It’s hard for me to believe that people are hating on [name_u]Piper[/name_u] for being trendy, yet pushing [name_f]Penelope[/name_f] and [name_f]Pippa[/name_f]…to me, the latter two names are SO much more trendy than the former (thanks to the Kardashians and [name_f]Pippa[/name_f] Middleton).
I personally love the name [name_u]Piper[/name_u] - if that’s the name you and your DH love, forget the haters. There’s absolutely nothing wrong with the name, and personally, I think it’s a much better name than some others that I’ve heard, both on this board and in my own experience.
Names are all about personal preference. If you and your husband like it, who cares what anyone else thinks? People hate all over my girls names on here (Because they all fall under the unisex and surname category), but I like them and that’s all that matters.
For the record, I like [name_u]Piper[/name_u]. I find it to be spunky and cute. [name_f]Penelope[/name_f] has grown on me but I do not like [name_f]Pippa[/name_f]. Good [name_m]Luck[/name_m]!
I started the “[name_f]Honesty[/name_f] about [name_u]Piper[/name_u]” thread and I was also shocked at how many people said they hated it! It’s not my favorite name either, but gosh there are some serious [name_u]Piper[/name_u] haters out there!
Some people brought up in that thread how [name_u]Piper[/name_u] has “pipe” in it and they are not smokers, so they wouldn’t use the name. I thought this was kind of funny. I’m not a smoker either, and I wouldn’t use [name_u]Piper[/name_u] for a name even if I was! I just thought it was cute and spunky.
Yeah, after that thread, I will probably stop asking other people for opinions on names I like. Some people were not so nice on that thread.
[name_m]Long[/name_m] story short, if you like it, use it. While I probably won’t use it, I like the attitude and spunkiness behind [name_u]Piper[/name_u], and I actually prefer it over [name_f]Penelope[/name_f]. And I think it would age well too. We had a man running for president named [name_m]Mitt[/name_m], why couldn’t we have a Senator [name_u]Piper[/name_u] or something???
I wouldn’t worry. It’s like talking about your favorite band with a bunch of music fans/snobs. Opinions seem really vehement and you discuss all the angles and nuances of a song or a band, and people may end up trashing it… but in reality it’s really not a big deal, and you shouldn’t stop liking your favorite band because of it. And making a thread about a specific name just concentrates the opinions that much more, so it seems like “Wha…why all the hate?”
I’m not saying no one should criticize a name choice–sometimes things need to be pointed out to the poster about sound, teasability, meaning, etc. But if it’s a personal style thing, or if someone brings up a concern that doesn’t bother you, then stick with your choice.
[name_f]Every[/name_f] [name_u]Piper[/name_u] who I’ve met in real life had a parent who was a stoner. So that is what I tend to think of. ( Have probably met about 3 all girls) It also doesn’t run toward my taste in names. I dislike [name_u]Harper[/name_u], [name_u]Hunter[/name_u], Sniper, etc.
Any time some one asks for an honest opinion on a site dedicated to names you are going to get people who dislike a name and can tell you why.
That said there are a lot of perfectly pleasant points to [name_u]Piper[/name_u]! [name_u]Piper[/name_u] bring to mind the 12 days of [name_u]Christmas[/name_u] and all the fun and opulence of that song. Sand Pipers are adorable and graceful coastal birds. Etc.
If you and your husband love the name and you feel like your daughter is a [name_u]Piper[/name_u] than that’s what you should name her!
I think it’s a dangerous thing to ask a bunch of anonymous people for their honest opinions, which implies that you can handle any criticism they might have. I find that when I post lists or names, people are pretty gentle & construction with their opinions, but when I say, “honest opinions please, don’t hold back, feel free to criticize” you do get it a bit harder. I might hesitate to open up a thread with honest opinions of my very favorite names.
I would not lump [name_u]Harper[/name_u] and [name_u]Piper[/name_u] along the lines of Sniper, or [name_u]Hunter[/name_u] for that matter. Sniper is something all together different.
It’s okay if somebody doesn’t like [name_u]Piper[/name_u], everyone has different tastes If you both love it, then use it. In my opinion, [name_u]Piper[/name_u] is not the best name in the world, but someone can think that it actually is Good luck.
People were being honest as they were asked to do. I answered honestly, that I really dislike [name_u]Piper[/name_u]. It just doesn’t have any positive qualities in my book. However, if you love it, then you should use it. I am sure that you wouldn’t like my name choices. Different strokes for different folks. I like [name_f]Daisy[/name_f] best from your list. Good [name_m]Luck[/name_m]!
[name_m]Just[/name_m] ignore it. People will give their brutally honest opinions if the OP asks for them. [name_m]Just[/name_m] because other people dislike the name cannot stop you from using it.
[name_u]Piper[/name_u] isn’t a typical berry name but I don’t think many, if any, hate the name. If someone here asked me to choose between [name_f]Pippa[/name_f] and [name_u]Piper[/name_u], I’d choose [name_f]Pippa[/name_f]. If the choices were [name_u]Piper[/name_u] and Izzabelluh, I’d definitely choose [name_u]Piper[/name_u].
Personally, [name_u]Piper[/name_u] feels unisex and I’m just not a fan of -er names on girls. No, I haven’t met any men named [name_u]Piper[/name_u] but since it’s an occupational surname that ends in -er, it gives off a unisex vibe. [name_u]Piper[/name_u] doesn’t feel feminine to me. I’m not saying girls names have to be frilly but I personally prefer a girls name that will fit any girl, not only a tomboy or girly-girl or whatever (and I feel [name_u]Piper[/name_u] would be a tomboy). I hope that makes sense!
I like [name_u]Piper[/name_u] actually. I think of a spunky, sassy, sweet, tomboy girl with this name. I don’t find it unisex at all, I think of the actress from Coyote Ugly. Some names Berries like are really a hit or miss with me. [name_f]Love[/name_f] [name_f]Beatrice[/name_f]. Dislike [name_f]Bridget[/name_f]. See? Only your opinion matters. Good luck!
I like [name_u]Piper[/name_u], always have, always will. Where [name_f]Pippa[/name_f] is very nickname/[name_f]Pippi[/name_f] Longstocking-y to, [name_u]Piper[/name_u] is sweet, independant and [name_u]Piper[/name_u] Halliwell-y (my favourite Halliwell sister). There will always be people who dislike the names you like - the dislike for [name_u]Piper[/name_u] doesn’t reach the dislike shown for [name_f]Olga[/name_f] at all, but that doesn’t stop me from adoring [name_f]Olga[/name_f].
I second this very sensible comment. People will usually publish their less-censored opinions on threads that are callouts for such. Some of those opinions will be rave reviews, while some of those opinions will be quite negative. The useful thing to learn is that there are, out in the world somewhere, people who hate a name with every bit as much ardor as you love it. They just probably won’t tell you unless it’s anonymously online. If it bothers you to know that some people hate your name, then you should probably pick one that gets more general approval. But, just about every name comes with its own fan club and opposition group! And even if lots of people dislike the name you love, there’s probably a fan club out there too.
I’ve never heard of many people hating the name [name_u]Piper[/name_u], I love this name! If I were you I would just use [name_u]Piper[/name_u] since it is a name you agreed on with your husband. There is always at least one person who doesn’t like a certain name, so I would just ignore them because its your baby not theirs.
