Which spelling- Euan/Ewan?

Right now our top name for this baby is [name_m]Euan[/name_m], but we’re not 100% set on the spelling. I know in [name_f]Canada[/name_f]/US (where we live) [name_m]Ewan[/name_m] is the more recognisable spelling, but looking it up it seems like [name_m]Euan[/name_m] is actually the more common spelling in [name_f]Scotland[/name_f]. [name_m]Both[/name_m] are considered correct spellings. I prefer this spelling since I think it helps with pronunciation- I’ve asked on other boards full of non-name nerds who aren’t as familiar with this name how they would pronounce it, and the results were kind of disheartening. Over half would have pronounced it Ew-in, and I don’t want my kid getting called ‘Ew’ at school. (As for the rest, more people would have guessed Ee-wan, like Ewok with an N, than the correct pronunciation of Yoo-in.)

Anyway. Thoughts on one spelling over the other? FWIW we have a McLastname and the middle name will 95% be [name_u]Kelly[/name_u].

I think I would choose [name_m]Euan[/name_m]. It seems the better spelling to get the right pronunciation. For some reason when I see [name_m]Ewan[/name_m], I want to say “[name_u]Evan[/name_u]”. Maybe because I lived in [name_m]Hawaii[/name_m] for a while, and there is a popular beach on Oahu called [name_f]Ewa[/name_f] (pronounced Ev-uh).

Oh, and I do think [name_m]Euan[/name_m] [name_u]Kelly[/name_u] McLastname sounds greatl

[name_m]Euan[/name_m] is a bit more special

I prefer [name_m]Euan[/name_m], it both looks nicer to me, and makes pronunciation easier.

I prefer [name_m]Euan[/name_m], it looks cleaner, and you’re more likely to get the correct pronunciation. [name_m]Euan[/name_m] [name_u]Kelly[/name_u] is gorgeous!

[name_f]EDIT[/name_f]: [name_m]Just[/name_m] realised that [name_m]Ewan[/name_m] [name_m]McGregor[/name_m] spells his name with a W and everyone knows how to pronounce his name - just a point if you want to use the other spelling.

I’d pick [name_m]Euan[/name_m] over [name_m]Ewan[/name_m]. There’s also [name_m]Iwan[/name_m], the Welsh spelling but I can see how that’d cause more problems.

I would also go for [name_m]Euan[/name_m] - I like the streamlined look of it compared to [name_m]Ewan[/name_m], and know more people (Scottish, mostly!) with this spelling, so it should be alright to spell etc.

First, understand that you’re going to have to explain it to some people no matter which way you go. I would pick [name_m]Ewan[/name_m] because it’s more recognizable where you live. I really like [name_m]Ewan[/name_m].

I think [name_m]Ewan[/name_m] would have a lot less pronunciation issues. Most people are familiar with the name due to [name_m]Ewan[/name_m] [name_m]McGregor[/name_m], plus I personally think it’s more intuitive than [name_m]Euan[/name_m]. People generally have trouble guessing which the main vowel sound is in a string of vowels. I think the w makes it clearer.

That said, either is a fine choice. [name_f]Love[/name_f] the name.

Personally I prefer [name_m]Ewan[/name_m].

I prefer the look of [name_m]Ewan[/name_m] myself. It’s just the spelling I’m more familiar with in [name_f]Canada[/name_f].

I prefer [name_m]Ewan[/name_m] as well, most likely because of [name_m]Ewan[/name_m] [name_m]McGregor[/name_m].

I prefer [name_m]Euan[/name_m], I just think it looks much nicer. [name_m]Ewan[/name_m] looks a bit weird to me. It’s a great name

I love [name_m]Ewan[/name_m]. A beautiful name!

It’s interesting you bring that up- when I asked in the other forum, a good number of people commented ‘Huh, so that’s how it’s supposed to be pronounced! I always thought it was Ew-in.’!

I know no matter which spelling I use, people will have to be corrected. DS was playing with a little boy named [name_m]Ewan[/name_m]/[name_m]Euan[/name_m] at a play centre on [name_m]Saturday[/name_m] and I almost asked his mom how they spelled it and what (if any) pronunciation troubles they ran into, but decided not to be creepy!

[name_f]Love[/name_f] the name [name_m]Ewan[/name_m]! I would vote for [name_m]Ewan[/name_m] because it is more common where I live, but I think [name_m]Euan[/name_m] is also great. I am less familar with this spelling, but I had no problems with pronunciation (for whatever that is worth!).

I also want to add that this seems like a wonderful alternative for the super-popular [name_u]Owen[/name_u].

I am personally most familiar with [name_m]Ewan[/name_m] but absolutely didn’t know it was supposed to be pronounced you-in. However as soon as I read [name_m]Euan[/name_m], I pronounced it as such in my head, where as I would tend to say ew-in with the [name_m]Ewan[/name_m] spelling. So my vote is for [name_m]Euan[/name_m], seems more intuitive to me.

Beautiful with [name_m]Gareth[/name_m].
I strongly prefer [name_m]Euan[/name_m]. It’s softer, and [name_m]Ewan[/name_m] starts with “ew.”
There’s always Ywen, which I love, but it’s a bit eccentric and verging on fussy. It’s Welsh for “yew.”
Ywen Ke11y could be great with the double Ys… [name_m]Euan[/name_m] Ke11y also very handsome.
