Why is Francine popular on nameberry?

I don’t mean to be offensive, but I really do want to know.

To me, it is one of the ugliest names imaginable. It sounds made up. It is dated. Declasse is I believe what nameberry once called it.

I identify with [name_m]French[/name_m] culture but [name_f]Francine[/name_f] does not summon that up for me. [name_m]Just[/name_m] look at your face in the mirror when you say it – that is not pretty either.

I am open to illumination.

There’s a pretty good thread about this already: Francine

Also, I’ve never noticed that it’s really all that popular. Certainly liked by some, but not necessarily a nameberry favorite. Some like it, some don’t.

I haven’t noticed that either, but I like it from American Dad.

Thanks, I will check it out!

[name_f]Francine[/name_f] is popular on Nameberry? What? I’ll go check that thread out now.

I don’t like [name_f]Francine[/name_f] at all either.
As a person living in a country where half of the population speaks [name_m]French[/name_m] (Belgium), I know and hear a lot of [name_m]French[/name_m] names. And let me tell you, [name_f]Francine[/name_f] is not popular or trendy here. In fact, I only know one [name_f]Francine[/name_f], and she recently celebrated her 80th birthday.
Some people on this site seem to think that because a name is [name_m]French[/name_m] and ends in -ine, it is pretty and exotic, while in fact many of those names (for example [name_f]Sabine[/name_f], [name_f]Claudine[/name_f], [name_f]Martine[/name_f], [name_f]Carine[/name_f], [name_f]Sandrine[/name_f],…) are rather outdated, formerly popular names, common among middle-aged and retired women.
So if you want something [name_m]French[/name_m] that is also trendy, do your homework

I personally like the name [name_f]Francine[/name_f]. It is on my top 10 list. I love the sound of it. I also love the sound of [name_f]Celine[/name_f] and [name_f]Delphine[/name_f]. It sounds soft and soothing to me.

I like [name_f]Francesca[/name_f] [name_m]WAY[/name_m] better. [name_f]Francine[/name_f] makes me think of a stereotypical Queens woman. And the name isn’t cute at all, I don’t know why it’s so popular on here. To each their own, I suppose.

I love the name [name_f]Francine[/name_f]. I don’t like it b.c I think it is [name_m]French[/name_m] or trendy, I love it b.c it makes me think of [name_f]Francine[/name_f] [name_u]Reed[/name_u], an amazing blues singer. It sounds bold and audacious to me. I like [name_u]Francis[/name_u], too, but only for a boy. And I like [name_f]Francesca[/name_f] b.c I once knew a beautiful ballerina named [name_f]Francesca[/name_f].

Oh, [name_f]Francine[/name_f] is on my top 25! I love it mostly because it’s one of those clunky but cool old lady names coming back like [name_f]Sophia[/name_f], [name_f]Hazel[/name_f] or [name_f]Rose[/name_f]. I’d definately consider using it.

No idea. I think it’s an ugly name too.

[name_f]Francine[/name_f] has always been one of my favorites. I had a beautiful french maid doll named [name_f]Francine[/name_f] when I was little. I love the name for its meaning and also for the association with my grandfather. It has a lot of sex appeal in my book!

A lot of berries like what mickie86 called clunky old lady names. I put [name_f]Francine[/name_f] up there next to other names like [name_f]Beatrice[/name_f], [name_f]Harriet[/name_f], and [name_f]Edith[/name_f], which also get a lot of love on NB. It’s a style that’s particularly popular right now with the whole hipster/vintage/throwback/slightly nerdy thing that’s in with fashion, love for handcrafted items (Etsy, anyone?), vintage-style weddings, and love for shows like Mad Men. It’s a trend that goes far beyond naming.

I don’t think [name_f]Francine[/name_f] is popular on Nameberry. I remember a couple of threads from expectant moms regarding the name and a couple of people actually chose it for their daughters but I wouldn’t say it’s popular like other vintage names. It’s actually quite pretty in a [name_m]French[/name_m] accent so I don’t find it ugly. I find [name_u]Brooklyn[/name_u] more harsh and unattractive in sound than [name_f]Francine[/name_f] and I would rather meet this little [name_m]French[/name_m] miss than a more contemporary named child. Whatever floats your boat!

I know that I’ve said a few times now on this site how much I [name_f]LOVE[/name_f] the name [name_f]Francine[/name_f]. I think it’s gorgeous! It’s my little neice’s name and she is the most precious little darling! We call her Cici and my uncle calls her Frenchie  (sooo cute!) It is one of my favorite names because it reminds me of her, the sweetest little rosey cheeked child to light up a room!

Exactly this. I don’t live in a [name_m]French[/name_m]-speaking country, but I have family from [name_f]France[/name_f] and a lot of the [name_m]French[/name_m] names that are popular here are like… names of my grandmother’s friends. I think it’s quite funny actually.

I think so much depends on when you were born. My mom would be horrified by this name but she was born in the 40s and so it sounds dated to her. I like it because it sounds fresher to me than say [name_f]Francesca[/name_f]. I also tend to like names that aren’t too popular but have history, possibility of nicknames and sound like they could be written on a resume. This one fits for me. Although I wouldn’t probably use it (don’t love it, just like it), I would so much rather see this name on a baby girl than the way over used but popular, [name_f]Isabella[/name_f], [name_f]Sophia[/name_f], [name_f]Kaitlyn[/name_f], [name_f]Lily[/name_f], [name_f]Ava[/name_f], etc…

Yeah, I think it’s this.

I think [name_f]Francine[/name_f] is ugly. Ditto [name_f]Mavis[/name_f], [name_f]Beatrice[/name_f], [name_f]Harriet[/name_f], [name_f]Olive[/name_f], [name_f]Enid[/name_f], [name_f]Edith[/name_f], and many others. [name_m]Just[/name_m] yuck. I love some of the retro names, but only the ones that were already pretty, eg [name_f]Lillian[/name_f], [name_f]Lucille[/name_f], [name_f]Lily[/name_f], [name_f]Ivy[/name_f], [name_f]Rosie[/name_f], [name_f]Daisy[/name_f], [name_f]May[/name_f], etc.

(Then again, I’m not sure I’m a very good 'berry, as I also loathe the much-adored [name_f]Genevieve[/name_f] and [name_f]Penelope[/name_f]. I’d name a child [name_f]Francine[/name_f] over either of those, in a hearbeat.)
