What would you think?

If you met a [name_f]Polly[/name_f], what gender would they be?

I have an [name_m]Apollo[/name_m] in my signature and for me [name_f]Polly[/name_f] is all boy, but I know that almost everyone else will see [name_f]Polly[/name_f] as fully feminine. I don’t really care what others feel as I believe people grow into their names to suit their personalities, I’m just curious

When I hear [name_f]Polly[/name_f], I definitely think girl. I wouldn’t even consider the idea of [name_f]Polly[/name_f] being a boy. But the nickname [name_f]Polly[/name_f] for [name_m]Apollo[/name_m] is kind of cute.

I definitely think all girl when I hear [name_f]Polly[/name_f].
I do love the name [name_m]Apollo[/name_m] though.

I definitely think [name_f]Polly[/name_f] could work for a nickname. When I hear the name [name_f]Polly[/name_f] for a boy I automatically think of [name_m]Pauly[/name_m] D from [name_u]Jersey[/name_u] Shore (I know its not a good thought) but if you like it and your family likes it then I can’t see why you can’t use it. My brothers name is [name_m]Andrew[/name_m] and we call him [name_u]Andy[/name_u] which now days [name_u]Andy[/name_u]/[name_f]Andi[/name_f] is becoming a lot more popular as a girls name. I say go for it!

[name_f]Polly[/name_f] is all girl to me however I love [name_m]Apollo[/name_m].

In a British accent, [name_m]Pauly[/name_m] and [name_f]Polly[/name_f] sound quite different, so I’d be surprised, but not too surprised because the world is full of stranger things anyway. If he introduced himself as [name_m]Apollo[/name_m], then I’d understand the nickname [name_f]Polly[/name_f]. I also like Pollo as a nickname. Although it coincides with Spanish pollo which means chicken meat.

I love [name_m]Apollo[/name_m] but I wouldn’t use [name_f]Polly[/name_f] for a nickname. [name_f]Polly[/name_f] is all-girl (eg. [name_f]Mary[/name_f] = [name_f]Molly[/name_f] = [name_f]Polly[/name_f]). There’s nothing remotely masculine about [name_f]Polly[/name_f]. I would suggest you use either [name_u]Poe[/name_u] or [name_u]Olly[/name_u] as a boy’s nn.

[name_f]Polly[/name_f] is all girl to me, however I know of a few [name_m]Pauly[/name_m]'s which basically sounds the same…

I agree with the majority.

I do like it as a nickname for [name_m]Apollo[/name_m], but the thought wouldn’t even cross my mind if I saw it written down that a [name_f]Polly[/name_f] could be male.

When I see [name_f]Polly[/name_f] written down I do think of a girl, especially because growing up I used to play with these [name_f]Polly[/name_f] pocket dolls… But when pronouced, it actually reminds me of [name_m]Pauli[/name_m] and it doesn’t that weird for a boy…

I would assume [name_f]Polly[/name_f] would be a girl. Maybe because I played with [name_f]Polly[/name_f] Pockets when I was little. I like [name_m]Apollo[/name_m], and I think [name_m]Apollo[/name_m] would be cute as a nickname for when he’s little, but I can’t imagine an older [name_m]Apollo[/name_m] wanting to be called [name_f]Polly[/name_f] (Especially since [name_m]Apollo[/name_m] is a cool name!)

I have a brother [name_m]Paul[/name_m] who will always be [name_m]Paulie[/name_m] to me. I don’t think [name_f]Polly[/name_f] is so different. Seeing it spelled out looks like a girl’s name, but you usually hear nicknames more often than see them. And I would assume boy if I just heard it.

I would automatically see [name_f]Polly[/name_f] as feminine because, in terms of its history and etymology, that is what it is. However, I don’t see any problem with it being used on a boy. After all, girls are being given die-hard boy names nowadyas so, why not do the vice versa? Not only that but, [name_f]Polly[/name_f] is rather close to [name_m]Paulie[/name_m], so the gender-switch seems reasonable, especially when you throw [name_m]Apollo[/name_m] into the mix.

Not to mention, how many Pollys do any of us know? To my knowledge, it’s right up that with [name_f]Betsy[/name_f], [name_u]Patsy[/name_u], [name_f]Dolly[/name_f] and [name_f]Mindy[/name_f]. Most people currently find them crusty and unusable, so I don’t think a male [name_f]Polly[/name_f] is going to run into any female namesakes for quite some time - unless they’re over fifty.

Overall, I say go for it. Whether it be a nickname for [name_m]Apollo[/name_m] or a stand-alone choice, I wholeheartedly believe that it is usable.
