I am a midwife so obviously I see lots of babies everyday and I’m always a little out out if any of my patients use names I like. It doesn’t necessiarily put me off the name (I don’t know these people outside of of my professional capacity) but it serves to remind me how popular the name really are.
Because I always tend to lean towards girl names more than boys’ when a couple name their son a name I like I can’t seem to feel to bothered but if somebody names their daughter [name_u]Ruby[/name_u] or [name_f]Florence[/name_f] (two of my favourite names) then I feel this small moment of utter terror.
I’m quite worried about the royal baby because [name_m]George[/name_m] now feels a little tainted to me and I’m dreading what might become of any name they choose now.
Girls’ names that I love that I hear far too often for my liking are:
[name_f]Isla[/name_f]
[name_f]Lily[/name_f]
[name_f]Amelia[/name_f]
[name_f]Grace[/name_f]
[name_f]Zoe[/name_f]
[name_f]Ellie[/name_f]
[name_f]Millie[/name_f]
Furthermore, I’m worried for [name_f]Mae[/name_f], [name_f]Grace[/name_f], [name_f]Rose[/name_f] and [name_f]Louise[/name_f] because they are always shoved into middle spot as a filler name when they are such pretty names! I knew a girl called [name_f]Louise[/name_f] and people always said when she introduced herself “Oh! That’s my middle name!”
What names are you scared for?
(I know this is just a silly fear and that if you truly love a name it doesn’t matter how much it’s used by others.)
A celebrity just named her baby girl [name_m]Wilder[/name_m] and I almost cried. The [name_f]Laura[/name_f] Ingalls [name_m]Wilder[/name_m] books were my introduction to [name_u]America[/name_u], and the name is in my fiancee’s family. I had it chosen as my number 1, in secret.
When [name_f]Ruth[/name_f] and [name_f]Esther[/name_f] became popular I felt a twinge.
I’m worried most about [name_f]Violet[/name_f], [name_f]Charlotte[/name_f], [name_f]Audrey[/name_f], and [name_f]Eva[/name_f] lately, but also [name_f]Zoe[/name_f]. They’re climbing pretty high, but I would still use any of them right now.
Right now I’m more worried about the fact that I don’t think I could name two daughters [name_f]Isabelle[/name_f] and [name_f]Adele[/name_f]! [name_f]Isabelle[/name_f]‘s been my favorite girls’ name for 5 years, but I’ve been really crushing on [name_f]Adele[/name_f] lately, so much so that I think it could possibly eclipse [name_f]Isabelle[/name_f], which makes me sad. I’ve invested so much love into her that I really don’t want to let her go. le sigh.
I most definitely feel for you! Especially with your profession, it’s like a recurring thing you can’t stop.
Luckily, most of the names that my husband and I like are uncommon, and I do not see them rising anytime.
However, there is that little piece of me that is TERRIFIED that one of my favorites will rise through the charts.
The last thing that I want is for my child to have a common name. Throughout school I was [name_f]Sarah[/name_f] K. and there was [name_f]Sarah[/name_f] R. and on and on and on. Frustrating.
Lately I’ve seen [name_f]Louella[/name_f], [name_u]Fable[/name_u], and [name_u]Aspen[/name_u] appearing more on these boards then I’d like and my heart will skip a beat.
BUT, I’m hoping it’s just a Nameberry thing, as I personally haven’t heard [name_u]Fable[/name_u] or [name_f]Louella[/name_f] and have only known of one [name_u]Aspen[/name_u].
Anyways, you are not alone in your fear! It would be tragically heart-breaking if someone were to use a name I am so in love with. Like you, I feel as if I’ve already invested so much in some of these names that I can even picture them.
Here’s to hopefully irrational fears!
I used to be worried about popularity but after talking to DH it doesn’t matter too much anymore. We both love [name_f]Alice[/name_f] regardless of how popular she gets. Same thing with [name_m]Calvin[/name_m] too. This might change though since we know a few friends and family members who are expecting and I know it will ruin those names if they use them first. I don’t really worry about using a name that’s commonly in the middle name spot as [name_f]Jane[/name_f], [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f], and [name_f]Anne[/name_f]/[name_f]Anna[/name_f] are very high on my list. I think they are gorgeous names and if someone says “oh that’s my middle name!” I’ll just think to myself “poor girl! What a shame to hide such a beauty!”
[name_f]Amelia[/name_f]
I so as
[name_u]Eden[/name_u]
[name_f]Lucy[/name_f]
[name_f]Agnes[/name_f]
