What's wrong with the name Laura?

It just never seems to do well on polls or when I mention it to people as a name we’re considering. Despite its popularity, we get so many compliments on our daughter’s name ([name_f]Emma[/name_f] [name_f]Rose[/name_f]) that I would hate to have a lackluster/boring name for her little sister!

We’re strongly considering [name_f]Laura[/name_f] [name_f]Juliet[/name_f], but people’s reactions are seriously making me doubt the name and want to go crawling back to square one! I like [name_f]Stella[/name_f], [name_f]Nora[/name_f] and [name_f]Cora[/name_f], but dh doesn’t care for them. Plus, they both seem to be skyrocketing up the popularity ladder and I’d rather not have two super-popular names! We like [name_f]Ava[/name_f], but are steering clear due to popularity as well. [name_f]Cora[/name_f] is about as non-traditional as we’re willing to go. We also like very classic names like [name_f]Katherine[/name_f] and [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f]. And I’m totally crushing on [name_f]Gianna[/name_f] (nn [name_f]Gia[/name_f] or [name_f]GiGi[/name_f] since our last name begins with a G), but he thinks it’s far too Italian for our third generation 50% Italian daughter.

I’m just wondering if I’m missing something about the name [name_f]Laura[/name_f] since it’s currently the ONLY name that my husband and I both like. I wouldn’t say we love it, but at least neither of us dislike it.

Ultimately, he has given me 100% “naming rights,” since he has a potential future son’s name locked up already. And he didn’t care for [name_f]Emma[/name_f] [name_f]Rose[/name_f] when I picked that either…and now he loves it and it suits her perfectly.

Sorry for the rant. I’m just 27 weeks along and have been at this baby name game since day 1 of this pregnancy (I had two miscarriages between my daughter and this pregnancy so I feel like we’ve been playing the baby name game for a year now!)

Nothing is wrong with [name_f]Laura[/name_f]. Can’t go wrong with it. I find it slightly boring, but that might be because of a person I knew with the name. Plus one person’s boring is another person’s classic.

Personally I prefer [name_f]Lara[/name_f], [name_f]Maura[/name_f], [name_f]Nora[/name_f] et al. Not for any particular reason other than personal taste.

I think [name_f]Laura[/name_f] [name_f]Juliet[/name_f] is very pretty.

I don’t think there is anything wrong with it, but like pp said, I do find it boring. If you like it though that is all that matters. [name_f]Lara[/name_f] [name_f]Juliet[/name_f] is a fine name.

I love [name_f]Laura[/name_f] [name_f]Juliet[/name_f]! It’s classic but recognizable but not all that common anymore. I’d love to meet a little [name_f]Laura[/name_f], sister to [name_f]Emma[/name_f]!

I love [name_f]Laura[/name_f]! It’s timeless; I can imagine someone of any age with this name:) [name_f]Emma[/name_f] and [name_f]Laura[/name_f] definitely seem like sisters! Go for it!

I’m having the same problem. People seem to view this lovely, classic name as ‘plain’ and ‘boring’.
It’s perhaps not the prettiest, but it is a very strong, timeless name. It fits any girl, it is not super girly and its not super tomboyish. It’s professional and elegant. It’s feminine without being over the top. Easy to spell and say. And there is the wonderful [name_f]Laura[/name_f] Ingalls [name_m]Wilder[/name_m] association.
Nothing about [name_f]Laura[/name_f] is wrong! It’s a beautiful name and one of the few girls names that won’t date or be overly popular. [name_f]Laura[/name_f] is lovely
I do really like [name_f]Stella[/name_f] too though, and [name_f]Ava[/name_f] is pretty as well
[name_f]Laura[/name_f] [name_f]Juliet[/name_f] is great!

[name_f]Laura[/name_f] [name_f]Juliet[/name_f] is a lovely name! I think it’s just a bit less exciting for me because a grew up with the name, whereas [name_f]Cora[/name_f], [name_f]Nora[/name_f], and [name_f]Stella[/name_f] are more vintage.

I wouldn’t call [name_f]Laura[/name_f] dated though, as it’s more classic than that. I think it’s a nice choice.

If you’re not opposed to 2 E names, I would suggest [name_f]Elora[/name_f] [name_f]Juliet[/name_f]… gorg!!

I think [name_f]Laura[/name_f] would be so sweet on a little girl. I think it’s just a hard time for the name as it’s a classic but had a good heyday in which case it can sound a bit dated. FWIW, I think [name_f]Emma[/name_f] and [name_f]Laura[/name_f] would make a beautiful sibset.

I put [name_f]Laura[/name_f] in the same category as [name_f]Emma[/name_f], [name_f]Sarah[/name_f], and [name_f]Anna[/name_f]. Beautiful, strong, feminine, sweet.

It seems as though people want girl names to be either super funky, eclectic, and unpopular OR very fussy, romantic, and “nick-name-able.” Simple and sweet gets thrown aside as boring or dull. It’s a shame. While I tend to lean towards less classical names, I do not lack appreciation for the subtle loveliness of [name_f]Laura[/name_f] (and names alike.) Some people seem to discount a name and its beauty if it goes against their personal style.

[name_f]Stella[/name_f], [name_f]Nora[/name_f], and [name_f]Cora[/name_f] are nice. I don’t categorize them the same as I do [name_f]Laura[/name_f], and I think [name_f]Laura[/name_f] sounds nicer with big sister [name_f]Emma[/name_f].
[name_f]Emma[/name_f] and [name_f]Ava[/name_f] as sisters loses the classic vibe and gives off more of a trendy vibe. [name_f]Eva[/name_f] is a sweet alternative.

[name_f]Laura[/name_f] is great and works wonderfully for your sibset. While it isn’t something I’d choose, I’d love to meet a little [name_f]Laura[/name_f].

i like laura for sentimental reasons, but as a name i do find it a bit boring and maybe frilly. i find emma a more exciting name, but probably just because it’s more vintage-y to me (i didn’t meet any emmas until i was a teen ager and my cousin named her daughter). i’m italian btw, my name is the longer version of gianna and i REALLY dislike it for that reason: around here gianna is a nick name, and not a cute one at all (i know it’s pronounced differently in english tho). for some reason i think emma and juliet would be a nicer combo than emma and laura. how about violet? emma rose and violet laura.

Unfortunately our last name ends in -et causing [name_f]Juliet[/name_f]/[name_f]Scarlet[/name_f]/[name_f]Violet[/name_f]/etc to rhyme. I love [name_f]Juliet[/name_f] enough to overlook the rhyming as a middle, but not as first.

I love [name_f]Laura[/name_f]! It’s my cousin’s name, and she’s the only one I know. My aunt named her after [name_f]Laura[/name_f] Ingalls.

I don’t think anything’s wrong with [name_f]Laura[/name_f], it’s one of my favourites, actually. It’s a beautiful, classic choice!

I think [name_f]Laura[/name_f] [name_f]Juliet[/name_f] is a beautiful name. I just said on a different post that I thought [name_f]Laura[/name_f] is ready for a comeback. I slightly prefer [name_f]Lauren[/name_f] to [name_f]Laura[/name_f] but I still think [name_f]Laura[/name_f] is very nice. [name_f]Emma[/name_f] and [name_f]Laura[/name_f] are very nice together.

I prefer [name_f]Lauren[/name_f]…[name_f]Lauren[/name_f] [name_f]Juliet[/name_f] is lovely! But [name_f]Laura[/name_f] is absolutely fine. It was VERY popular in my generation (I’m 30 and grew up in [name_f]England[/name_f]) so I know tons of [name_f]Laura[/name_f]'s, some I like and some not so much. I think that’s generally the issue with popular names, people will always have a (or multiple) prior associations. The name itself is completely non offensive and has a pretty sound. Have you considered [name_f]Laurel[/name_f]?

I agree!

I’m what people consider an adventurous namer - see my signature - and I have [name_f]Laura[/name_f] really high on my list!! [name_f]Laura[/name_f] [name_u]Hunter[/name_u] [name_u]Brooke[/name_u] was my initial combo, which has since been amended to [name_f]Laura[/name_f] [name_f]Celestia[/name_f] [name_f]Pearl[/name_f].

It’s not boring, and no other little girls will have the name! It will feel special.

You told the story of your hubby coming round to love [name_f]Emma[/name_f], I think others will come round to loving [name_f]Laura[/name_f].

I really like [name_f]Laura[/name_f], and I think it’s classic and underused rather than dated, sort of how [name_f]Emma[/name_f] would have felt thirty years ago. Go for it!

I really love [name_f]Laura[/name_f] [name_f]Juliet[/name_f]. I think [name_f]Emma[/name_f] and [name_f]Laura[/name_f] sound stunning together as sisters but if you aren’t sold, what about [name_f]Laurel[/name_f] or [name_f]Lorelei[/name_f]?

I’m not a fan of [name_f]Laura[/name_f], but there isn’t anything wrong with it and it does fit the style of [name_f]Emma[/name_f] very well. You’re never going to get everyone (or even most people’s approval) - so as long as you’re not using a name that offends a close family member, just go for it. Plus it’s the kid that makes the name, not the other way round!

I find [name_f]Laura[/name_f] nice enough, but a bit dull. I don’t like it nearly as much as [name_f]Emma[/name_f], and it does seem a shame to compromise on a name that you just like.

I prefer [name_f]Nora[/name_f], [name_f]Cora[/name_f], [name_f]Ava[/name_f], [name_f]Juliet[/name_f] and [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f] as first names for a sister to [name_f]Emma[/name_f]. Are you dead set against [name_f]Juliet[/name_f] as the fn? I think [name_f]Emma[/name_f] and [name_f]Juliet[/name_f] are lovely together

I also prefer [name_f]Lara[/name_f], [name_f]Lana[/name_f], [name_f]Laurel[/name_f] and [name_f]Lauren[/name_f] to [name_f]Laura[/name_f] - would any of those be an option?
