Not at all. I think of my Pop He was half Welsh and half Irish (with one of the most common Welsh surnames going! lol) However, he had dark olive skin and black hair so he could have easily been mistaken for Italian.
To me, a [name]Joseph[/name] could be of any nationality. Besides, I thought [name]Giuseppe[/name] was Italian for [name]Joseph[/name] anyway
[name]Joseph[/name] can be almost anything but Italian. It’s [name]Giuseppe[/name] as [name]Renny[/name] said.
My husband’s family is Irish and Eastern European - and [name]Joseph[/name] is a popular name in his family. I think of [name]Joseph[/name] as a classic for any ethnic background.
There are a lot of Italian-American [name]Joe[/name]'s and [name]Joey[/name]'s…but there are also just a lot of Josephs in general. I wouldn’t jump to that conclusion at all.
I think k of Mormons… Italian would not have been my first thought at all…
Yeah, I would never think Italian. [name]Joseph[/name] could be almost any nationality! In fact, Italian would be one of my last guesses.
[name]Joseph[/name] is one of those names that crosses basically every nationality.
I think [name]Joseph[/name] is classic/common enough to be used for any nationality.
um… [name]Joseph[/name] is hebrew, and it’s my husband’s middle name
[name]Joseph[/name] belongs to no culture. It’s a name with no borders. That’s why I think it’s classic choice!
Italian? Never would have crossed my mind!
My grandfather was named [name]Joseph[/name] and he was french-Canadian. I don’t consider it Italian at all.
Thanks so much for your responses, confirming what I thought. I can hardly wait to tell him the results of this poll 100% of Nameberries so far have said “No”, you wouldn’t assume [name]Joseph[/name] is Italian.
What renrose said - The Italian form of [name]Joseph[/name] is [name]Giuseppe[/name] so no, I wouldn’t think someone named [name]Joseph[/name] was Italian. I wouldn’t think someone named [name]Joseph[/name] was any certain nationality, to be honest.
haha, I am with @catloverd, [name]Joseph[/name] is Hebrew. It’s popular for Italians, like [name]Anthony[/name] and [name]Vincent[/name], but it’s not an actual Italian name–that’d be [name]Giuseppe[/name].
For what it’s worth, the two Josephs I know most closely are Polish and Lebanese. I think it’s fine. [name]Joseph[/name]‘s a classic. I may be biased, though; [name]Joseph[/name] is a MN for my favorite boys’ name, and I can just imagine it on a child of any nationality.
Hahahaha no. The very first thing I think of is my father, because that’s his name. Then I get past it.
I would only expect [name]Joseph[/name] to be Italian if his last name was Italian.
Not at all. My SO is [name]Joseph[/name] and although he is full Italian, it’s also a common name in my family (my brother and uncle are also named [name]Joseph[/name]) and we aren’t one bit Italian. It works on any nationality.
I don’t associate [name]Joseph[/name] with any particular nationality. Was he a big Friends fan or something?
