Why the hate of Imogene?

I have a very un-berry confession: i love [name]Imogene[/name].

I know the general berry consensus is that [name]Imogen[/name] is lovely and [name]Imogene[/name] is icky.

Why?

When I envision [name]Imogen[/name] I see a buttoned up, prim & proper girl wearing stiff mary-janes in the snow, but when i envision [name]Imogene[/name] I see a girl running through a field of tall grass in the hot summer sunshine.

I prefer the latter, easier going vision.

What do you berries think? Is there an image of [name]Imogene[/name] that prevails, that I’m just not aware of?

I find it very pretty to be honest, though I prefer [name]Imogen[/name] as it feels a little more sharp. I think it has this image because its seen as old lady ish (well in the states it is).

I just prefer the ‘jen’ ending to the ‘jean’ ending.

To me, and sorry it’s going to sound harsh, but [name]Imogene[/name] sounds so hickish to me. I have the same “beautiful girl running through a field, playing and using her imagination” image for [name]Imogen[/name] as you have for [name]Imogene[/name]. [name]Imogen[/name] to me sounds like [name]Imagine[/name] and makes me think of a little fairy girl frolicking in the sun.

Now, the lovely image I have for [name]Imogene[/name] is from [name]Fried[/name] [name]Green[/name] Tomatoes and that [name]Imogene[/name] nn Idgie is a super great association, so I don’t hate it, just the sound of it if that makes sense.

dantea- I see where you’re coming from with hickish (no offense taken at all!) but i kinda see [name]Imogene[/name] as so old-school country that it’s cool again, like [name]Abner[/name] or [name]Selby[/name].

I think I just can’t shake this starched, british feeling I have about about [name]Imogen[/name], and I’m not even sure where I got this image.

For me [name]Imogene[/name] just has this southern breezy feel. Again, no idea where i got these associations!

I guess I’ll just resign myself to be the odd berry

Any other comments?

You’re not the only one who feels that way. I [name]LOVE[/name] [name]Imogene[/name] and vastly prefer it to [name]Imogen[/name]. Maybe we are just ahead of the style curve

I cannot figure out how to pronounce either name, I love the meaning but I can’t get behind the sound of the name

Me too! Imma-jen, [name]Emma[/name]-jin, Image-een?

Hate is a strong word. I like [name]Imogen[/name] because it’s spunky, fun, quirky, very sweet and beautiful. [name]Imogene[/name] sounds lazy and drawling and not at all charming. A bit annoying really.

[name]Imogen[/name] is pronounced IM-uh-jen, and [name]Imogene[/name] IM-uh-jeen.

I don’t really like [name]Imogen[/name] or [name]Imogene[/name]. I don’t understand the hype about [name]Imogen[/name]. It sounds…well, weird.
[name]Imogene[/name] would probably would be one of my favorite names if I didn’t have horrible associations with it.
I have to agree, [name]Imogen[/name] is more modern-sounding than [name]Imogene[/name], but I like [name]Imogene[/name]‘s old-fashioned, cowgirl aura. [name]Imogen[/name] overall is more suited to today’ s parent’s tastes, although this is debatable.

I think [name]Imogene[/name] is super cute. I still remember a book I read as a little kid called “[name]Imogene[/name]'s Antlers,” featuring a blonde, rosy-cheeked girl. I liked the name then as well! [name]Imogen[/name] doesn’t have the same appeal for me. I’m trying to put my finger on why exactly, since I want to be helpful, but I can’t quite place it.

I’m with you, juliet!

Edit: In fact, I am adding Imogene to my list. Ha!

Hurrah! It’s so nice to hear other berries share my love of [name]Imogene[/name], I thought i was alone!

Any other names yall like that go against the berry grain?

I like both! I didn’t realize I had to choose, lol.

I do like [name]Imogen[/name] (how Nameberry of me!) but it is more British/Commonwealths sounding to me. It is in the Top 100 here in Australia and has a tailored sound. It allows for [name]Gen[/name]/[name]Genny[/name] as a nickname, which I think sounds sweet. And I like [name]Vivien[/name] and [name]Branwen[/name] and similar girls names that are feminine but frilly. [name]Imogen[/name] has the Shakespearean cred, too.

[name]Imogene[/name] has a country sound, but a very old 1880s-1930s country sound, not modern-redneck sound to it, to me. And [name]Fried[/name] [name]Green[/name] Tomatoes makes me think of a spunky little country girl. [name]Gene[/name] as a nickname makes me think of Old Hollywood [name]Gene[/name] [name]Tierney[/name] (I know [name]Jean[/name] is typically the female spelling but she was a [name]Gene[/name]…) and I doubt I would ever use [name]Gene[/name]/[name]Jean[/name] as a given name but I don’t mind it as a nickname, though I like [name]Gen[/name] slightly more.

[name]Imogene[/name] is one of the VERY few “-een sound” names I really like. I would not be game to revive [name]Eileen[/name], for instance.

As an American married to an Aussie, my husband thinks [name]Imogene[/name] looks “weird” and my American mother actually insists [name]Imogen[/name] is “made-up” so basically I can’t please anybody, even though I love both.

I’m not a fan of either at all. I really don’t understand the hype about [name]Imogen[/name], it just sounds very strange and not like a name to me. I always feel like I’m saying “imagine” wrong or it’s some kind of medicine. [name]Imogene[/name] sounds more ‘old lady’ to me, I don’t like the ‘gene’ sound.

I am totally biased as one of my twins is named [name]Imogen[/name] [name]May[/name] which i suppose you will all say is a filler middle name too lol but we call her mimi may and she suits it well. Shes very peite with a little button nose and dark blonde hair. She is a little ballerina, never stops dancing. [name]Imogen[/name] actually means image of her mother - funny as she looks just like me and im a ballet teacher so she is defo a mini me where as her sister looks more like her daddy and is not so dainty on her feet lol.

We thought about about [name]Imogene[/name] aswell but thought it looked like a typo and people would automatically say imogen anyway. here in england its a heard of name but not currently very popular so luckily i dnt teach any imogens and there wont be another one in her class at school

Anyways as long as you like the name thats all that matters adding the e does give it a little more flare!

I’m not fond of either of the names, I do however prefer the sound of [name]Imogen[/name] (but [name]Imogene[/name] looks more complete in a way).

Like others, I’m just not fond of the -jeen- sound. There are very few names with that sound I can tolerate, [name]Eugenie[/name] being the only one that comes to mind. Looking some more, [name]Regina[/name] is the only other one, and I only like it because of [name]Regina[/name] Spektor.

However, I’m not fond of [name]Imogen[/name] either, even though I prefer it to [name]Imogene[/name]. It sounds very sharp to me, piercing.

Same here.

I love [name]Imogene[/name]! Perhaps it has something to do with the beloved children’s storybook, [name]Imogene[/name]'s antlers. Maybe not the best association for most people but I always thought of an extremely imaginative little girl whenever I read it as a kid.
[name]Imogen[/name] has no history with me and I think it sounds a little abrupt.

[name]Imogene[/name] was born from mispronunciation [name]Imogen[/name], that’s why I don’t like it.
