What would you name Amy March from Little Women?

I put this in the [name_u]Baby[/name_u] Names category but if anyone feels like it fits better somewhere else feel free to change it!

[name_m]Little[/name_m] Women is my favorite book but I have always felt like Amy’s name didn’t exactly fit with the other sisters (although I do think it fits her character!). With [name_f]Margaret[/name_f], [name_f]Josephine[/name_f] and [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f], [name_f]Amy[/name_f] feels a bit modern and a lot shorter. And using the other sisters nicknames -Meg, [name_u]Jo[/name_u] and [name_f]Beth[/name_f]- [name_f]Amy[/name_f] still doesn’t quite match because it’s 2 syllables not 1. So my question is, if you were going to rename [name_f]Amy[/name_f] [name_u]March[/name_u] knowing her older sisters names, what would you pick? [name_u]Or[/name_u] feel free to argue it should remain [name_f]Amy[/name_f]! (:

[name_f]My[/name_f] picks

A couple I have come up with are

[name_f]Katherine[/name_f] “Kate”: I prefer [name_u]Kit[/name_u] as a nn but I think [name_f]Kate[/name_f] fits her character more, and it follows the longer classic name with a 1 syllable nn

[name_f]Caroline[/name_f] or [name_f]Charlotte[/name_f]: I think these names fit the others names and her character, but I can’t think of a 1 syllable nn for them that works

[name_f]Beatrice[/name_f] “Bea”: This fits the longer name with 1 syllable nn, but [name_f]Bea[/name_f] and [name_f]Beth[/name_f] are really close and [name_f]Beatrice[/name_f] also doesn’t feel quite as down to earth as the others do

amy is my favorite character in little women (and my favorite fictional character ever!), which is why i love the name amy. however, i do agree that her name doesn’t exactly fit with her sisters’ longer and more classic names, especially since she doesn’t have a fun nickname like the rest of them do.

katherine ‘kit’ would work very well for her, i agree. also maybe katherine ‘kate’?

i’ve seen amelia as a suggestion before, which would allow her to keep amy as a nickname, but she would have a longer name to fit her sisters’.

i also think dorothy (maybe nicknamed dot or dottie?) would fit well.

[name_f]Amelia[/name_f] is a good one, because I do think [name_f]Amy[/name_f] fits her well (:

I think [name_f]Amy[/name_f] fits her, but maybe [name_f]Amanda[/name_f] as a full name to match her sisters.

I think [name_f]Gwen[/name_f] fits her and matches with the other sisters’ names

Woohoo!! I love anything Little-Women-related!! Here I go…

So, I’ll open with an argument that—even though I’ve always agreed that [name_f]Amy[/name_f] doesn’t fit the style of her older sisters’ names—it should absolutely remain her name. I agree with you that [name_f]Amy[/name_f] absolutely fits her character / personality. She’s such an [name_f]Amy[/name_f]! Plus, [name_f]Amy[/name_f] is named for Louisa’s real-life little sister who always went by [name_f]May[/name_f] (Amy serves as an anagram of May)! I love that fact, and it makes me swoon over [name_f]Amy[/name_f] as that character’s name. It’s just so excellent and sweet.

All that said, were I to disregard history and everything else and name [name_f]Amy[/name_f] simply in a way to match her sisters’ names… my top picks would be:

  1. [name_f]Katherine[/name_f] nn [name_f]Kate[/name_f] :womans_hat: (I’d pronounce this with 3 syllables, as KATH-uh-rinn, with a light schwa as the middle syllable. I think this just really goes with the style of the older girls’ names. Straightforward and no nonsense with a peppy, one-syllable nickname!)
  2. [name_f]Harriet[/name_f] nn [name_f]Hattie[/name_f] :ballet_shoes: (I love that the fourth girl has a special two-syllable name. It sounds great with the flow in the sibling list, and I think [name_f]Hattie[/name_f] would suit [name_f]Amy[/name_f] real well besides.)
  3. [name_f]Annabel[/name_f] nn [name_f]Annie[/name_f] :bouquet: (Bonus points for sounding the most like [name_f]Amy[/name_f]! Goes with the other girls’ names while also being quite frilly in a way that I think Miss [name_f]Amy[/name_f] herself would really adore.)

Other ideas include…
[name_f]Dorothy[/name_f] nn [name_f]Dottie[/name_f] / [name_f]Dot[/name_f]
[name_f]Beatrice[/name_f] nn [name_f]Bee[/name_f]
[name_f]Charlotte[/name_f] nn [name_f]Lottie[/name_f]
[name_f]Rosemary[/name_f] nn [name_f]Rosy[/name_f]

Thanks a ton for creating this thread. I clearly had a bunch of fun with this!! xxx

[name_f]Julianna[/name_f] nn [name_u]Jules[/name_u]
[name_f]Beatrice[/name_f] nn [name_f]Bea[/name_f]
[name_f]Winifred[/name_f] nn [name_u]Win[/name_u] or [name_m]Fred[/name_m]
[name_f]Kathleen[/name_f] nn Kath
[name_f]Penelope[/name_f] nn [name_f]Nell[/name_f]
[name_f]Samantha[/name_f] nn [name_u]Sam[/name_u]
[name_f]Catharine[/name_f] nn [name_f]Cat[/name_f]
[name_f]Genevieve[/name_f] nn [name_f]Eve[/name_f]
[name_f]Jennifer[/name_f] nn [name_f]Jen[/name_f]

[name_f]My[/name_f] favourite is [name_f]Penelope[/name_f] nn [name_f]Nell[/name_f]
