niamh[/name] Manis
Harpeth [name]Penelope[/name] Manis
Suggestions:
[name]Theodora[/name]
[name]Pearl[/name]
[name]Winter[/name]
[name]Gabriella[/name]
[name]Violet[/name]/[name]Viola[/name]
[name]Beatrice[/name]
[name]Hope[/name] this helped x
I think [name]Arwen[/name] [name]Louise[/name] is an absolute winner!
Congratulations on your little girl’s imminent arrival. Wishing you all the very best - and please keep us posted!
