I think the eye-ah pronunciation will get better responses with a name ending in H - like how we know [name_f]Maria[/name_f] is different from [name_f]Mariah[/name_f]. I voted wrong on the poll, but I think Auriah will likely be said ah-ry-ah because of how [name_f]Aurora[/name_f] is pronounced. With the distinct O sound, I would go for Oriah.
Definitely only Oriah for me, though I would prob say or- instead of oh-. But that’s the only one where I’d at least get the emphasis right, as well as the second syllable vowel sound!
I don’t think the Au- spellings get an oh- sound, they’re more like -uh. I agree with pp who said that the h at the end helps distinguish the vowel sound you’re looking for, like [name_f]Mariah[/name_f]. Oriah is pretty.
I’m okay with that. It wouldn’t really bother me if people thought it was OR-EYE-[name_m]AH[/name_m] or OH-[name_m]RYE[/name_m]-[name_m]AH[/name_m]… the difference is very subtle.
Oriah seems the easiest spelling to garner the right pronunciation since there are many other names that end in -iah and all sound as you want it said.
Oriah looks best to me.
Nope.
One of the things that gets lost as people search for their own special spelling of a name is that the English language actually works in a very specific way. The spelling you are looking for is Oriah.
You can argue, “It’s my name and so however I pronounce it is correct.” But if you spell it [name_f]Oria[/name_f] and pronounce it oh-[name_m]RYE[/name_m]-uh, you are mispronouncing it according to the rules of the language.
[name_f]Orya[/name_f] gets my vote. O + rya
It makes the most sense
[name_f]Do[/name_f] you definitely mean ‘oh-[name_m]RYE[/name_m]-a’ and not ‘AWR-ee-a’? If it’s the first case then it’s a name I’ve not heard before. Since people should know how to say the word pariah, then I’d recommend spelling it Oriah as the sounds are similar.
If you mean the name [name_f]Auria[/name_f] (awr-ee-a) then that’s how I’d spell it. The sound ‘Aw’ (or even ‘or’) is like in [name_u]August[/name_u].
There’s also [name_f]Araya[/name_f], which is pronounced ‘a-[name_m]RYE[/name_m]-a’. (a like cat).
I’m not looking for my “own special spelling”. It’s unfortunately one of those names were there are several cultural variations and, as a relatively unknown name, I would prefer the one where I could hope for the least issues with pronounciation.
Yes, definitely oh-[name_m]RYE[/name_m]-ah. Thanks, the general consensus was Oriah so I’m glad I asked for feedback as the spelling I came across was actually [name_f]Oria[/name_f].
I would pronounce [name_f]Araya[/name_f] a-[name_u]RAY[/name_u]-a, not a-[name_m]RYE[/name_m]-a - goes to show you can never guarantee what people will think when they see a name!
I love the name Oriah, but I pronounce it OR-EYE-UH, like [name_u]Orion[/name_u]. I think for that pronounciation you should go with an ‘ah’ sound at the end like gwensmom said about [name_f]Maria[/name_f]/[name_f]Mariah[/name_f].
Thanks @angelicaecb. The name I heard was pronounced oh-[name_m]RYE[/name_m]-ah, but after a pp mentioned or-EYE-ah, I think I might like that just a little bit more.
I spell it [name_f]Aria[/name_f]
I think Oriah would make the most sense.
