Why are non-blue dogs named Blue?

I keep meeting lovely red and brown and white dogs named [name_u]Blue[/name_u]. [name_m]Just[/name_m] wondering…

Is there such a thing as a blue dog?

Well, not literally but there are a number of dogs called blues, which have black, white, and grey speckled markings which make them look a bit blue. Queensland [name_u]Blue[/name_u] Australian cattle dogs for instance or blue hounds or blue merle Australian Shepherds.

I’ve had and loved a number of blues, so it just makes me wonder. Kind of like meeting a white dog named Purple.

[name_m]Ah[/name_m] ok I’m more of a cat person, I know there is the Russian [name_u]Blue[/name_u] cat but didn’t realise there were ‘blue’ dogs too.

Maybe lots of people just like the name [name_u]Blue[/name_u]. As it’s a little out-there for a person, they use it on their dogs instead. Or maybe the dogs have blue eyes?
