Are both [name]Wiley[/name] and [name]Wylie[/name] legitimate spellings?
I just ran across this and really like it for a little girl. To me, the spelling [name]Wylie[/name] looks quite trendy and creative.

Yep, they are both legitimate. One is English and one is Scots-Irish. As a surname, [name]Wylie[/name] is more common in parts of the southeast, but [name]Wiley[/name] is more common nationally.
However, [name]Wiley[/name] is really a dude’s name, [name]IMO[/name].
I knew a girl from a family of three girls with the name [name]Wylie[/name]. Sisters [name]Gretchen[/name] and [name]Deirdre[/name]. Always LOVED their names while growing up.
[name]Wylie[/name] is one of those girl names [name]IMO[/name] that I love like [name]Ainsley[/name], [name]Brinley[/name] etc …
Maybe since my name is [name]Lesley[/name] I always think the -ley “place” names are girl names.
Great choice!!
[name]Wiley[/name]/[name]Wylie[/name] is masculine to me. I always have preferred [name]Wiley[/name] though. It is a diminutive of [name]William[/name]. I think it definitely sounds too trendy on a girl (another one of those [name]Kylie[/name], [name]Miley[/name], [name]Riley[/name], etc.).
I had a friend who had this as a middle name (spelled [name]Wylie[/name], which I prefer on a girl). Associations change over time, of course, but she hated it because of the strong association with a certain coyote. It might work better as a first name though, since she’d use it more and that would wear out the looney-tunes fears.
Good point.
For me, a name that ends in a -lee or -lyn, sounds feminine. [name]Just[/name] my ears.
Thank you all for your help.
I’ve always thought of [name]Wiley[/name] as a boy’s name and [name]Wylie[/name] as a girl’s name.
My mom’s name is [name]Wylie[/name]…[name]LOVE[/name] IT!!!
but I also know someone whose dad’s name is [name]Wylie[/name]…
Like it better for a girl…but maybe I am biased.
[name]Wylie[/name] is actually my mom’s middle name but since birth her mother always called her [name]Wylie[/name].
Good [name]Luck[/name].
averyvirginia - I am TOTALLY with you that a name ending in -lee (or -ley) and -lyn are girl names. [name]Just[/name] my opinion that when my ears hear that, I think girl.
If I met a little girl and asked what her name was and she said “[name]Wiley[/name]” I would assume that she cannot pronounce her R’s yet and that her name is [name]Riley[/name]. [name]Just[/name] a thought. I lke [name]Rylie[/name] (spelt anyway) much better than [name]Wylie[/name]!
