I have this character named [name_u]Sam[/name_u] who sometimes goes by the nickname Salty. He’s in his mid twenties and has a four year old daughter. [name_u]Sam[/name_u] is an officer with the royal navy (for a fictional country in my story) and because his daughter’s mother is not in the picture, he has to leave her with family friends when he is away at sea.
I’ve been calling her [name_f]Abri[/name_f] (pronounced ab-ree with a long A sound) for the longest time. The idea for her name was that [name_u]Sam[/name_u] didn’t know anything about babies, let alone naming a baby, so he made one up. Recently, I found that abri (pronounced more like uh-bree) is a [name_m]French[/name_m] word for a shelter or dugout and I’m not sure I can continue using [name_f]Abri[/name_f] as a name.
I’m thinking, maybe just changing it to the similar sounding [name_u]Aubrey[/name_u]. I’m also considering [name_f]Grace[/name_f] for the character, but that name is connected to her deadbeat mother who is named [name_f]Hannah[/name_f] (which means grace).
A little bit about the girl: She’s a normal, sweet, happy four year old. She loves bugs (especially spiders) even though her dad detests them, and she hates when her dad has to sail off with the navy.
So what do you think? Is [name_f]Abri[/name_f] still usable or should I move along? What about [name_u]Aubrey[/name_u] or [name_f]Grace[/name_f]? [name_f]Do[/name_f] you have any other suggestions for me?
Thanks for sticking with this, fellow berries. I eagerly await your welcome feedback.
Well my dad was in the navy and he had two daughters me and then four years later my sister.
My name is [name_u]Chelsea[/name_u] [name_f]Maura[/name_f] and my little sister is [name_f]Alison[/name_f] [name_f]Maire[/name_f]
[name_u]Chelsea[/name_u] means a chalk wharf and when I was living in Connecticut near the ports there were a lot of streets name [name_u]Chelsea[/name_u]
[name_f]Maura[/name_f] is the Irish form of [name_f]Mary[/name_f] and [name_f]Marie[/name_f] is the [name_m]French[/name_m] form of [name_f]Mary[/name_f] which means “Bitter” “[name_f]Beloved[/name_f]” “Wished for child” and “[name_f]Marine[/name_f]”
[name_f]Alison[/name_f] is a [name_m]Norman[/name_m] [name_m]French[/name_m] from of [name_f]Alice[/name_f] which is [name_m]German[/name_m] for [name_m]Noble[/name_m]
Oh I also read a book that the main character was a navy brat and her name was [name_f]Grace[/name_f] and the father called her his sailor girl. Later she has a daughter name [name_f]Willow[/name_f] then [name_f]Willow[/name_f] gets pregnant and has a baby girl name [name_f]Hannah[/name_f]. I just think it is interesting
Anyway hope this helps
PS I like the name [name_f]Grace[/name_f]
Well, I mean, if he knows nothing about naming a baby I doubt he would dig too hard into the meanings of names so [name_f]Abri[/name_f] is still on the table. However, I think it’s much more believable for him to pick a name from his past that he has a good association with…like a teacher who was nice to him and encouraged him to follow his dream, or a friend who died young, or his mother or grandmother. That seems more realistic. My dad is kinda like that, he picks names at random because he likes the sound of them. He gets names from old actresses his liked, from novels he liked, and from random place names like [name_u]Cheyenne[/name_u] or [name_f]Georgia[/name_f].
You could go the obvious rout with [name_u]Sailor[/name_u] nn [name_m]Say[/name_m]-[name_m]Say[/name_m]. Other more unusual suggestions: [name_u]Navy[/name_u], [name_u]Scout[/name_u], [name_u]Ocean/name_u, Atlantica, [name_f]Pacifica[/name_f], Seaside “[name_f]Cece[/name_f]”, Oceanside “Ocea”
[name_u]Love[/name_u] the other suggestions too, but my favorite is [name_f]Abri[/name_f]. Maybe change the spelling to Abrie or just plain old [name_f]Brie[/name_f]/[name_f]Bree[/name_f] (although that spelling always reminds me of the cheese)?
I like [name_f]Abri[/name_f]. It’s cute. If you’re stressed about the meaning, you could always have it be a nickname for a longer name, like [name_f]Abriana[/name_f] or [name_f]Abrielle[/name_f]. Or if this story takes place in the future, you could always say that [name_f]Abri[/name_f] is a perfectly acceptable name in this time period for whatever reason.
As for other suggestions, what about [name_f]Oceane[/name_f] or [name_u]Lindsay[/name_u]? [name_u]Lindsay[/name_u] has a water name meaning that isn’t commonly known; it could serve as a hidden [name_f]Easter[/name_f] egg for readers who bother to look up name meanings.
[name_f]Audrey[/name_f] and [name_f]Grace[/name_f] are both wonderful names too, though I personally don’t use [name_f]Grace[/name_f] much because I’ve seen it in a lot of books.
I just realized that the character like bugs so don’t name her [name_u]Chelsea[/name_u] because again my name is [name_u]Chelsea[/name_u] and I saw a centipede in one of the rooms and got my dad to kill I don’t like bugs my sister who is [name_f]Alison[/name_f] loves loves bugs and just took a college class that made her collect bugs and she still does it even when the class was finished. Again hope this helps. Also what color are her eyes going to be because if you choice blue you can make her eyes look like the ocean or use navy blue as a color.
