There’s nothing wrong with [name_f]Flora[/name_f]! I can’t even imagine how someone could dislike it! It means flower, and flowers are beautiful. I suppose it’s a bit old-fashioned, but that’s very on-trend right now. I’m not familiar with the brand of margarine, but still, I don’t think that would turn me off from it. If a common name, like [name_m]Michael[/name_m] or [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f] or something, became associated with a type of food, I don’t think that would make people feel differently about it or stop using it.
I love [name_f]Flora[/name_f].
My first accociation is flora [name_m]McDonald[/name_m].
Unfortunately my second is the margarine. But I would still use it, DH however would not.
I love [name_f]Flora[/name_f]. It’s classy, frilly, sweet and soft and ties into the flower name trend while still being unique. You can almost guarantee that you and your daughter might never meet another [name_f]Flora[/name_f] (but I say might because it could take just one celebrity baby to turn [name_f]Flora[/name_f]'s popularity around in a snap). I know the sleeping beauty and margarine references may bother some but it’s not that big of a deal really. There are worse associations. Overall, I’m surprised (and saddened) that there aren’t more parents naming their daughters [name_f]Flora[/name_f].
As for what people are telling you about using it for your daughter…that’s just rude. I would ignore them. It’s your baby, and if it feels like it is the right name then don’t listen to others and go with what you love and feels right. Many people tell me that my taste in names will ‘get my kid beat up’ or ‘sounds like a hippy’ or will make me look like a psycho. If I am feeling nice that day what I say to them is this “I understand if you don’t like my choice in names, that’s fine, whatever. But that’s just one opinion. I happen to think it’s a nice name and I don’t see how giving my child a certain name will ‘ruin their life’. So thank you for your input but I think I will stick to whatever I choose is right for my child.” But that is only if I am in a good mood and the person is not intentially trying to be mean about it…or if I ASK for their opinion. If someone just comes up to me and says " your name choice sounds like the name of a fat lady" then I would be more like “That’s a really nice way to stereotype people. No wonder so many people in our society has self esteem and body issues. Thanks for further lessening my faith in humanity”. They are pretty speechless after that haha.
Bottom line: [name_f]Flora[/name_f] is beautiful and just ignore the rude people. Everyone has an opinion and although sometimes that kind of feedback can be good (if it truly is a horrible name for example), sometimes you got to know when to just tune it out.
I love [name_f]Flora[/name_f]! I don’t understand why anyone would say anything so rude! I think it’s gorgeous! [name_m]Just[/name_m] ignore them, [name_f]Flora[/name_f] is a wonderful name.
You got my children’s names right =)
Funny you should say it sounds Nordic - I am Scandinavian
My partner is British, but I’m Absolutely 100% Danish and it’s very important to me that the names we choose can be pronounced, sound kinda similar and is used in Denmark, which [name_f]Flora[/name_f] is (and gaining popularity too).
I can see the overwhelming majority here have quite a positive take on [name_f]Flora[/name_f] and I’m very happy to see that! I know the people around me don’t particularly share my name taste. They do tend to be more “top - 10”, which there is nothing wrong with - I think most of the names in top 10 are perfectly lovely, but it does mean there is a slight difference in opinion when it comes to names.
I do absolutely love [name_f]Flora[/name_f] and at the moment I get that warm fuzzy feeling inside that just tells me this name is right for a girl! So I’m really glad most of you think its a perfectly usable and lovely name!
Another vote for gorgeous. It is so, so cute with your other children’s names.
Honestly I think it’s just undiscovered right now. It’s the same generation as [name_f]Rose[/name_f], [name_f]Emma[/name_f], [name_f]Sophia[/name_f], etc., and it has a similar simplicity and vibe. Perhaps it’s still in the cold because of this mysterious fat connection (which I’ve never heard of before, and I agree is dumb). Or could it be that it’s a “vague” flower name, so people don’t have any immediate imagery to override the knee-jerk grandma reaction? It could even be pure coincidence…
In short, I don’t know why no celebrities have used it, but I think people are harsh just because you’re among the first to catch on to a really good thing.
I bet when people meet a smiling little [name_f]Flora[/name_f] (chubby or not!!) they will start to [name_f]LOVE[/name_f] the name.
[name_f]Edit[/name_f] to add: as a biology student, I looove the gut flora connection. I had never thought of that before.
[name_f]May[/name_f] even suggest it as a girl baby name to my brother, a microbiology PhD candidate.
[name_f]Flora[/name_f] is quaint, and that’s not bad thing. It’s a nice name, but I do prefer [name_f]Florence[/name_f] or [name_f]Florentina[/name_f] with a nickname of [name_f]Flora[/name_f].
I’m biased, because I named my daughter [name_f]Flora[/name_f].
And I think it’s such a beautiful name, but I was also worried about certain connotations - the margarine (“spreads easily” - uugh), even though that brand is not popular where I live, or the bacterial flora. For [name_f]Flora[/name_f]'s father, the main argument against choosing this name was that “flora” means vegetation (as someone here has also pointed out). I can see that this might turn someone off; I can’t quite shake it off myself…
Nevertheless, this name, in combination with a mn picked by Flora’s father, just felt so right to me that we ultimately went with it. Our [name_f]Flora[/name_f] was born on a beautiful morning this spring and the name ([name_m]Roman[/name_m] goddess of flowers and spring) fit perfectly for that reason alone. (If I’m not mistaken, you’re expecting a springtime baby also?) And to my great surprise, as I really was prepared to defend our choice, nearly everyone around here, old or young (not so much the 45-year-olds though, funnily), likes the name. Of course, our little girl is not in kindergarten/school yet… (but children who want to tease will find a reason to, whatever the name).
Someone here wrote a while back that “[name_f]Flora[/name_f] is the ultimate namenerd’s name”. And I think it is. The vintage charm, et cetera. There’re several characters named [name_f]Flora[/name_f] in certain books I love (by [name_f]Siri[/name_f] Hustvedt, for instance), I’ve heard of others girls with the name, but I’ve only met one (eighteen-year-old) [name_f]Flora[/name_f] so far. Have you? I expect that this beautiful name will gain more popularity in the years to come. But maybe I’ve just visited nameberry.com too often ![]()
We are expecting a spring baby - due in [name_u]March[/name_u]! And yes there is the [name_m]Roman[/name_m] [name_f]Goddess[/name_f] connotation - funnily enough, my own name is the name of the Norse [name_f]Goddess[/name_f] for [name_f]Spring[/name_f] ([name_f]Freya[/name_f]) so that’s a bit of a funny coincidence.
I’ve actually never met anyone called [name_f]Flora[/name_f], but I have seen an increasing amount of [name_f]Flora[/name_f]'s in the times baby announcements and in Denmark its increased a lot in popularity.
I believe the “Spreads easily” add was many years a go too, wasn’t it? I doubt any children of my childs generation will remember it. Of course there is [name_f]Flora[/name_f] Buttery, but hey - Its not worst than Curious [name_m]George[/name_m], [name_f]Ellie[/name_f] Elephant, [name_m]Thomas[/name_m] the Train, [name_f]Lottie[/name_f] Potty and goodness knows what else is out there of “easily bullied” names there are out there. And with the names around today, I don’t think [name_f]Flora[/name_f] is the weirdest of the bunch to be completely honest!
I think the name [name_f]Flora[/name_f] is beautiful! I particularly like it because I am studying Classics, and [name_f]Flora[/name_f] was the goddess of flowers, springtime, and all those lovely things! The name actually derives from the Latin “flos” - flower, which is cute. But even without the lovely meaning behind it, it is an utterly charming name. Clearly the people who have criticised it have had a run-in with a [name_f]Flora[/name_f] who has tempered their appreciation of the name; how the heck does the name you give your baby affect their appearance?!
Overall, I think you should give your child a name that you love and that they can live with throughout their whole life, and [name_f]Flora[/name_f] is such a name.
The name has beautiful connotations of nature and grace. Go for it.
It is a lovely name!
