I was having a momentary crush on Enola… but everything says the meaning is: “alone spelled backwards”… [name_f][/name_f] That is so sad and depressing to me! Why would you want to name someone “alone”??

Thanks for listening to my emotional outburst… [name_f][/name_f] That is all.

[name_m]Feel[/name_m] free to share any names that have been ruined for you by unfortunate meanings!
I believe the meaning “alone” just comes from it being an anadrome. The actual meaning is black fox or just fox as Enola/Inola is a Cherokee word and was also the name of a prominent Chieftan in the 18th and 19th century (for which many towns in the US are named after).
For me its Cecilia though; one of my nephews was born deaf and went to a special school for the blind and deaf as a young child; one of his best friends is a Cecilia who is mostly blind (due to illness that happened as a toddler) and has chosen to go by a different name as a teenager because of the unfortunate irony. It’s made me a little hesitant about names with meanings that are also afflictions.
Rigel is another, meaning foot, which I just find odd? And as much as I like Rigel I just don’t think I could ever actually use it for that reason
For me its Claude/Claudia, meaning “lame” or “limping.” I adore them both, but I don’t want one of my kids to be named something like “king” and the other one to be named “lame” and then have them ask what their name means
[name_m]Miles[/name_m] (one of possible meanings: soldier)

I love these names, have a huge crush on each! But… battle, battle, battle. [name_f][/name_f] I’m not even an epic fantasy fan… and that boar [name_f][/name_f] [name_f][/name_f] in [name_f]Everild[/name_f]
Honestly, it doesn’t bother me. I have a problem with [name_f]Enola[/name_f] because I’m a fan of the original [name_m]Sherlock[/name_m] [name_m]Holmes[/name_m] and I have a hard time with spinoffs. However, the meaning “alone” isn’t inherently bad.

I love the name [name_f]Soledad[/name_f], meaning solitude. It can be poetic. All of us must learn how to be happy alone in order to be happy with others. Being alone is a necessary and kind of beautiful part of the human experience. That’s just the way I look at it, at least
I don’t pay a ton of attention to meanings so i have some unfortunate ones on my list (Tristan and [name_f]Cecilia[/name_f] come to mind) but one that I haven’t been able to quite look past is [name_f]Perdita[/name_f] meaning “lost”. I think maybe because its an unusual name the meaning sticks out to me more? The others are just fairly classic names that I’ve know people irl with so the meaning doesn’t really register.
I do worry that most of my names are fantastical fairy otherworldly names and then the front runner for a first daughter is [name_f]Tabitha[/name_f] which means… gazelle [name_f][/name_f] I mean, I know how I would feel if I was named ‘gazelle’ and my siblings names meant something much more romantic like ‘white rose’ or ‘wanderer’. But then, I grew up super smug about the fact that my name means crowned. It matters to me, it may not matter to my kids.
I generally don’t pay attention to meanings, and it’s more of a bonus if it has a positive or particularly lovely one for me. For example, I still love [name_f]Cecilia[/name_f], even though it means “blind”.
Yeah, that is unfortunate! For me it’s the name [name_m]Mars[/name_m] [name_f][/name_f]- love that name especially for a middle slot. But [name_m]Mars[/name_m] is the [name_m]Roman[/name_m] “god of war” and I just wouldn’t feel good about using it. The jury’s still out on whether I could make an exception for [name_m]Marzo[/name_m]
[name_m]Brendan[/name_m] [name_f][/name_f]- while most commonly given the meaning prince/king or crow/raven, some scholars trace the [name_m]Irish[/name_m] origins back to the meaning of “smelling hair.”
The one that’s always frustrating to me is [name_m]Cassian[/name_m][name_f][/name_f]. He’s such a fab name that has a really positive association for me, but he means “hollow.” It makes me so sad
[name_f]Azubah[/name_f] [name_f][/name_f]- love the sound so much, great nicknames… But it means “forsaken” [name_f][/name_f][name_m]Odysseus[/name_m] [name_f][/name_f]- probably means “to hate” [name_f][/name_f][name_f]Tisiphone[/name_f] [name_f][/name_f]- “avenging murder”
That is a waaaay better meaning! I saw one site that mentioned this, but then 10 others that said it meant “alone”… apparently, they were just uneducated
I think the meaning gazelle is really great. I know plenty of people whose names have animal meanings. A gazelle is quick, graceful, and mountainous- a pretty cool animal to be named for.
