I’ve been thinking about [name_f]Esme[/name_f] a lot lately; I love her “esteemed and loved” meaning, and love that she could honor my grandmother (whose middle name was Mae) - she’s familiar now but not rabidly popular… but I’ve always struggled with what Esme’s personality is. What would you expect a little [name_f]Esme[/name_f] to be like?
And bonus question, what middles would you recommend with her? I’ve been toying around with [name_f]Esme[/name_f] [name_f]Livia[/name_f] or [name_f]Esme[/name_f] [name_f]Philomena[/name_f], but I’m open to other ideas.
i love esme! I like both the ez-mee and ez-may pronounciations. i picture an esme in two ways:
one is the sweetest little girl who is always smiling and wears little pigtails as she skips along the street, playing hopscotch and eating watermelon by the pool in summer. all of the locals know her and she can get anything she wants through her big eyes and gorgeous personality. she loves playing games and splashing in the waves at the beach and instantly becomes friends with everyone she meets
another is the calm, shy little esme. she loves reading and playing with her dolls in her bedroom. she gets shy meeting people, but when she warms up to you she is fun and loving. she is very pretty and has long hair that she fiddles with when she meets new people. she has a gentle soul and can make anyone feel better

I love [name_f]Esme[/name_f]. Such a warm, sweet name with of course an amazing meaning. [name_m]Little[/name_m] [name_f]Esme[/name_f] to me is a caring, absolutely kind, a little reserved and sensitive child. I imagine one who likes to wear floral frocks, play swings, pick wildflowers and read. Perhaps artsy too.
I think using [name_f]Esme[/name_f] is creative, lovely way to honour [name_f]Mae[/name_f].
[name_f]Esme[/name_f] to me is for a late bloomer: smart and observant as a child, funny/wry, informant and artistic as an adult. Good values, unwavering but in a quiet way. [name_m]Just[/name_m] herself!

I use the Scottish pronunciation of [name_f]Esme[/name_f] so I kind of think of the ‘wild beauty’ aesthetic and associations I mentally attach to a lot of Gaelic / Celtic girls names, but I think that’s tempered somewhat with the soft and gentle esme - so more cottagecore and domesticated - I think wildflower meadows, cottages / croft houses, kitchen gardens, natural materials like linen, wicker, cotton, notebooks, plaited hair. I don’t really like attaching personalities to names as I think it can be limiting, but if I had to the bookish yet strongwilled qualities another pp mentioned is pretty spot on for what I’d think of - beautiful and thoughtful introversion yet admirably willful and knows her own mind.

I first came across Esme years ago when I was reading LM Montgomery stories. I believe that she was in a ghost story, so she has an otherworldly feel for me. She’s very feminine, quiet, and wise. But most of all she is kind and empathetic.
