I was just reading the forum “[name_f]Honesty[/name_f] about [name_u]Piper[/name_u]” Honesty about Piper, and I can’t believe how many people hate/dislike/have something bad to say about it. I am due in less than 3 weeks, and that is the name we have finally agreed on if this is a girl. So what’s the deal? Is it really that bad? Still trying to pick a middle name. Our last name has 3-syllables and sounds just like [name_m]Anderson[/name_m].
Is [name_f]Penelope[/name_f] better? I like that, but I feel like I’d need more nerve to name my daughter [name_f]Penelope[/name_f] than [name_u]Piper[/name_u]. I don’t like [name_u]Penny[/name_u], and, oh yeah, my husband doesn’t like [name_f]Penelope[/name_f]. I like the way [name_u]Piper[/name_u] sounds way more than [name_f]Pippa[/name_f]. I love [name_f]Olive[/name_f] and [name_f]Daisy[/name_f], too, but hubby doesn’t. After that, I’m all out. What to do?
I love [name_u]Piper[/name_u]! If you guys both love it don’t even worry about it. I know an adorable little blond girl named [name_u]Piper[/name_u], and she is very smart and polite. Nothing wrong with [name_u]Piper[/name_u] in my opinion. Congratulations!
I’ve never met anyone named [name_u]Piper[/name_u]. It’s a cute enough name, I just think berries think of it being the cutesy name of late. It may also be associated with [name_u]Piper[/name_u] & [name_f]Sarah[/name_f] [name_u]Palin[/name_u] and the pied piper legend.
Overall it fits well with your other kids’ names and if you two can agree on it and love it, there isn’t any reason you shouldn’t use it.
Erm, I’m honestly not sure? I mean, it’s not [name_f]Beatrice[/name_f], but not everyone has to like [name_f]Beatrice[/name_f], haha (honestly, I hate [name_f]Beatrice[/name_f], lol). It’s a bit surnamey, a bit trendy, and a lot of Nameberries are put off by that. They want [name_f]Penelope[/name_f] instead of [name_u]Piper[/name_u]; [name_f]Harriet[/name_f] instead of [name_u]Harper[/name_u]. But there’s merit to [name_u]Piper[/name_u] and [name_u]Harper[/name_u], too. I think [name_u]Piper[/name_u]'s sweet–I like the friendly, peppy vibe to her, and the sweet nn of [name_f]Pippa[/name_f]. I think it works well with your other kiddos, too. I think [name_f]Penelope[/name_f] nn [name_u]Piper[/name_u]'s pretty cute, but if hubby won’t get into [name_f]Penelope[/name_f], I think just [name_u]Piper[/name_u] is fine. Besides, [name_f]Katelyn[/name_f], [name_f]Zoe[/name_f], and [name_u]Piper[/name_u] work great for sisters.
A lot of Berries try to talk me out of my top choice for a girl ([name_f]Isabelle[/name_f]!) too. We all have different tastes; we don’t all need to have that “[name_u]Berry[/name_u]” style. Sometimes we love [name_u]Berry[/name_u] favorites; sometimes we don’t. As long as there’s nothing glaringly awful, I wouldn’t be too fussed about it.
[name_m]Don[/name_m]'t feel bad I read negative things all the time about my children’s names on this site. Sometimes I get offended but everyone is always going to have a different opinion. You also need to take into consideration the age, location and other factors of people writing this mean stuff.
I have no idea why people don’t like this name. I see absolutely nothing wrong with it, and in fact I think the pied piper thing gives it more cred. There’s also [name_u]Piper[/name_u] Perabo, who is an amazing and beautiful actress. Maybe it doesn’t suit someone’s personal taste, but that’s too bad for them.
I don’t think most people hate [name_u]Piper[/name_u], I think that they just think there are better names out there. Personally, I do prefer both [name_f]Penelope[/name_f] and [name_f]Pippa[/name_f] to [name_u]Piper[/name_u]. I don’t hate it I just prefer other names. [name_u]Piper[/name_u] to me seems like it won’t age well and even though I’ve never seen it used for a boy it feels unisex and not all that feminine. I guess those are my objections to it. However, it is your child and if you love it you should use it. Someone will always dislike your choice, both my mother and mil really didn’t like [name_f]Freya[/name_f], but I went with it anyway because I loved it. So if it is the right name for you then don’t listen to everyone else just go with your instinct. Best wishes!
Well I love [name_u]Piper[/name_u]. It’s sweet and pretty and makes me think of music, like the sound of a little girl singing. It’s very pretty. I know the sweetest little girl with this name.
And honestly, if you and your husband love it, it shouldn’t matter what a bunch of strangers on the internet think.
Honestly, my taste in names is different from most berries out there though I am still not a fan of [name_u]Piper[/name_u].
It’s not that bad because it is such a common name that at this point I have grown accustomed to it. My main reason for disliking [name_u]Piper[/name_u] above all the other occupational names is quite simply because I envision an old man smoking a pipe when I hear this name. [name_u]Piper[/name_u] just sound like an old man smoking nicotine (or otherwise) in a pipe.
I know this is not the technical meaning of this name, but it still contains the word pipe.
I only answered this honestly because you asked, but the nameberry community may be only a partial representation of the outside world and opinions on this name. Plus not everyone has the same taste in names that you do; I get alot of negative feedback for the names I like which is fine with me. I just try to see which name have the least naysay and what the reasons are behind the dislike.
I however would still use the name as it is common enough to override any association I have with it.
I stated I had a love/hate relationship with the name. I love [name_u]Piper[/name_u] (it’s spunky, musical, fun) but there is also that suggestion of a pipe smoker, that makes me take pause. [name_u]Hunter[/name_u] is the same for me. I love the name, love the color, but not a fan of hunting.
I like Pipet and know of a little girl named [name_u]Piper[/name_u] [name_f]Lily[/name_f] which is a very sweet name, amd isn’t [name_m]Pip[/name_m]/ [name_f]Pippa[/name_f] a great nn?
Well I like [name_u]Piper[/name_u] and I’ve always liked [name_u]Piper[/name_u]. So there! It was on my list but my husband said no (he just likes other names better).
Other names like [name_u]Piper[/name_u] (occupations names and names like [name_u]Harper[/name_u] etc) I really dislike and there are so many reasons why I should dislike [name_u]Piper[/name_u] too. It sounds quite masculine and it has bad associations as people have mentioned such as smoking a pipe, but I still love this name! The meaning ‘pipe or flute player’ is quite cute (maybe she’ll grow up to be musical?) and I just love the sound (Oh, and I love Charmed). If you and your husband love the name, then that’s all that matters.
It sounds to me like you’ve put a lot of thought into your name search, and you’ve come up with a name both you and your husband love. And I think that’s all that matters.
The only time I recommend against using a name that you love is if it will cause some sort of burden to the child, whether it having to be constantly spelling or pronouncing their name or correcting their gender. When it comes to opinions, people are always going to have them, and I think you just can’t worry about that.
I absolutely [name_f]LOVE[/name_f] the name [name_u]Piper[/name_u] for what it’s worth. [name_u]Piper[/name_u] seems to me like an adorable, spunky little girl. She’s very intelligent and witty and always smiling. She loves to wear dresses, but also climb trees and run around outside.
[name_m]Don[/name_m]'t second guess yourself. If you love the name, use it.
[name_m]Don[/name_m]'t worry about all the negatives…people are going to say some stupid comment no matter what. If you love the name then keep it for sure. I love the name [name_u]Piper[/name_u] wayyy more than [name_f]Pippa[/name_f] and [name_f]Penelope[/name_f] is so popular these days. It seems complete to me whereas [name_f]Pippa[/name_f] sounds like a nickname to me, and I don’t really like [name_u]Penny[/name_u] either When it comes down to it, it’s going to be your child so it is up to you to choose the name. [name_u]Piper[/name_u] is cute and would suit either a baby or an adult. Nothing bad about it in my opinion! Go for it!
When I first started coming on this site, I was relieved to see most Berries were a little bit of a “name snob” like I consider myself to be (not proudly - I wish I didn’t care so much!). I am totally judgmental when it comes to what people name their children and I HATE all the trendy stuff out there like the -aden and -lyn names, peppering y’s in names and most unisex names.
As I’ve been on here more, I do notice SOME people can be a bit extreme with their name choices and judgments. They like obscure, 2 middle name almost with a Shakespearean feel. Not my cup of tea. I do like [name_f]Beatrice[/name_f], [name_f]Penelope[/name_f], [name_f]Eloise[/name_f], [name_u]Ruby[/name_u], etc. Those are more my style. My daughter’s name is [name_f]Nora[/name_f]. HOWEVER, I really like [name_u]Piper[/name_u]. And [name_u]Harper[/name_u], for that matter. While I guess they’re technically unisex, I’ve never known either of them used on a boy - ever. While I do think they’re trendy now, I don’t think they’re in a bad way like say… [name_f]Kylee[/name_f], [name_f]Braylyn[/name_f], [name_u]Kayden[/name_u], etc. I think they have spunk and for some reason, give me somewhat of a classic vibe like [name_f]Daisy[/name_f] and [name_f]Olive[/name_f].
To be honest, I even considered using [name_u]Piper[/name_u] for my daughter but no one in my family (including my husband) were on board. I would still consider it in the future if I ever have another daughter. I think the middle name really seals the deal for the vibe you want to give off with [name_u]Piper[/name_u]. For instance, if you go with something like [name_u]Piper[/name_u] [name_f]Josephine[/name_f] or [name_u]Piper[/name_u] [name_u]Vivian[/name_u] - it’s more classic and spunky. If you go with something like [name_u]Piper[/name_u] [name_u]Brooklyn[/name_u] or [name_u]Piper[/name_u] [name_f]Miley[/name_f], then you’re giving off that trendy vibe.
As for [name_f]Penelope[/name_f] - I do really love it and I hate [name_u]Penny[/name_u], too. I prefer the nicknames [name_f]Nell[/name_f] or [name_u]Nelly[/name_u]… I’ve also heard [name_f]Poppy[/name_f] used, which I absolutely love.
Good luck and if you love [name_u]Piper[/name_u], I say go for it!
You both love it so go for it! I must admit, I am one of the [name_u]Piper[/name_u] ‘haters’. I don’t really hate the name, but someone asked for an honest opinion so I let the criticism part out, but I have plenty of positive things to say about [name_u]Piper[/name_u] as well: It’s familiar and while it has a unisex/surname vibe, it is decidedly feminine.
I think the important thing to think about is that none of the criticism of [name_u]Piper[/name_u] pointed out any real un-usability, it just pointed out that some people on an internet forum don’t adore the name. If the thread revealed to you that [name_u]Piper[/name_u] was the name of an evil dictator, or that it was an obscure racial slur, or it meant something awful in another language…well that would be a whole other thing. But it merely revealed that it isn’t a [name_u]Berry[/name_u] favorite. In your real life [name_u]Piper[/name_u] might charm people much more than [name_f]Penelope[/name_f]. Personally I like [name_f]Penelope[/name_f] much more. But what really matters is what you & your partner prefer!
I’ve worked with kids a lot and have met probably 30 [name_u]Piper[/name_u]'s over the last 5 years. [name_m]Just[/name_m] crazy how it blew up where I live. 5 of those were boys. I also am a phish band fan and “piper” is a phish song so some were probably influenced by that. If it works for you, awesome! I personally don’t like how harsh and masculine it sounds (even though I know primarily girls with the name). To each their own mama, what works for you doesn’t work for all and that’s one of the reasons life is wonderful
I’m neutral here. I like [name_u]Piper[/name_u] because it’s a spunky, sweet name, and is a great character in a novel I read. I dislike it because… Well, I actually don’t. It’s just not my style. It makes me think about pipe+pepper. Only that. If you love it, I say go for it.
