What would you like to name your pet?

What kind of names do you think are good for pets? Would you just use them for your pets or do you think they would make good names for people too? Are there names you really love that you’d use on a pet? Why or why not?

For me, I like the names [name_f]Molly[/name_f], [name_f]Maggie[/name_f], [name_u]Sam[/name_u], and [name_u]Christie[/name_u] for dog names and [name_f]Priscilla[/name_f] for a cat ([name_f]Prissy[/name_f] for short). I wouldn’t want to use these on my children or anything but I still like them.

I’m interested to hear your opinions!

My rabbit is named [name_m]Pip[/name_m]. He’s a boy, so I suppose it’s short for [name_m]Philip[/name_m]. I love [name_m]Pip[/name_m], but it seems to cute for a person, but perfect for a bunny.

I want a chicken named [name_f]Penelope[/name_f], so I can call her [name_f]Henny[/name_f] [name_u]Penny[/name_u]. I think [name_f]Penelope[/name_f] is a fine name for a person, but I wouldn’t use it myself.

My husband loves dogs and wants to get a [name_m]Bassett[/name_m] hound or and English bulldog someday (once we don’t have a bunny hopping around the house). If we get a hound, I’ve always thought Howey would be the perfect name. It just sounds like a hound dog name to me. I don’t particularly care for the name [name_u]Howard[/name_u], but it’s good enough for a dog. If we got a female bulldog, I’d probably name her something frilly and floral, just because it would be absurd. We’ve talked about [name_f]Lily[/name_f] maybe.

I prefer giving pets real names, as opposed to pet names like Fluffy, Rover, Snowball, etc. (with a few exceptions, like Pumpkin for a fat orange cat, [name_f]Honey[/name_f] for a lop-eared honey-colored bunny, and Chubbles for any chubby pet because it’s silly). I just think it’s funnier when an animal has a human name. I especially like ones with cutesy nicknames.

I’d love to have a domesticated squirrel named Mushroom or Pompom. I think squirrels are just the cutest little things- I wish I could [safely and legally] catch one to keep as a pet… I’m not even sure domesticated squirrels exist but if they do I want one!

If I never end up having children I’d end up using all my favourite names on pets… or things like my phone or laptop!

Being a hard-core [name_m]Harry[/name_m] [name_m]Potter[/name_m] fan, and moreover a Marauders fan, I always said that if I had a dog that was huge and had a completely black coat, like a Newfoundland, then I would name it Padfoot after [name_m]Sirius[/name_m] [name_m]Black[/name_m]'s animagus form, which seems a tad obvious now but I decided this when I was about 12 and it’s not gonna change any time soon.

[name_m]Reuben[/name_m] is a name that’s come to mind recently, when I was hoping we’d be getting another dog. I like [name_u]August[/name_u] but I don’t think I’d use it on a child so that’s an option too.

Possible future pets’ names?

I love astronomy, so: [name_m]Sirius[/name_m], [name_f]Adhara[/name_f], Gomeisa, Procyon (dogs), Nihal (rabbit). [name_u]Rigel[/name_u], [name_m]Castor[/name_m], [name_m]Pollux[/name_m], Giena, Wezen, Regulus… All stars’ names that I will not use for kids, actually.

[name_m]Pip[/name_m] is an adorable name for a bunny. I think it would work just as well for a cat too.

I also don’t care for naming animals the traditional names: Spot, Fido, Rover, etc. It’s cuter to give them more people like names.

I think some types of flying squirrels can be domesticated but I’m not entirely sure. Those would be cute names for one though.

I think [name_m]Reuben[/name_m] would be a perfect name for a dog. I prefer the name [name_u]August[/name_u] more for a person though.

All of those names seem so unique or “out there” that I had never even considered them for a pet. I don’t think I’d use them for kids either but they’re interesting!

I can’t have any pets due to allergies but I’ve often imagined naming these canine friends.

Labrador Retrievers

[name_m]Black[/name_m] - [name_m]Jasper[/name_m]
Chocolate - [name_m]Barnaby[/name_m]
Yellow - [name_m]Leo[/name_m]

[name_u]Ruby[/name_u] [name_m]King[/name_m] [name_m]Charles[/name_m] Cavalier Spaniels: [name_u]Ruby[/name_u] and [name_f]Ginger[/name_f]

Japanese [name_m]Chin[/name_m] (blk/wht) - Daichi

[name_m]Jasper[/name_m] and [name_m]Leo[/name_m] are cute names for dogs. I guess [name_u]Ruby[/name_u] would be cute for a girl dog too. Thanks for sharing your thoughts!

[name_u]Jem[/name_u]
[name_m]Chester[/name_m]
[name_m]Isaac[/name_m]
[name_m]Fenton[/name_m]
[name_m]Archie[/name_m]
[name_u]Romy[/name_u]
[name_u]Ruby[/name_u]

For cats:
[name_u]Mirren[/name_u]
Marchpane
Michaelmas
Bruges
Mossops

Considering my different names for future bunnies. So far we have:
[name_m]Male[/name_m]:
[name_u]Banjo[/name_u]
Broccoli
Chewbacca
[name_m]Cosmo[/name_m]
Sonic

Female:
[name_f]Kairi[/name_f]
Pika

Either Gender:
Bantha
[name_u]Domino[/name_u]
Tadpole

As we will rescue bunnies rather than buying them from a pet shop, we may well keep the names they already have though.

[name_m]Chester[/name_m] and [name_m]Archie[/name_m] are perfect names for a dog.

Tadpole is just too cute as a pet name. It’s neat that you’ll be rescuing them instead of just buying them from somewhere.

Haha, I actually have pet name lists. Apparently I’m quite sad. Mostly for dogs and separated into breeds that I would like to own at some point in the future.

For example:
Bingley (m) or [name_f]Bronte[/name_f] (f) - Border terrier - I already have a Bodie and I think all my borders will have B names and I’m a big fan of [name_f]Jane[/name_f] [name_u]Austen[/name_u] and the [name_f]Bronte[/name_f] sisters
Brummell (m) or [name_m]Byron[/name_m] (m) - Dandie Dinmont terrier - these were both famous dandies
[name_u]Bryn[/name_u] (m) or [name_f]Ffion[/name_f] (f) - Sealyham terrier - Welsh names as the breed is Welsh
[name_m]Abba[/name_m] (f) - Swedish vallhund - ‘cause [name_m]ABBA[/name_m] is from [name_u]Sweden[/name_u]
[name_m]Mungo[/name_m] (m) - [name_m]Gordon[/name_m] setter - Scottish name, Scottish breed
[name_f]Scarlett[/name_f] O’[name_f]Hara[/name_f] (f) - Irish setter - well they’re red and Irish, so…

I also have a list of P-names for guinea pigs and if I ever have any more rabbits they’ll have names from Watership Down, as I’ve already had a Pipkin.

Oh, fun topic!

I’ve grown up with [name_f]Nova[/name_f] [name_f]Scotia[/name_f] Duck Tolling Retrievers, so I’d love to have one of my own in the future. Or a Kooikerhondje. I’m thinking [name_m]Jasper[/name_m] (nn [name_u]Jazz[/name_u]/[name_m]Jazzy[/name_m]) for a boy, [name_u]Ruby[/name_u] for a girl.

As for cats, I’ve always had a Siamese cat and for some reason I’ve always realllllly wanted a seal point siamese named [name_u]Dexter[/name_u]. No idea why, but I do. I think [name_f]Minerva[/name_f] (nn [name_f]Minnie[/name_f]) would be precious on a girl. Or maybe [name_f]Tallulah[/name_f] (nn [name_u]Tally[/name_u] [name_f]Cat[/name_f] - how adorable is that?!).

[name_u]Dexter[/name_u] and [name_u]Tally[/name_u] are both so adorable for cats. I can imagine the name [name_u]Dexter[/name_u] for a dog too though.

My old cat was named [name_u]Makenzie[/name_u] (I named her when I was 13 or so) and then my three fish have been [name_u]Memphis[/name_u], [name_m]Neville[/name_m], and [name_f]Luna[/name_f] (the last two coming from [name_m]Harry[/name_m] [name_m]Potter[/name_m] of course). The only animal I currently have is a 4 and a half yr. old yellow lab named Axle nn [name_m]Ax[/name_m]. He is adorable and the name totally fits him. We are getting a cat soon and I am thinking about naming her [name_f]Millie[/name_f] as long as it fits her. We don’t have kids yet so I am trying to pick names that are cute but I would never use on a real child.

I like Teddy for small, curly puppies, but I wouldn’t use it for an actual kid. Also Hannibal Mungo, which could be shortened to Hibals or Mungo : ) I king of like these too:

Edgar
Maug
Keats
Hugo

And I love Scheherazade for cats : ) It has such a wonderful, mysterious Egyptian feel to it.
