Whimsical Nature / Word Names - for Boys!

Looking to expand my nature / word name bank for boys. I thought I had a significant list going, but the current combo I’m working on rules about half of them out for one reason for another, so I’m running low on inspiration!

I love whimsical, magickal names, and don’t mind straying into hippie or fantasy territory. They don’t have to be fiercely boyish ([name_m]Talon[/name_m], [name_u]Falcon[/name_u], [name_u]Steele[/name_u], etc.) I can do unisex or softer names like [name_f]Wren[/name_f], [name_u]Sage[/name_u], or [name_m]Moss[/name_m].

Looking forward to seeing what you guys come up with! <3

I’m madly in love with [name_m]Quest[/name_m] and Tryst at the moment, but I’m not allowed to use them by Husband…

[name_u]Silver[/name_u]

[name_m]Valiant[/name_m]

…off the top of my head!

Wow! I really love all of these, but I do have some special favorites

Twin - No Tryst?? Really? But it’s so wonderful! [name_u]Silver[/name_u] and Equinox are swoonworthy, and I love Pisces…Husband, grandma, and three of our four parents are Pisces, so we’re quite the watery family!

[name_m]Coll[/name_m] - You have some really lovely ones here! [name_m]Wolf[/name_m] is on my short list as a middle for [name_m]Balthazar[/name_m], [name_u]Kai[/name_u] is my nn for [name_m]Malachi[/name_m], and [name_u]River[/name_u] is on my girls’ list. [name_m]Bear[/name_m], [name_m]Hawk[/name_m], [name_u]Orion[/name_u], [name_u]Sage[/name_u], and [name_m]Ronan[/name_m] are joining [name_u]Rowan[/name_u], [name_m]Fox[/name_m], [name_m]Peregrine[/name_m], and [name_m]Hawthorn[/name_m] on my long list. I’m always torn on [name_u]Phoenix[/name_u]. It’s a beautiful, edgy name and I love the mythology. But I always think of the city in [name_f]Arizona[/name_f] before the animal. Thank you so much for sharing your favorites!

Lis - You have some fun ones! [name_m]Banyan[/name_m], Fen, and [name_u]Ocean[/name_u] are really different! [name_m]Hawk[/name_m] is one of my favorites, but I don’t know that I can ever use him because our last name starts with a K. [name_u]Sorrel[/name_u] and [name_u]Yarrow[/name_u] keep popping on and off my list…I love them in theory, but somehow they lose their lustre when said aloud.

[name_m]Cooper[/name_m] - [name_m]Colt[/name_m] is so cool, isn’t he? I love the [name_m]Wild[/name_m] [name_u]West[/name_u] gunslinger vibe, and the Supernatural mythology only adds to the awesome. I want to love Monarch because of the butterfly, but I wonder if it’s not like naming a child [name_f]Princess[/name_f]. Apparently I’m cool with being a hippie, but not with being pretentious, haha! Bonsai is another I want to love, because of the tree, but I can just hear my Husband now shouting it as a YOLO cry before he does something stupid and dangerous. [name_u]Oak[/name_u], Teak, [name_f]Moon[/name_f], [name_u]Cedar[/name_u], [name_u]Cloud[/name_u], and [name_u]Shade[/name_u] are all wicked cool. [name_m]Bodhi[/name_m]! Oh how I love [name_m]Bodhi[/name_m]…the spiritual significance really endears the name to me, and I love the laid-back surfer vibe. He’s been on my list for a while now; just not sure where he fits.

Nature and word names are some of my favorites, so I love seeing what you guys find inspiring! This is really fun

Are some Danish/Scandinavian suggestions alright?

They’re not for everyone, but I thought I would give it a go, lol.

I love [name_f]Cricket[/name_f] for boys but I would never use it for a girl. I also like [name_u]Blaise[/name_u], [name_u]Ash[/name_u], [name_u]Reed[/name_u], [name_u]River[/name_u], [name_u]Robin[/name_u], [name_m]Peregrine[/name_m], [name_u]Orion[/name_u], [name_m]Scorpio[/name_m], [name_m]Leon[/name_m], and [name_u]Phoenix[/name_u]. [name_f]Do[/name_f] place names count? If so I would suggest [name_m]Caspian[/name_m] (which suggests water, A.K.A. [name_m]Caspian[/name_m] Sea), [name_u]Everest[/name_u] (which suggests mountains, A.K.A. Mount [name_u]Everest[/name_u]), [name_u]Nile[/name_u] (suggests water, A.K.A. [name_u]Nile[/name_u] [name_u]River[/name_u]), [name_u]Aspen[/name_u] (could be a tree name or a place name), [name_u]North[/name_u] (suggests cold whether and snow, also a word name), [name_u]Brooklyn[/name_u] (only with the nn [name_u]Brook[/name_u] or [name_m]Brooks[/name_m] would I consider it a nature/word name), [name_u]Hudson[/name_u] (suggests water, A.K.A. [name_u]Hudson[/name_u] [name_u]River[/name_u]), and [name_u]Harbor[/name_u] (again, suggests water).

[name_u]Cedar[/name_u]
[name_u]Everest[/name_u]
[name_u]Ocean[/name_u] or [name_m]Oisin[/name_m]

[name_m]Merlin[/name_m]
[name_m]Odin[/name_m]
[name_m]Percival[/name_m]
[name_m]Thor[/name_m] or Torr
[name_m]Zeus[/name_m]

Good luck!

[name_f]Zelia[/name_f] – Everything is alright! I think they’re beautiful names, and the ones I couldn’t use personally could be helpful to someone else  [name_m]Birk[/name_m], [name_m]Bjorn[/name_m], Falke, [name_f]Fjord[/name_f], Nord, and [name_m]Tyr[/name_m] are probably the most usable for me, although I make no promises for Husband’s affability. Thank you for expanding my horizons!

[name_f]Katey[/name_f] – [name_f]Cricket[/name_f] is adorable, it makes me think of A [name_f]Cricket[/name_f] in Times Square, which was one of my favorite books as a child. I love it as a nickname for [name_f]Catherine[/name_f], but I can never use the name [name_f]Catherine[/name_f] because of bad associations, so maybe it wouldn’t hurt to move [name_f]Cricket[/name_f] to the boys’ pile  [name_u]Orion[/name_u] is one of my guiltiest pleasures…I love the name SO much, but Husband refuses. Sigh. [name_m]Caspian[/name_m] is on my shortlist for a boy, and [name_u]River[/name_u] for a girl. I also like [name_u]Harbor[/name_u] and [name_u]North[/name_u] from your list; [name_u]Aspen[/name_u] as well, but it’s a bit similar to [name_m]Caspian[/name_m] and there’s also the “ass” part to worry about.

[name_f]Faith[/name_f] – Wow, this is a great list! I adore [name_m]Oisin[/name_m]: the soft sound, the beautiful meaning (little deer!), the mythology…but Husband will never go for it because the spelling isn’t intuitive for English speakers (and I could never murder the name by going with [name_m]Osheen[/name_m] or some such). [name_m]Wolf[/name_m] is another favorite, on our short list with [name_m]Balthazar[/name_m]. I want to love Lupus but I only think of the disease. I also want to love [name_u]Storm[/name_u], but I know Husband will just go straight to the X-Men character. I think [name_u]Cedar[/name_u], [name_u]Sage[/name_u], [name_m]Griffin[/name_m], [name_u]Rain[/name_u], [name_u]Cloud[/name_u], [name_m]Sol[/name_m], and [name_m]Thorn[/name_m] are all fabulous, and the ones that aren’t on the list will definitely be added! [name_f]Sable[/name_f] makes me swoon, but I already have [name_u]Fable[/name_u] on my shortlist, and I worry they’re too matchy. I kept vetoing the [name_u]Leaf[/name_u] suggestion, but when I saw it on your list, I remembered [name_m]Wash[/name_m] from Firefly and his “I’m a leaf on the wind” saying…so now it’s back up for consideration.

Thank you all so much!

Sleepysessha, sorry to highjack this thread, I would love to see your girls long list. [name_f]Do[/name_f] you happen to have a link to your lists?

Some overlaps here, but though I’d throw out my love for them too!

Zenith [name_u]Zephyr[/name_u]

This is called my long list because by the time runs the gauntlet of my Husband’s naming rules, it’s a very short list indeed! (Side note: I saw in your sig that you’re trying to decide whether to use [name_u]Emerson[/name_u] for a boy or girl…My vote is boy, because it means “son of [name_u]Emery[/name_u],” because I love softer names on boys, and because [name_m]Bodhi[/name_m] and [name_u]Emerson[/name_u] make a smashing set of brothers!)

Labelo – [name_u]Frost[/name_u] and [name_u]North[/name_u] are some of my favorite word names, I’ve been trying to get Husband to agree to one of them as [name_m]Caspian[/name_m]'s middle [name_u]FOREVER[/name_u]. He did agree to [name_m]Wolf[/name_m] for [name_m]Balthazar[/name_m] though! I also love Alder, [name_m]Fox[/name_m], and [name_u]Zephyr[/name_u] from your list, and [name_m]Shepherd[/name_m] intrigues me. [name_u]Winter[/name_u] is beautiful too, I just prefer it on a girl.

Thank you so much. This list is perfect. I am defintely leaning toward [name_u]Emerson[/name_u] for a boy. I feel my girl names, other than [name_f]Emersyn[/name_f], are more girly feeling.

I’ll throw in my sons names and our boys name list for your consideration as I think they fit your brief! [name_u]Vale[/name_u], [name_u]Flynn[/name_u], [name_u]Darby[/name_u], [name_m]Heath[/name_m], [name_u]Oakley[/name_u], [name_f]Briar[/name_f], [name_m]Rufus[/name_m], [name_u]Arlo[/name_u], [name_m]Rye[/name_m], [name_m]Breccan[/name_m] and [name_u]Sidney[/name_u]. [name_f]Hope[/name_f] that’s helpful, [name_u]Jessie[/name_u] x

I copied a list of word names once because I found it so exciting, though I wouldn’t really use all of these. I’ll try not to overlap too much.

[name_f]Answer[/name_f]

[name_m]Benevolent[/name_m] (I did have this on a middle name list at one point)
[name_m]Birch[/name_m]
Botany

[name_m]Bridge[/name_m]
[name_m]Burr[/name_m] (also [name_m]Burl[/name_m])

[name_u]Future[/name_u]
Gallant
[name_u]Gardener[/name_u] (this is on my long list)
[name_f]Generous[/name_f]
Gentle
[name_u]Glade[/name_u]
[name_f]Gravity[/name_f]
Guardian
Guide
[name_u]Halcyon[/name_u] (though I think like [name_f]Alcyone[/name_f] better, for a girl)
[name_u]Harbor[/name_u]
[name_m]Horizon[/name_m]
[name_u]Legend[/name_u]
Lively (also Life and Living)
[name_m]Meteor[/name_m]
[name_m]Navigator[/name_m]
[name_u]Pace[/name_u]
[name_m]Pine[/name_m]
[name_m]Power[/name_m]
[name_m]Prosper[/name_m]
[name_u]Quarry[/name_u]
[name_m]Ranger[/name_m]

[name_m]Stone[/name_m]
[name_f]Tarragon[/name_f]
[name_u]Timber[/name_u]
[name_u]Traveler[/name_u]

[name_f]Citron[/name_f], [name_f]Tarragon[/name_f] and [name_f]Sesame[/name_f] are on the list already, but when I’m thinking of whimsical word names I always end up thinking of herbs and spices. [name_m]Basil[/name_m], Chervil, [name_u]Bay[/name_u], [name_m]Valerian[/name_m], [name_u]Sage[/name_u], [name_f]Thyme[/name_f], Cardamom, [name_u]Clove[/name_u], Cumin, Coriander, [name_m]Mace[/name_m], and [name_f]Saffron[/name_f] I could easily see as names, and I’m sure there are more. Best of luck!

P.S. Hm. I skimmed over your girls’ list (loveliness!), but I should have read it more carefully, because I just noticed a couple of these suggestions there! I love some of your unusual choices paired with more “normal” nicknames, like [name_m]Horizon[/name_m] “[name_f]Zoe[/name_f]” and Echinacea “[name_u]Echo[/name_u].”

[name_f]Love[/name_f] – [name_f]Glad[/name_f] I could help! I’m loving your [name_u]Waverly[/name_u], [name_m]Bodhi[/name_m], and [name_m]Declan[/name_m] combos.

[name_u]Jessie[/name_u] – [name_f]LOVE[/name_f] [name_f]Briar[/name_f]! [name_m]Breccan[/name_m], [name_m]Rye[/name_m], [name_u]Flynn[/name_u], and [name_u]Arlo[/name_u] are fun as well. Your kids have some pretty sweet names!

[name_f]Aurora[/name_f] – [name_m]Aren[/name_m]'t word names the best? [name_m]Don[/name_m]‘t worry if a name shows up on my girls’ list…word and nature names are technically unisex, so I could see [name_f]Briar[/name_f], [name_u]River[/name_u], or [name_u]Rowan[/name_u] for example working equally well on a girl or a boy. So glad you like the nicknames! I love creative nicknames for normal names (like [name_f]Cricket[/name_f] for [name_f]Catherine[/name_f]) and more practical nicknames for creative names. What a fabulous long list you’ve got there! [name_m]Anchor[/name_m], [name_f]Arbor[/name_f], [name_u]Canyon[/name_u], Castle (like the author/TV show, haha), Dragon (am I brave enough…?), [name_u]Elm[/name_u], [name_u]Halcyon[/name_u], [name_u]Harbor[/name_u], [name_m]Horizon[/name_m] (come to think of it, this is probably way too close to [name_u]Zion[/name_u]), [name_m]Meteor[/name_m] (haha, I can see this being particularly applicable to a two year old!), [name_m]Ranger[/name_m] (too [name_m]Ranger[/name_m] [name_m]Rick[/name_m]?), [name_m]Rush[/name_m] ([name_f]LOVE[/name_f] because of [name_u]August[/name_u] [name_m]Rush[/name_m], but not sure how well it works [name_m]IRL[/name_m]), [name_u]Spruce[/name_u], and [name_u]Timber[/name_u] are all really cool! I’m right there with you on the herbs and spices! [name_m]Basil[/name_m], [name_m]Valerian[/name_m], [name_u]Sage[/name_u], [name_f]Thyme[/name_f], [name_u]Clove[/name_u], Coriander…I love them! [name_f]Saffron[/name_f] is one of my ultimate GP names for a girl (and it’s only a GP because Husband said absolutely no…he hates the chick from Firefly). Thanks so much for sharing!
