Why is Goldie getting so much hate?

Hi there!

I know when I’ve found a name I love the last thing I should do is read every negative post about it, ever. But my third trimester insomnia couldn’t be tamed and here I am.

I love the name Goldie. I am an Ashkenazi Jew and the name ties to it. I also find it a bit funky, familiar but unique. The name seems to be polarizing. Some call it tacky or a dog’s name, some too nickename-y, but some love it.

Specifically thinking of using “Goldie Eloise” as a way to honor a grandmother with an E name.

The damage has been done - I’m already second guessing myself. Am I making a mistake with planning to use Goldie Eloise?

[name_f]Goldie[/name_f] isn’t my style but I don’t think there’s anything objectively wrong with it. I can appreciate how uncommon and fresh the name is, and I think it’s sweet with [name_f]Eloise[/name_f].

I love [name_f]Goldie[/name_f]. But if I were to use it I would probably use the name [name_f]Marigold[/name_f] with [name_f]Goldie[/name_f] as a NN. I’m a preschool teacher and one of my past children’s little sister was named [name_f]Marigold[/name_f] but was only ever called [name_f]Goldie[/name_f] and I’ve loved it ever since.

I would never criticize someone’s name choice unless the name had serious negative/insensitive associations. Most names I dislike are just not my style.

Since you made this post, I’m assuming you want honest opinions on the name [name_f]Goldie[/name_f]. It isn’t my style. I like it as a cute family nickname but I can’t see it fitting a teenager or an adult.

That being said, I’m not a fan of cute, nickname sounding names in general because I feel like picking a full, more formal name makes more sense and it gives the barer more choice as they get older. (For example, I’m a huge fan of both [name_u]Billie[/name_u] and [name_f]Birdie[/name_f] as nicknames but would never consider using them as a full name).

At the same time, I don’t think there’s anything wrong with [name_f]Goldie[/name_f]. The opinions of a few people on the internet shouldn’t put you off giving your baby a name you like, especially if the name is tied to your roots. If you love it, you should use it.

[name_f]Edit[/name_f]: I agree with @Becv on [name_f]Marigold[/name_f]!

I love [name_f]Goldie[/name_f], I think it’s so sweet and sunny sounding. I’ve heard it used a couple times (in Aus) while not super popular wouldn’t be an unheard of choice and goes with the nickname name trend that is very popular here and the UK

I love Goldie! I find it so sweet and cheeful. Goldie Eloise is seriously one of the best combos I’ve heard lately. I could definitely see it on all ages. If not Goldie, than Marigold “Goldie” is also cute. But if you prefer Goldie, stick to Goldie.

I can understand why people not be the biggest fans of [name_f]Goldie[/name_f], it does read very sweet and frilly which isn’t for everyone, however, no name is. All parents have different rules for naming their children and as long as the name isn’t offensive or harmful for the child, you should be able to choose whatever name you like.

I personally would say it’s not my style because it does currently have such a dog name feel to it. But I don’t actually find it too unusable… because after dog name my two thoughts are [name_f]Goldie[/name_f] Hawn. And my other thought is of [name_u]Carson[/name_u] [name_u]Daly[/name_u] who in recent years named his daughter [name_f]Goldie[/name_f]. So it kind of has an older generation usu ability and newer one as well…. If you like it use it!

I think it’s sweet, even if it’s not my style  In the UK there’s also a character on a soap opera named Goldie!

The concept of “this name doesn’t age well” is starting to become outdated imo, because nowadays there’s plenty of kids named Ellie, Elsie, Jaxx, Sonny, etc. and those kids will be adults in future. For their generation, no one will bat an eye at an adult named something along those lines. :woman_shrugging:t3: Just like in past ones, I’m sure names like Jennifer and Heather, or Ashley and Hailey or Brooklyn and Kylie were probably thought to be odd choices for an adult too.

I really like [name_f]Goldie[/name_f]. Particularly as a nn for [name_f]Marigold[/name_f] but I think it’s fine on its own too. It gives me the same vibes as [name_f]Birdie[/name_f] or [name_f]Queenie[/name_f]. If you love the name then go for it! :yellow_heart:

I love Goldie. I think it’s absolutely to die for. I would 100% use it in a heart beat.

My bf thinks it sounds like more a pet name, but with more and more pets having human names ,like Kevin or Jackson, I am ready to argue that the line between pet/human names is getting more and more blurred.

Secondly, Goldie fits the style of a “nickname name” which it seems like people either like or they don’t. It’s just not their cup of tea, it’s not their shot of whiskey and that’s fine.

To summarize my novel, Goldie is not a name that’s offensive, harmful, or a name that would hinder your daughters life in any way so if you love it and it feels like the right name for her then you should go for it. Not everybody is going to like your name and that’s fine, everybody has different tastes and that’s just the way it is.

I hope this makes you feel better :relaxed:

Edited to add: I am willing to defend the name Goldie to my last dying breath.

Ahhh why do people not like Goldie?! I LOVE it! Girls names ending in ‘ie’ are definitely a thing right now and I think [name_f]Goldie[/name_f] fits right in. It is sweet, sunny, and the right amount of vintage but still modern! I don’t think you need a “full” name for it either. I know little girls with the names [name_f]Hattie[/name_f], [name_f]Ellie[/name_f], [name_f]Birdie[/name_f] and [name_f]Sadie[/name_f] all as stand alone names. [name_f]My[/name_f] daughter’s name is [name_u]Indie[/name_u] and before she was born someone told me it was a dogs name. I’m glad I used it anyways. Pick the name you love! The internet will always have negative opinions about any and every name! [name_f]Goldie[/name_f] [name_f]Eloise[/name_f] is stunning!

[name_f]Goldie[/name_f] [name_f]Eloise[/name_f] is gorgeous :sparkles:

[name_f]Goldie[/name_f] is lovely a really bright spirited name that sounds energetic and fun. I think [name_f]Goldie[/name_f] is lovely also a perfect name for a child of Ashkenazi Jewish heritage however I do understand if people find the name a little juvenile or if the name isn’t their style. Ultimately people allowed to have personal preference I wouldn’t allow that to put you off the name. [name_f]My[/name_f] daughter is [name_f]Lilia[/name_f] I’ve received some negative responses concerning her name but that’s their opinion they are entitled to that opinion. Me I absolutely love [name_f]Lilia[/name_f] I think she’s perfect. [name_m]Just[/name_m] like you absolutely love [name_f]Goldie[/name_f]. I think [name_f]Eloise[/name_f] is a delightful middle name for [name_f]Goldie[/name_f] very bright and charming with a preppy fun sound. A pretty name to honour your grandmother.

I love [name_f]Goldie[/name_f] [name_f]Eloise[/name_f] is beautiful. You love it go for it. Ignore the haters
