DD’s name is [name_u]Scout[/name_u] and one of the things I liked about it when we were debating names was that berries would put it in a variety of different categories of names implying that there was some versatility with the name, possible future sibsets, etc. The three categories below were the most commonly mentioned, so my ask is 1) which of the three do you think is the best fit (or would you categorize [name_u]Scout[/name_u] in some other way) and 2) what other names in the various categories would you pair with [name_u]Scout[/name_u]?
It’s a tie between outdoorsy/adventurous/nature and quirky/vintage/literary for me! But funny enough, a lot of the names I would choose to pair with it might fit better into the Southern preppy category.
So, [name_u]Scout[/name_u] definitely is versatile in that it fits into all of those categories. [name_f]My[/name_f] first thought when hearing the name is always the literary association, but I don’t think it matches as well with other names in that category. I’d say the best fit is outdoorsy/adventurous.
I LOVE [name_f]Birdie[/name_f] it’s near the top of my list right now. I also really like wren, [name_f]Winnie[/name_f], [name_u]Lux[/name_u], and [name_u]Sutton[/name_u]. Thanks!
Thanks! [name_u]Piper[/name_u] is a great match but I worry somewhat about the discrepancy in popularity, something to ponder. I also really like [name_u]Winslow[/name_u] and [name_u]Blair[/name_u]!
Thank you! I love [name_f]Birdie[/name_f], [name_u]Lark[/name_u], and [name_u]Aspen[/name_u]. And [name_u]Rowan[/name_u] would be high up on our list if it wasn’t so similar to DH’s name.
I have the same issue with [name_u]Scout[/name_u]. I think of TKAM first but feel weird pairing it with the [name_f]Alice[/name_f]’s of the world. I’ve gotten good feedback on [name_f]Lyra[/name_f] and [name_f]Beatrix[/name_f] before though so maybe it just takes the right name.
Quirky/vintage/literary for sure. I can see why people would pick the outdoorsy/adventurous option though, mainly because of the character herself being a rough-and-tumble girl always outside playing.
I think of [name_u]Jean[/name_u] [name_u]Louise[/name_u] ‘[name_u]Scout[/name_u]’ [name_u]Finch[/name_u] first and foremost. I think [name_u]Scout[/name_u] is one of those names that is strongly defined by its literary character. I don’t think the nickname would’ve entered more common use as a first name if it hadn’t been for To Kill a Mockingbird. For this reason, I tend attribute things about the character (tomboyish) and setting (Southern, 1930s) from the book to the name itself. But it’s also a word name, so it’s unisex and conjures imagery of outdoor exploration as well.
That’s how I believe those three categories emerged. In my own mind, it is difficult to separate any of those things out on its own. So the idea I like most for a future brother or sister is to search for other strong, positive character names or individuals from history that are meaningful to you. Then their names would share a link other than style. That is an entirely subjective task though, but here’s a few that could work: [name_f]Greer[/name_f], [name_f]Joni[/name_f], [name_f]Frida[/name_f], [name_f]Hermione[/name_f], [name_f]Matilda[/name_f], [name_u]Austen[/name_u], [name_f]Bronte[/name_f].
