Which of these boy name combos do you like best?

Hello!

[name_f][/name_f]

I asked a couple weeks ago about suggestions for a brother for [name_m]Hollis[/name_m] [name_m]Edward[/name_m] and [name_f]Blythe[/name_f] [name_f]Lydia[/name_f] and got some lovely suggestions! I’ve been able to narrow my boy name list down and come up with some combinations with my favorite middle name options.

[name_f][/name_f]

[name_f]So[/name_f], which is your favorite of these options? Also feel free to say what you think of each one or anything I should consider to help me narrow it down further!

[name_f][/name_f]

[name_m]Emmett[/name_m] [name_m]Isaac[/name_m] (my husband’s favorite)

[name_f][/name_f]

[name_m]Roman[/name_m] [name_m]Isaac[/name_m] (my favorite…my only concern is, since we are practicing [name_m]Roman[/name_m] Catholic, is “Roman” an awkward thing to name your son? [name_m]Like[/name_m] naming him Catholicy McCatholicpants? [name_f]Or[/name_f] I am just overthinking it since this is a generally popular name right now that lots of people of different backgrounds and faiths use?)

[name_f][/name_f]

[name_m]Roman[/name_m] [name_m]Anthony[/name_m]

[name_f][/name_f]

[name_m]Sterling[/name_m] [name_m]Matthew[/name_m]

[name_f][/name_f]

[name_m]Sterling[/name_m] [name_m]Anthony[/name_m]

[name_f][/name_f]

[name_m]Cedric[/name_m] [name_m]Matthew[/name_m] (is this one “wearable”? It’s hard to picture actually calling a baby or child ‘Cedric’ to get their attention but I love how the name sounds. And I don’t like ‘Ceddy’.)

[name_f][/name_f]

[name_m]Kieran[/name_m] [name_m]Matthew[/name_m]

[name_f][/name_f]

[name_m]Kieran[/name_m] [name_m]Vincent[/name_m]

[name_f][/name_f]

[name_m]Abram[/name_m] [name_m]Anthony[/name_m] (does this one work for a baby? I can easily picture [name_m]Abram[/name_m] on an older child or adult but not sure if I can picture calling a newborn that)

[name_f][/name_f]

[name_m]Simon[/name_m] [name_m]Anthony[/name_m]

[name_f][/name_f]

[name_m]Simon[/name_m] [name_m]Matthew[/name_m]

[name_f][/name_f]

[name_m]Spencer[/name_m] [name_m]Isaac[/name_m]

[name_f][/name_f]

Thanks in advance!

I like Sterling, Abram, and Simon with your kids’ names. Slightly prefer Sterling since it’s unisex like Hollis and Blythe. Sterling Matthew is handsome. Abram and Simon match Hollis and Blythe’s soft sounds, though.

I like [name_m]Kieran[/name_m] and [name_m]Roman[/name_m] the best with [name_m]Hollis[/name_m] and [name_f]Blythe[/name_f]!

[name_f][/name_f]

For [name_m]Roman[/name_m], I don’t think it’s an issue! I mean, I know [name_m]Roman[/name_m] Catholic is the full name, but 99% of the time it’ll just be referred to as “Catholic” ommitting the “Roman”, no? I’m not Catholic so I may be mistaken but that’s how I usually hear it! I think the first association will be Ancient [name_m]Rome[/name_m]!

I would choose

[name_f][/name_f]

[name_m]Roman[/name_m] [name_m]Isaac[/name_m] or [name_m]Kieran[/name_m] [name_m]Matthew[/name_m]

I love [name_m]Sterling[/name_m] [name_m]Anthony[/name_m] with your other kids’ names.

[name_f][/name_f]

[name_m]No[/name_m], I don’t think [name_m]Roman[/name_m] is “too Catholic”.

[name_f]Amazing[/name_f] list!

[name_f][/name_f]

I think [name_m]Emmett[/name_m] and [name_m]Roman[/name_m] are divine.
[name_f][/name_f][name_m]Emmett[/name_m] [name_m]Isaac[/name_m] flows beautifully, I give it 10/10
[name_f][/name_f][name_m]Roman[/name_m] [name_m]Isaac[/name_m] is lovely too, 9/10

[name_f][/name_f]

I don’t think of [name_m]Roman[/name_m] Catholic when I hear [name_m]Roman[/name_m]. That said I’m not in the Catholic church, but maybe consider how often the term ‘Roman Catholic’ actually comes up in your circles? Is it that you call yourselves ‘Catholic’ knowing that you mean the [name_m]Roman[/name_m] sort, but you don’t actually use the term that often? [name_f]In[/name_f] that sense, I think [name_m]Roman[/name_m] is a nice nod to your faith. Idk, maybe ask some fellow churchgoers.

[name_f][/name_f]

[name_m]Sterling[/name_m] [name_f][/name_f]- I like that this has a similar heavy L sound, which goes well with the siblings. [name_m]Sterling[/name_m] [name_m]Matthew[/name_m] is the best combo. Still doesn’t resonate with me as strongly as [name_m]Emmett[/name_m] or [name_m]Roman[/name_m] (but that’s personal taste) 7/10

[name_f][/name_f]

[name_m]Cedric[/name_m] [name_f][/name_f]- If you don’t like Ceddy (or Ricky) I would drop this one. Sounds like you’re on the fence with this one anyway, I would drop it. I do think it sounds very storybook and sweet with [name_m]Hollis[/name_m]. 5/10

[name_f][/name_f]

[name_m]Kieran[/name_m] [name_f][/name_f]- love this one but it feels a bit severe with [name_m]Hollis[/name_m] & [name_f]Blythe[/name_f] which are breathy and elegant. 5/10

[name_f][/name_f]

[name_m]Abram[/name_m] [name_f][/name_f]- I love [name_m]Abram[/name_m], and I think it works in the sibset. [name_m]Abe[/name_m] is a great nickname for a baby, ‘baby Abe’ is pretty adorable. 6/10

[name_f][/name_f]

[name_m]Simon[/name_m] [name_f][/name_f]- meh, not as interesting as [name_m]Hollis[/name_m] or [name_f]Blythe[/name_f], though they do flow together [name_f][/name_f]- if it was [name_m]Simon[/name_m] vs [name_m]Emmett[/name_m] (similar consonants, vibe), I choose [name_m]Emmett[/name_m] for unique-ness factor, and flow with siblings 5/10

[name_f][/name_f]

[name_m]Spencer[/name_m] [name_f][/name_f]- also not crazy about it, the flow is off as it is with [name_m]Kieran[/name_m], also I don’t think the style is right either. Feels more modern and buzzy, where the siblings are more tailored and laid back. 3/10

Lots of good choices!

[name_f][/name_f]

Have you considered using [name_m]Isaac[/name_m] as a first name, since it features in the favorites of both you and your husband? If you just like it as a middle, disregard this! I could see [name_m]Isaac[/name_m] [name_m]Anthony[/name_m] working well, but it depends on the last name!

[name_f][/name_f]

[name_f]My[/name_f] personal favorites of your first names are [name_m]Cedric[/name_m] (I could see it on a baby) [name_f][/name_f], [name_m]Abram[/name_m] (ditto), and [name_m]Simon[/name_m] (and of your middle names [name_m]Isaac[/name_m], [name_m]Vincent[/name_m], [name_m]Matthew[/name_m], and Anthony)!

[name_f][/name_f]

However, taking my taste out of it, I could see [name_m]Kieran[/name_m], [name_m]Emmett[/name_m], [name_m]Roman[/name_m], and [name_m]Spencer[/name_m] working well with siblings. [name_m]Roman[/name_m] feels very usable and not too on-the-nose to me. [name_m]Sterling[/name_m] feels a little more out-there than siblings, but not too obviously. [name_f]Do[/name_f] you like [name_m]Emmett[/name_m]? Does your husband like [name_m]Roman[/name_m]? It might make sense to focus on favorites with a set of good names.

[name_f][/name_f]

Choosing for me? [name_m]Simon[/name_m] or [name_m]Cedric[/name_m] [name_m]Matthew[/name_m]. Choosing for you (and taking the front-runners out), I like [name_m]Kieran[/name_m] [name_m]Vincent[/name_m].

I actually like [name_m]Kieran[/name_m] [name_m]Vincent[/name_m] best with your kids’ names!

Thanks! Yes I feel like the ‘Roman’ part is always omitted! And I love the ancient [name_m]Rome[/name_m] association.

Thank you so much!

Yeah I feel like I was actually more worried about the “overly Catholic” association being thought of from non-Catholic people so it’s reassuring to hear that it doesn’t come across that way!

You are so spot on with all your comments. I feel pretty confident that I can drop Cedric as well as Simon, Spencer, and maybe Kieran too from serious consideration!

Ooh and I love “Baby Abe”! I never thought of that newborn nickname for some reason. I call my girl “Baby Blythe” too so that would be so cute.

Thank you! That is so helpful. [name_f]My[/name_f] husband likes [name_m]Isaac[/name_m] as a first name but I don’t because, even though I LOVE it as a name, I don’t really like saying it to the point that I want to say it 10+ times a day if that makes any sense lol. I also already know quite a few little Isaacs and as someone with a common name, I didn’t really like the sometimes embarrassing misunderstandings that came with being 1 of 3 with the same name in a class.

[name_f][/name_f]

As for if I like [name_m]Emmett[/name_m] and if my husband likes [name_m]Roman[/name_m], that is a very astute question that I should probably focus more on lol. [name_m]Emmett[/name_m] was my suggestion in the first place, but I’m not sure that I love it more than the others and as a lifelong name nerd I want to for sure get to use my very favorites lol. [name_f]My[/name_f] husband is okay with [name_m]Roman[/name_m] and thinks it’s fine but he doesn’t love[name_f][/name_f] it (but he isn’t really the type to love a name until it is actually his child’s name haha)

I really like:

[name_f][/name_f]

[name_m]Emmett[/name_m] [name_m]Isaac[/name_m] → friendly and bright with a nice mix of soft and sharper sounds; familiar but not overly popular.

[name_f][/name_f]

[name_m]Abram[/name_m] [name_m]Anthony[/name_m] → slightly unexpected but easily recognizable, strong and solid without having rough edges [name_f][/name_f]- I can imagine a baby [name_m]Abram[/name_m] (and I guess he’d be a baby for a lot shorter time than he’d be a child and an adult :person_shrugging:) [name_f][/name_f]- plus nicknames [name_m]Bram[/name_m], [name_m]Abe[/name_m], Abes, [name_m]Abey[/name_m], [name_m]Ames[/name_m] might soften it?

[name_f][/name_f]

[name_m]Spencer[/name_m] [name_m]Isaac[/name_m] → stylish and sophisticated with a hint of retro. I like the surname-y feel of it with B and H

[name_f][/name_f]

[name_m]Sterling[/name_m] [name_m]Matthew[/name_m] → again, I like the surname-y style, the unisex vibe, and the hint of edgy-coolness it has to it. Distinctive but approachable.

[name_f][/name_f]

A few other thoughts:

[name_f][/name_f]

[name_m]Roman[/name_m] [name_m]Isaac[/name_m] → I don’t think it’s odd to use as a [name_m]Roman[/name_m] Catholic! I’d never thought about it/connect it in that way before. I think more of, well, [name_m]Rome[/name_m] and Ancient Romans, and as a name, it matches up in my head sounding or feeling options like [name_m]Logan[/name_m], [name_m]Nolan[/name_m], [name_m]Rhodes[/name_m], [name_m]Banks[/name_m], [name_m]Brooks[/name_m], [name_m]Grayson[/name_m], [name_m]Lincoln[/name_m] etc. rather that with say, [name_m]Christian[/name_m]?
[name_f][/name_f]If it does worry you though, I’d recommend: [name_m]Ronan[/name_m], [name_m]Conan[/name_m], [name_m]Dominic[/name_m], [name_m]Rocco[/name_m], [name_m]Bowen[/name_m], [name_m]Donovan[/name_m], [name_m]Desmond[/name_m], [name_m]Robin[/name_m], [name_m]Royce[/name_m], [name_m]Damien[/name_m], [name_m]Soren[/name_m]

[name_f][/name_f]

[name_m]Cedric[/name_m] [name_m]Matthew[/name_m] → as much as I like [name_m]Cedric[/name_m], I’m not sure it feels right for you, given that it’s the one you seem most in doubt of [name_f][/name_f]- since you’re narrowing down, I’d strike it off

[name_f][/name_f]

I don’t love [name_m]Kieran[/name_m] and [name_m]Simon[/name_m] [name_f][/name_f]- they just don’t sparkle for me [name_f][/name_f]- however[name_f][/name_f], I think that’s just personal preference rather than an objective reflection on the names [name_f][/name_f]- they’re both solid options with plenty of versatility. [name_m]Kieran[/name_m] [name_m]Matthew[/name_m] and [name_m]Simon[/name_m] [name_m]Matthew[/name_m] are probably by preferred pairings [name_f][/name_f]- though [name_m]Simon[/name_m] [name_m]Vincent[/name_m] would be good too!

[name_f][/name_f]

I’d throw in the additional suggestions of: [name_f]Kiernan[/name_f], [name_m]Layton[/name_m], [name_m]Auden[/name_m], [name_m]Alban[/name_m], [name_m]Denver[/name_m], [name_m]Carey[/name_m], [name_f]Lennon[/name_f], [name_m]Lennox[/name_m], [name_m]Olsen[/name_m], [name_m]Orson[/name_m], [name_m]Keaton[/name_m]

Thank you so much!

[name_f][/name_f]

Yes that’s a good point that [name_m]Abram[/name_m] would be a baby for a much shorter time than being older lol. I feel like if a name doesn’t work on an adult, I just strike it right away, but if I can’t picture it on a baby, I try to talk myself into it for that reason lol

[name_f][/name_f]

I LOVE [name_m]Desmond[/name_m], [name_m]Soren[/name_m], and [name_m]Orson[/name_m]. [name_m]Soren[/name_m] and [name_m]Orson[/name_m] have already received the “absolutely not” from my husband and then our next-door neighbors who we are friends with named their baby [name_m]Desmond[/name_m] so I struck it from the list for that reason, even though my husband and I both love it. But maybe it deserves to be back on? Haha

[name_m]You[/name_m] have such a great list! With [name_m]Hollis[/name_m] & [name_f]Blythe[/name_f], [name_m]Emmett[/name_m] is my personal favorite (it’s also my brother’s name, so I might be a tad bias)! Two runner ups for me would be [name_m]Cedric[/name_m] – which I think is totally usable – and [name_m]Simon[/name_m].

All of your options are great, I think my favorite with brother and sister is [name_m]Sterling[/name_m] [name_m]Matthew[/name_m].

I’m liking [name_m]Emmett[/name_m], [name_m]Abram[/name_m], and [name_m]Roman[/name_m] for you! All the Ms! I suppose like others have said it’s that lovely softness which gels nicely with your set. I’m a fan of [name_m]Abram[/name_m] nn [name_m]Abe[/name_m] or [name_m]Bram[/name_m].

[name_f][/name_f]

[name_m]Simon[/name_m] and [name_m]Kieran[/name_m] feel too old school with the sibs, for me, and I’d scratch [name_m]Cedric[/name_m] as you have so many doubts.

I think [name_m]Roman[/name_m] [name_m]Isaac[/name_m] fits best.

[name_f][/name_f]

As a Catholic myself, it’s not awkward. I’ve only met one or two Romans. [name_m]The[/name_m] only other association I have with it is a stand-up comedian who made a point about Christians naming their sons after the people who killed the [name_m]Lord[/name_m] (though it is meant as a nod to Rome/pope). It’s subtle enough to work but holy enough to make a positive impression.

I like [name_m]Sterling[/name_m] [name_m]Matthew[/name_m] best with the siblings. I also love [name_m]Simon[/name_m], and would go with [name_m]Simon[/name_m] [name_m]Anthony[/name_m].

[name_m]Emmett[/name_m] and [name_m]Cedric[/name_m] get my votes, with [name_m]Simon[/name_m] being a close third! They feel similarly soft and cozy like [name_m]Hollis[/name_m] and [name_f]Blythe[/name_f] do, with that touch of chic vintage flair. I don’t mind [name_m]Abram[/name_m] or [name_m]Roman[/name_m] either, they’re just a bit harsher in sound for me than your other kiddos’ names!

[name_f][/name_f]

Maybe something like [name_m]Rome[/name_m] or even [name_m]Rowan[/name_m] could work as an alternative to [name_m]Roman[/name_m]? Perhaps they’re a bit different from your style (though I think [name_m]Rowan[/name_m] matches with H and B’s names beautifully!), but they feel just similar enough, while knocking out the worry about the name being too “Catholic-y”

I’d suggest doing an exercise where you and your husband separately rank your list of first names and then compare which names you both ranked highest. I like the ranking system of 1 for names you like most/could see yourself really using, 2 for names you like but don’t feel as strongly about, and 3 for names you aren’t convinced/can’t see yourself really using. [name_f]Any[/name_f] names that either of you have ranked 3 get ruled out – then you focus on any matching 1’s (if any) and then matching 2’s.

[name_f][/name_f]

I find this exercise is a good way to find your most agreeable names and if you go for one person’s favourite, it highlights where compromise could come from. For instance, using the other person’s favourite as the middle name. We did the exercise when naming our son. Once you have your first name decided, the middle name should be an easier discussion. All the best with your decision making!
