Stunning names!! I voted for [name_f]Erendira[/name_f], but Atlacoya and [name_f]Zyanya[/name_f] also stop me in my tracks :star_struck:

[name_f]My[/name_f] favorite is Anacaona but It’s also worth saying that that is definitely not an Aztec name, it’s a Taíno one, she was a cacica in Hispaniola. Coming from someone who has strong Taíno heritage

Thank you, & it was definitely listed as an Aztec girl name. I have Aztec [name_f]Indian[/name_f] in me as well.

I am not a Nahuatl speaker by any means, but I will say that none of these names seem to be Aztec in origin.

As it has been stated already, Anacaona was not an Aztec person but rather a TaĂno from the [name_u]Island[/name_u] re-named Hispaniola by [name_m]Christopher[/name_m] [name_m]Columbus[/name_m]. Where the modern day countries of Haiti and Dominican Republic are located.

[name_f]Erendira[/name_f] is another I am 100% is not Aztec, but it is at least closer geographically to where the Aztec Empire once stood. It is actually of Purepecha origin, which was another worthy empire. [name_f]Zyanya[/name_f] is of Mixtec and Zapotec origin. Different cultures and langauges to Nahuatl.

I am unsure about [name_f]Tayanna[/name_f] and Atlacoya, but linguistically they don’t seem very close to Nahuatl words or names that I am familiar with.

I also hope to make clear that this is stated with support and respect. One of my biggest pet-peeves as a name nerd is how Pre-Columbian names in the Americas are treated as generic, as if the actual origin of the name is vague enough that it can be called Taino, [name_u]Mayan[/name_u], Aztec, Quechua… or also just Apache, [name_u]Lakota[/name_u], Innuit. It just triggers the name nerd in me who wants to say “actually…” Peoples around the continent still speak these languages and are aware of which names are theirs and which are not.

[name_f]Lovely[/name_f] names, but some of them are absolutely not Aztec and the others are… perhaps? maybe? Aztec?

There is always something pretty which is absolutely Nahuatl:

Tonantzin (a name I adore)
[name_u]Quetzal[/name_u]
Aquetzalli
Yohualli
Mixtli
[name_f]Xochitl[/name_f]

Thank you for the information, & the names were all listed as Aztec names.

I dont have to worry about any of these names because my fiancé doesn’t like them. I was just curious to which one everyone liked. For our future baby girl, if we have one, we will be going with [name_f]Camila[/name_f] [name_u]Carmen[/name_u], [name_f]Winona[/name_f] [name_u]Carmen[/name_u], or [name_f]Paulina[/name_f] Xoco (Zo-ko).
