What's a name you WISH you liked but just don't?

We all love names here. What are names you see the appeal of, like the look or sound of, but just can’t get on board with? Names you’d put on your list because they match your flow, style, etc but you can’t bring yourself to choose?

For me, it’s [name_u]Elliott[/name_u] and [name_m]Felix[/name_m] for boys and [name_f]Stella[/name_f] for girls (off the top of my head, I might see more)

[name_f]Audrey[/name_f]! It could be because of the lack of nicknames.

[name_m]Jasper[/name_m] - I do like it but I wish I liked it more than [name_m]Casper[/name_m]. The ‘J’ somehow makes the name more socially acceptable. So many seem to have a problem with [name_m]Casper[/name_m]!

[name_u]Eloise[/name_u] - I like this too and it’s one of my fiance’s faves. It’s a bit too fancy for me and I really just prefer [name_f]Louise[/name_f].

[name_f]Maeve[/name_f]

Looks so pretty but I just don’t like the way it sounds when I say it.

[name_m]Simon[/name_m]- it’s a classic, familiar but not too common name, and not trendy either; [name_m]Simon[/name_m] fits my criteria perfectly, but I just don’t love the sound of it.

Would make my life easier if I could like the following names (I’m a bit picky):
[name_f]Irene[/name_f], [name_f]Juno[/name_f], [name_f]Iris[/name_f]- I love other goddess names, I’m just not fond of those ones! Though, I do like [name_f]Irene[/name_f] as a middle name sometimes. I also much prefer [name_f]Isis[/name_f] to [name_f]Iris[/name_f], but unfortunately… Yeah.
[name_f]Diane[/name_f]- [name_u]LOVE[/name_u] [name_f]Diana[/name_f], but [name_f]Diane[/name_f] is the same as [name_f]Irene[/name_f]
[name_u]Eloise[/name_u]- Same reason as @cactusgram
[name_f]Clara[/name_f]- Looks pretty, but…
[name_f]Amelia[/name_f], [name_f]Emilia[/name_f], [name_f]Maeve[/name_f], [name_f]Maeva[/name_f]- I’m just don’t like them
[name_f]Imogen[/name_f], [name_f]Seraphina[/name_f], [name_f]Jocelyn[/name_f]- I love [name_f]Imogene[/name_f], [name_f]Serafina[/name_f], and [name_f]Josslyn[/name_f], but these spellings I really dislike
[name_f]Alexandra[/name_f]/[name_f]Alexandria[/name_f]- [name_u]Love[/name_u] [name_u]Alex[/name_u], hate these
[name_f]Ciel[/name_f]- This name is wonderful on a boy, not so much a girl
[name_f]Ophelia[/name_f], [name_f]Genevieve[/name_f], [name_f]Guinevere[/name_f]- Would love to love them
[name_f]Viola[/name_f]- It’s nice, but…
[name_f]Rose[/name_f] and [name_f]Marie[/name_f] as first names
[name_f]Josephine[/name_f]- It’s a nice name, I guess, Very much dislike it though

Boys -

[name_m]Joshua[/name_m], [name_m]Henry[/name_m], [name_u]Ryan[/name_u], [name_m]Derek[/name_m], [name_m]Drake[/name_m], [name_m]Aleksandr[/name_m]/[name_m]Alexander[/name_m]- I actually like them, but not enough that I love them
[name_u]Alex[/name_u], [name_u]Cameron[/name_u], [name_u]Addison[/name_u], [name_u]Tyler[/name_u], [name_u]Tyson[/name_u], [name_u]Carter[/name_u], [name_u]Carson[/name_u], [name_m]Masen[/name_m], [name_u]Mason[/name_u]- I love these on girls, but not so much on boys
[name_u]Artemis[/name_u], [name_m]Artemas[/name_m], [name_m]Artemus[/name_m]- Biggest pet peeve. HATE seeing [name_u]Artemis[/name_u] and very much dislike seeing [name_m]Artemas[/name_m] or [name_m]Artemus[/name_m] on a boy.
[name_m]Nicolas[/name_m]- It’s nice, but no
[name_m]Ludwig[/name_m], Kiku, [name_m]Feliciano[/name_m]- [name_u]Haven[/name_u]'t warmed up to any of these name yet, very much wish I could~
[name_m]Axel[/name_m]- Looks cool, but it’s always felt like a “bad guy character” name to me
[name_m]Frank[/name_m]- [name_u]Haven[/name_u]'t wormed up to this either
[name_m]William[/name_m]- [name_u]Love[/name_u] [name_m]Will[/name_m], hate this name
[name_u]Claude[/name_u]- I want to love it, but I can’t!

Also, [name_u]Alfie[/name_u], [name_u]Freddie[/name_u], [name_m]Fred[/name_m], [name_m]Artie[/name_m], [name_u]Gilly[/name_u], Vino, [name_u]Bertie[/name_u] for nn’s for the names on my sig. They are obvious nn’s but I dislike all of them very much.

[name_f]Nina[/name_f] and [name_f]Lena[/name_f] - they both look and sound so pretty, girly, without any added frills, just nice, simple names. Unfortunately I’ve had some very bad experiences with some [name_f]Nina[/name_f]'s and [name_f]Lena[/name_f]'s. So that’s something I’ll just never get over.

But oh well, these names are far too popular for my taste anyway, so I guess it really doesn’t matter.
Although they could be really nice nn’s. - [name_m]Just[/name_m] not for my future daughters.

I love [name_f]Maeve[/name_f], but our last name starts with a V, so it just souds weird, and I do not like [name_f]Maeva[/name_f], which is such a shame

[name_m]Simon[/name_m]
[name_f]Stella[/name_f]
[name_f]Ophelia[/name_f]
[name_f]Aurelia[/name_f]
[name_m]Leonard[/name_m]

[name_f]Iris[/name_f], [name_f]Ophelia[/name_f], [name_f]Hazel[/name_f], and [name_f]Natalie[/name_f] for girls, and [name_m]Felix[/name_m], [name_m]Milo[/name_m], [name_m]Simon[/name_m], [name_m]Nathaniel[/name_m], [name_m]Anthony[/name_m], and [name_m]Jonathan[/name_m] for boys.

[name_f]Amelia[/name_f] - it’s loved by so many, but I cannot get on board with it, because of it’s medical meaning. I blame my mom (a physician) for ruining the name for me, as she’s the one who told me about its use as medical terminology!

[name_f]Aurora[/name_f]. I don’t know what it is (maybe my accent), but it just sounds like I’m mumbling when I say it. I want to like it but, for that reason, I just can’t.

[name_f]Afton[/name_f] - I love the idea of this name…it’s unisex and strong. But there was this high school bully named [name_f]Afton[/name_f] whose parents ruined it for me ;).

[name_f]Hazel[/name_f] - I liked this name, especially for a cat, until “The Fault With Our Stars” came out. Now I can’t stand it because I hate the book (no offense if you like it).

[name_f]Isabella[/name_f]/[name_f]Bella[/name_f] and [name_m]Edward[/name_m] are in the same category… too popular and associated with a bad series. Otherwise, they’d be on my list because I love those names in their own right.

[name_f]Sophia[/name_f] - It just makes me think ‘spoiled’ and ‘snotty’.
[name_u]Madison[/name_u] - I hate boy names on girls, and this is probably the most common one I see.
[name_u]James[/name_u] - I don’t find its look or sound offensive, but it’s been used so excessively over the last few years that I get frustrated by it because I see and hear it so many times, every day.

[name_f]Amelia[/name_f]- I don’t see the appeal of the “eel” sound. I want to like this but I can’t
[name_f]Aurelia[/name_f]- Same as [name_f]Amelia[/name_f]. I see this as substitutes for [name_f]Aurora[/name_f] but I just don’t like it as much
[name_f]Isabelle[/name_f]- Not sure why I don’t like this, I just don’t
[name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f]- Everyone likes this… I just find it so terribly overused.
[name_f]Esther[/name_f]- I love the nickname [name_f]Essie[/name_f] but I despise [name_f]Esther[/name_f]
[name_m]Milo[/name_m]- I want to like this, but I only think of the God-awful Disney show [name_m]Fish[/name_m] Hooks
[name_f]Dorothy[/name_f]- Maybe it’s because I live in Kansas, but I just can’t see this working on an actual human. But I love [name_f]Dot[/name_f]!

A lot of popular names I don’t understand… [name_u]Madison[/name_u], [name_f]Madeline[/name_f], [name_m]Jacob[/name_m], [name_u]Michael[/name_u]

[name_f]Agnes[/name_f] - I just don’t like this one it’s sad because I love the [name_m]French[/name_m] version which is sounds more like “on yes” than “ag ness.” I just don’t think the English version sounds pretty, it makes me think of gag.

Names like [name_m]Caden[/name_m], [name_u]Jaden[/name_u], [name_u]Aiden[/name_u] etc. - I don’t know why I just can’t like these names. Not to mention the billion ways they can be spelt, no kid should have to deal with that. They do sound nice though.

Keep trying to like [name_m]Matthias[/name_m] but don’t. I should though I like [name_m]Tobias[/name_m] a lot. Too much [name_m]Matt[/name_m].

Wish I liked [name_m]Conrad[/name_m]. It’s a Ck name which I usually love. It’s Irish. It’s familiar but uncommon. [name_m]Just[/name_m] can’t warm up to it

[name_f]Margot[/name_f]/[name_f]Margo[/name_f]/[name_f]Margaux[/name_f]: For some reason, I just can’t seem to like any variation of this name! I do like [name_f]Margaret[/name_f] a lot, but I can’t stand [name_f]Margot[/name_f]/[name_f]Margo[/name_f]/[name_f]Margaux[/name_f].

“[name_u]Alex[/name_u]” names: I love [name_f]Alexandria[/name_f], nicknamed [name_u]Alex[/name_u], but I can’t seem to get behind any other “[name_u]Alex[/name_u]” girls’ names. Sadly, I just don’t like [name_f]Alexandra[/name_f], [name_f]Alexa[/name_f], [name_u]Alexis[/name_u], [name_f]Alexandrine[/name_f], or their spellings.

I wish I liked these names, but I just can’t seem to do it!

The name [name_f]Madeline[/name_f], with the pronunciation mad-ə-lin, really appeals to me on a lot of levels. But at the same time when I hear it, it rings of vaguely dated “office lady” names like [name_f]Carolyn[/name_f], [name_u]Allison[/name_u], [name_f]Marilyn[/name_f]. I hope I stop hearing it that way.

I love [name_f]Imogen[/name_f], and I wish I liked the non-printing-error version [name_f]Innogen[/name_f] at least as much.

I also recognise that the more established spelling of [name_m]Isadore[/name_m]/[name_f]Isadora[/name_f] is [name_m]Isidore[/name_m]/[name_f]Isidora[/name_f], and that spelling makes sense, but it’s just not as charming. I wish it worked for me.

I think [name_f]Rhoda[/name_f] has all the elements of a beautiful name, and yet I can’t put my finger on why it doesn’t come together for me. I really really like it and I wish I loved it.

[name_u]Marion[/name_u] is a charming boy’s name, and a rarely respectable example of a masculine name with feminine roots. So I’d like to be just a little more fond of it, personally.

[name_f]Phoebe[/name_f] has lots of elements that I really love, but I have mixed feelings about how it looks written down. And I realised (of all things, by watching people vote on Survivor) that it really irks me how much trouble people have spelling it.

And I kind of wish I saw what people see in [name_m]Jasper[/name_m], if only to not feel like an outsider on that one. I just think it’s kind of blandly awkward. (I can’t say the same for popular names I fully detest like [name_m]Silas[/name_m] or [name_m]Declan[/name_m], though.)

[name_m]Oliver[/name_m] and [name_f]Maeve[/name_f] are the big two I can think of right now. I’d probably add [name_f]Alice[/name_f], [name_f]Beatrice[/name_f], [name_m]Eli[/name_m], [name_m]Jasper[/name_m], [name_f]Clementine[/name_f], [name_f]Ada[/name_f], and [name_f]Lucy[/name_f] to that list, as well. But especially [name_m]Oliver[/name_m]–it seems like it should be right up my alley, and it’s my great-grandfather’s MN, so I’d love to use it as an honor name, but I just don’t like it. I’m just glad to be coming around to his fn, [name_u]James[/name_u].
