I’m looking for some cowboy-ish sounding names. I want something that sounds manly/tough, but isn’t unreasonably dated like [name_m]Bart[/name_m] or overly trendy like [name_m]Maverick[/name_m]. I do love vintage names but I’m having a hard time finding one that feels cowboy-ish and I like!
Some names I like with BUTS:
[name_m]Wesley[/name_m] (I love this name, but it’s my cousin’s name)
[name_m]Jed[/name_m] (I don’t like any of the longer forms)
[name_m]Zeb[/name_m] (see [name_m]Jed[/name_m])
[name_m]Jake[/name_m] (my dog’s name)
[name_m]Rhett[/name_m] (I wonder if it’s not used enough?)
[name_m]Levi[/name_m] (I also like [name_f]Ava[/name_f] and [name_u]Evelyn[/name_u], and I don’t think they would work well together)
[name_u]Emmett[/name_u] (it doesn’t really sound manly to me and there are no nicknames)
[name_u]Jesse[/name_u] (reminds me of the girl name, and dated)
[name_m]Clay[/name_m] (too earthy? Also, I’d like to give a future daughter the middle name [name_f]Mae[/name_f])
[name_u]Roscoe[/name_u] (too dog?)
[name_u]Blake[/name_u] (I want to like this but it doesn’t have much history and it reminds me of “flake”… oddly enough [name_m]Jake[/name_m] doesn’t remind me of “flake”)
[name_m]Des[/name_m] (not cowboy enough and I don’t like any of the long forms)
[name_u]Rex[/name_u] (too dog?)
I’d love opinions and suggestions!
Thanks in advance!
My favorites are [name_m]Rhett[/name_m], [name_m]Clay[/name_m], [name_u]Blake[/name_u], and [name_u]Rex[/name_u].
[name_u]Rex[/name_u] isn’t too doggish to me. I actually know 0 dogs named [name_u]Rex[/name_u] and 2 humans with this name.
[name_m]Clay[/name_m] wouldn’t bother me if my girl’s middle was [name_f]Mae[/name_f]. Middle names aren’t used much where I live and [name_m]Clay[/name_m] and [name_f]Mae[/name_f] both have distinctive sounds that differentiate each other.
[name_m]Rhett[/name_m], it’s a fine name and I wouldn’t think anything of it if I met another kid with this name. It’s not too uncommon that it’s weird, it is simply just less popular.
[name_u]Blake[/name_u] rhyming with Flake personally doesn’t bother me but it sounds like this one probably isn’t your first choice so I would scrap it.
Other ideas…
[name_m]Wyatt[/name_m]
[name_u]Beau[/name_u]
[name_m]Austin[/name_m]
[name_m]Heath[/name_m]
[name_m]Luke[/name_m]
[name_m]Colt[/name_m]/[name_m]Colton[/name_m]
I’ve wanted to like [name_m]Wyatt[/name_m] and [name_m]Colt[/name_m]/[name_m]Colton[/name_m] for a while now, but I can’t seem to get on board. Thank you!
My favorites are [name_m]Levi[/name_m], [name_u]Emmett[/name_u], [name_m]Des[/name_m], and [name_m]Jed[/name_m]. Maybe [name_m]Jed[/name_m] could work as a non-traditional nickname for a [name_m]Jonah[/name_m], [name_m]Josiah[/name_m], [name_m]Joshua[/name_m]?
My favourites are [name_m]Rhett[/name_m], [name_m]Levi[/name_m], [name_u]Blake[/name_u] and [name_u]Roscoe[/name_u] (it doesn’t sound too dog at all).
Other ideas:
[name_m]Colt[/name_m]
[name_m]Colton[/name_m]
[name_u]Memphis[/name_u]
[name_m]Weston[/name_m]
[name_u]Dallas[/name_u]
I really like [name_m]Dex[/name_m] for you. I think it might get to what you like about [name_m]Des[/name_m], [name_u]Rex[/name_u] and [name_m]Rhett[/name_m] without the associated negatives. And it feels very cowboy to me. I also second the suggestions of [name_m]Jonah[/name_m], [name_u]Walker[/name_u] and [name_u]Memphis[/name_u]!
I love [name_u]Jesse[/name_u]! It’s definitely not dated, it’s a classic that has remained in the top 200 in the US ever since records have been kept! I see how it might remind you of [name_f]Jessica[/name_f], but there are so many strong male role models with the name that its similarity to a girl’s name doesn’t take away any of its strength!
[name_m]Clay[/name_m] is great too, and a potential sibling with middle name [name_f]Mae[/name_f] doesn’t seem like a dealbreaker to me. (You could use [name_m]Clayton[/name_m] if it helps distinguish it from [name_f]Mae[/name_f], but [name_m]Clay[/name_m] is just as good on its own.)
I also think [name_m]Jed[/name_m] or [name_m]Zeb[/name_m] could stand on their own. You don’t necessarily have to use a long form.
I don’t think [name_u]Roscoe[/name_u] and [name_u]Rex[/name_u] are “too dog” to fit in with other names that are popular at the moment. People are using [name_m]Rufus[/name_m], [name_m]Milo[/name_m], [name_m]Bear[/name_m], and [name_m]Otis[/name_m] for babies, so [name_u]Roscoe[/name_u] and [name_u]Rex[/name_u] seem perfectly reasonable to me!
