White trash names from Ted, WDYT?

Some yes, some no. I think it depends on personal association.

PS- I think he means [name]Earline[/name]/[name]Earleen[/name] not Urleen. This name pops up from time to time in the rural South, where I live. In fact, it is the name of [name]Barbara[/name] Mandrell’s sister. I had to wonder if the script writer was Southern, as I think some “trashiness” of names can be extremely regional…This would also explain [name]Channing[/name] and [name]Devin[/name]. We [name]LOVE[/name] our surnames here in South USA, and the upper class uses them on girls and boys, sometimes regardless of how they sound (girls and boys named Hinkley, Huxtable, Crusenberry, Gainer, [name]Glover[/name], etc.). What you often see is lower classes randomly pulling out a surname that is not quite as common like [name]Channing[/name] and [name]Devin[/name] (as compared to [name]Morgan[/name], [name]Sidney[/name], [name]Taylor[/name]), and using it to sound uppity with no link to their actual family tree… I’m not stereotyping to be hurtful- please see my post above- I wouldn’t dare! - just generalizing to help explain a few of the names on the list.

They’re all spot-on except [name]Cassandra[/name], [name]Channing[/name], [name]Claudia[/name] (?!?!?) and [name]Becky[/name].

Wow. I don’t consider any of these to be trashy. Lol All of the white trash that I live around have names like [name]Destiny[/name], [name]Crystal[/name], [name]Misty[/name], [name]Heather[/name], [name]Brittney[/name]…etc. And I live in a very rural [name]Louisiana[/name] town, for those who don’t know.

Disagree with that list…[name]Savannah[/name] and [name]Cassandra[/name] are definitely not white trash names !! Classy and beautiful if anything !!

Haha I love this! But yes I would use a few. Not all of these seem white trash…
[name]Samantha[/name]
[name]Autumn[/name]
[name]Ruby[/name]
[name]Noelle[/name]
[name]Claudia[/name]
[name]Chloe[/name]

I think [name]-Lynn names are quite trashy. I could add a few on here as well!

Would never use: [name]Marilyn[/name], [name]Brittany[/name], [name]Tiffany[/name], [name]Candice[/name], [name]Brandy[/name], [name]Heather[/name], [name]Channing[/name], [name]Briana[/name], [name]Amber[/name], [name]Melody[/name], [name]Dakota[/name], [name]Sierra[/name], [name]Bambi[/name], [name]Crystal[/name], [name]Autumn[/name], [name]Taylor[/name], [name]Tara[/name], [name]Tammie[/name], [name]Lauren[/name], [name]Charlene[/name], [name]Chantelle[/name], [name]Courtney[/name], [name]Misty[/name], [name]Jenny[/name], [name]Krista[/name], [name]Trina[/name], [name]Reba[/name], [name]Cassandra[/name], [name]Nikki[/name], [name]Kelsey[/name], [name]Shawna[/name], [name]Jolene[/name], Urleen, [name]Claudia[/name], [name]Savannah[/name], [name]Casey[/name], [name]Dolly[/name], [name]Kendra[/name], [name]Kylie[/name], [name]Devin[/name], [name]Emmalou[/name], [name]Brandi[/name]-[name]Lynn[/name], [name]Heather[/name]-[name]Lynn[/name], [name]Tammie[/name]-[name]Lynn[/name].

I actually like: [name]Mandy[/name], [name]Sabrina[/name], [name]Samantha[/name], [name]Ruby[/name], [name]Mindy[/name], [name]Noelle[/name], [name]Chloe[/name], [name]Becky[/name] - especially the bolded ones

The reason I wouldn’t use them doesn’t have to do with them being white-trash though–names like [name]Candice[/name], [name]Claudia[/name], [name]Chloe[/name], [name]Lauren[/name], [name]Cassandra[/name]–are very old and well respected names, I just don’t personally like most of them.

I agree that some, like [name]Brittany[/name], [name]Crystal[/name], [name]Bambi[/name], [name]Misty[/name]–have a bit of a down-market feel because they feel like “stripper names”.

Others are just more “southern” – [name]Savannah[/name], [name]Tammie[/name], [name]Emmalou[/name], [name]Dolly[/name], [name]Reba[/name], [name]Jolene[/name]

While some are very trendy sounding - [name]Kelsey[/name], [name]Kendra[/name], [name]Taylor[/name], [name]Channing[/name], [name]Kylie[/name], [name]Devin[/name]

And some are just a bit dated–[name]Marilyn[/name], [name]Heather[/name], [name]Briana[/name], [name]Amber[/name], [name]Shawna[/name]

So, in general, I think it’s a very muddled list full of names that are popular or not-popular for very different reasons and someone just threw them all together to get a laugh.

I didn’t see the movie [name]Ted[/name], but my friend had me watch the Youtube clip with [name]Mark[/name] Wahlberg running down the list of white trash names. My name is [name]Chloe[/name]. I chuckled the first time I heard the list. But now that I think about it… It’s not so funny to me. In fact, I’m a little offended.

Being neither white nor trash, I don’t want to be associated with white trash. In fact, I can’t even name a white trash [name]Chloe[/name]. [name]Even[/name] [name]Khloe[/name] Kardashian isn’t white or really trashy (a fame whore… yes). I’m not sure from where that association stems.

Furthermore, can you imagine if a box office hit movie had run a “[name]Black[/name] Ghetto Girl” list of names!!! People would be outraged! But it’s okay to call my name white trash?!! Oh… okay…

OH… AND name me [name]ONE[/name] white trash Urleen. I challenge you. In fact, name me ANY Urleen! Where did they get that?!!

My own name ([name]Brittany[/name]) is on the list and I’d have to say I agree with it being on there–to an extent. In my opinion, it’s less of any of these names being “trashy”, as it is that the majority of them contain social stigma’s. For example, I’ve met some very smart [name]Brittany[/name]'s over the years who have broken the stereotypical “[name]Brittany[/name]” mold. However, the majority that I’ve personally come in contact with haven’t exactly projected a sense of enlightenment; therefore feeding into the stereotype. I don’t believe that would (or should) subject any of these names (or any name for that matter) to be called trashy. I personally find that to be a bit harsh, but that’s solely my opinion.

I don’t mean for this to be directed at OP or offend anyone. I just find it to be disheartening for any name to be called trashy in general. Perhaps it’s because I would much rather judge someone based on the content of their character than the name they were given.

I’m cringing in a corner because my name was on there and I’d like to believe I’m as far from white trash, redneck hick as possible (denial?). But I also see a lot of popular 90’s names, so I think there’s a reason for why most of them were picked.

[name]Mandy[/name]: [name]Mandi[/name] with an i feels trashier. [name]Mandy[/name] feels more like a nickname for [name]Amanda[/name]
[name]Marilyn[/name]: [name]Monroe[/name].
[name]Brittany[/name]: More like 1980’s born pretty popular girl, but bland.
[name]Tiffany[/name]: see [name]Brittany[/name]. But throw in a bit of [name]Gretchen[/name] Weiners.
[name]Candice[/name]: I don’t get this name at all. But it still feels more city prep wanna be than trashy.
[name]Brandy[/name]: Okay, this does feel trashy.

[name]Sierra[/name]: well…I do know a teen mom by this name…
[name]Bambi[/name]: seriously? HE’S A DEER.
[name]Crystal[/name]: another name I liked as child. [name]Krystal[/name] seems trashier though.
[name]Samantha[/name]: it’s classic.
[name]Autumn[/name]: circa 2004 hipster-ish
[name]Ruby[/name]: circa 2008 hipster
[name]Taylor[/name]: You’d think this name would be, but all the Taylors I know are pretty and blonde.
[name]Tara[/name]: no. [name]Just[/name] no. This name is beautiful.
[name]Tammie[/name]: ugh.
[name]Lauren[/name]: another classic.
[name]Charlene[/name]: yuck.
[name]Chantelle[/name]: yuck.
[name]Courtney[/name]: YES. I’ve never met a [name]Courtney[/name] I liked.
[name]Misty[/name]: I’ve used this name for a character I liked once and she wasn’t trashy. She was crazy, but not trashy.
[name]Jenny[/name]: I knew a trashy girl by this name but the name itself isn’t.
[name]Krista[/name]: yes.
[name]Mindy[/name]: yes
[name]Noelle[/name]: no.
[name]Shelby[/name]: I swear, I’m not trashy in the least!
[name]Trina[/name]: I’m not sure if this is supposed to be [name]Tina[/name] or something else. Yes.
[name]Reba[/name]: yes.
[name]Cassandra[/name]: another classic and favorite!
[name]Nikki[/name]: yes.
[name]Kelsey[/name]: an ugly [name]Madison[/name]-esque name, but so far not trashy.
[name]Shawna[/name]: yes.
[name]Jolene[/name]: seriously?
Urleen: yes.
[name]Claudia[/name]: no.
[name]Savannah[/name]: no.
[name]Casey[/name]: yes.
[name]Dolly[/name]: yes.
[name]Kendra[/name]: no.
[name]Kylie[/name]: yuck.
[name]Chloe[/name]: no
[name]Devin[/name]: this is a boy’s name.
[name]Emmalou[/name]: go with [name]Emmeline[/name], or [name]Emma[/name], or [name]Emmy[/name].
[name]Becky[/name]: no.
[name]Brandi[/name]-[name]Lynn[/name]: yes.
[name]Heather[/name]-[name]Lynn[/name]: yes.
[name]Tammie[/name]-[name]Lynn[/name]: yes.
anything-[name]Lynn[/name]: making my name double-trashy since the 90’s. Dammnit Mom and Dad.

Wow. I just posted what the movie, [name]Ted[/name] said. You can’t seriously be mad at me?! Oh well, either way ;).

@beautiful_haiku - If [name]Khloe[/name] Kardashian isn’t white, what is she? Her father was Armenian and her mother is Scottish-Dutch. That classifies as “white” or “Caucasian” in my book. As far as whether she is trashy or not, that’s up for debate.

I think the whole Kardashian clan are trashy…

My name was on the list… And on someone’s “ageed trashy” list… Offended…certainly!

Um… I’ve always looked at her as more bi-cultural/Biracial. It would be up to her to classify herself. She might indeed call herself white.

To call her white would be like calling someone with Nigerian parents “black.” To me they would be Nigerian American or if the other parent was of a different ethnicity, Biracial.

I’d also like to say that this whole classifying some names as “trashy” or “chav” or “downmarket” is one of the ongoing themes that bugs me about Nameberry. [name]Even[/name] a name like [name]Sarah[/name] that most Nameberries would proclaim as being “oh so traditional and classy” can seem trashy if on a trashy person (I’m thinking of a particular American “political” figure).

I used to classify names as well, but have less so since spending more time on Nameberry. [name]Imagine[/name] spending so much time choosing a name for your new bundle of joy and then hearing or seeing people trash it. It’s actually hurtful when I really think about it. And really I’m not out to hurt people and classify them as “white trash” just based on a name.

[name]Seth[/name] MacFarlane’s sense of humor is meant to be offensive. Its also meant to push limits and cross lines that shouldn’t be crossed. Some people will like it, others won’t. I thought it was funny, although I do agree that most of the names on that list are perfectly good names.

So if your daughter’s name [name]Serenity[/name] was on the “white trash” list, you would laugh? Or your own name?

I guess I never realized my name would be considered white trash ([name]Sierra[/name]). I’m not offended just a little perplexed. I’d guess that popularity might have something to do with it.
