Will Cora get mispronounced Cara a lot?

My DH and I have finally both settled on a girl’s name we love, [name]Cora[/name]. My only doubt is that its so similar to the more well-known name [name]Cara[/name], which isn’t one of my favorite names. I’m worried our little girl would be called [name]Cara[/name] a lot, which would annoy me. Anyone have any experience with the name [name]Cora[/name] (your name, your child’s name, friend’s name, etc.) and know if this happens a lot?

I don’t think it will be a problem unless the name [name]Cara[/name] is really popular in your area. In 2012, according to ssa.gov, [name]Cara[/name] was #695 and [name]Cora[/name] was #155, and in the past [name]Cora[/name] has generally been more popular than [name]Cara[/name]. So I’m sure people will be at least as familiar with the name [name]Cora[/name] as the name [name]Cara[/name].

I don’t think that will be a problem at all!

No personal experiance but I don’t think this will be a issue at all.

I’ve loved the name [name]Cora[/name] ever since ‘The last of the mohicans’. Great choice! There’s no chance of mispronunciation, don’t worry.

I don’t think it would be a big problem. It is likely to happen sometimes but everyone has that at some stage. EG. My name is [name]Jasmine[/name] and for some reason people always call me [name]Jessica[/name] and they aren’t even that similar!

I grew up with a [name]Cora[/name] and never heard of this being an issue. [name]Cara[/name] and [name]Cora[/name] seem like 2 simple enough names, with distinct enough sounds, that I really don’t think you need to worry about it. It’s not like [name]Anna[/name] and [name]Anna[/name] - where one is pn An-na and the other is Oh-na. That’s a very different situation, imho!

Yes, exactly.

I’m sure it’ll happen sometimes but not often. [name]Stephanie[/name] and [name]Bethany[/name] get mixed up sometimes, [name]Kristen[/name] will occasionally be called [name]Krystal[/name], and [name]Lara[/name] will sometimes be called [name]Laura[/name].

No, I don’t see how it would be a problem. My name is [name]Cecilia[/name] and I get a lot of [name]Cecily[/name]/[name]Cecile[/name]/[name]Ceil[/name]. I’ve also recently acquired the nickname Cheli…

She’ll have to correct people occasionally, but who doesn’t?

I knew a woman named [name]Cora[/name] who was of Italian heritage and she never had any problems with her name being mispronouned. [name]Cara[/name] and [name]Cora[/name] sound quite different to my ears. I think most people are familiar with names like [name]Nora[/name] and [name]Flora[/name] so I don’t think a [name]Cora[/name] should have too many issues.

I doubt anyone would mistake [name]Cora[/name] for [name]Cara[/name], and [name]Cora[/name] is more popular right now. Nice choice, by the way!

Thanks for all the replies! We’re really in love with the name (the only girl name we both fell in love with), I feel much better after reading your responses. Yay!

I don’t think it will be a problem. [name]Cora[/name] is an established name. It is beautiful and I wouldn’t let this deter you from using it!

My daughter is [name]Cora[/name] which is very unusual where we live (unlike [name]Cara[/name] which is v popular). No one has called her [name]Cara[/name] yet and she is nearly 2! [name]Love[/name] the name (obviously)!
