Will or Bill?

I am considering [name]William[/name] for my boy.

I think [name]Bill[/name] sounds better with my last name, but is it too outdated and not recommended for a little boy? What if he starts using [name]Bill[/name] when he’s older, like an adolescent or adult?

Although I agree that [name]Bill[/name] Tahada sounds a bit better, I think you should go with [name]Will[/name] Tahada. [name]Will[/name] is a friendly, approachable and down-to-earth name. I don’t get the same image with [name]Bill[/name]. [name]Bill[/name] sounds tired and outdated. [name]Will[/name] Tahada is quite fine! Good luck, [name]Mischa[/name].

I like [name]Will[/name] better, but both are suitable. [name]Will[/name] does seems more modern to me.

[name]Bill[/name] is middle-aged. Definitely go with [name]Will[/name].

I think either technically sound fine with your last name, but I’ve personally always like [name]Will[/name] better than [name]Bill[/name]. [name]Will[/name] sounds like a younger, livelier guy. Plus, I never really understood how you get [name]Bill[/name] from [name]William[/name] anyway…Anyone know the answer to that?

Thank you all for your replies. I will soon be posting a poll for all names in contention. Nameberry is awesome. Thanks again.

I love the name [name]William[/name]. I like either [name]Will[/name] or [name]Billy[/name] best.

I actually like [name]Bill[/name] better. I have a 7 cousin that goes by [name]Billy[/name] and it’s never seemed dated, it fits him quite nicely actually. But [name]Will[/name] is really nice too.

[name]Bill[/name] from [name]Will[/name] = lots of names have a rhyming nickname tradition, like
[name]Bob[/name] from [name]Rob[/name] from [name]Robert[/name]
[name]Hob[/name] from [name]Rob[/name] from [name]Robert[/name] (fell into disuse)
[name]Posy[/name] from [name]Josie[/name] from [name]Josephine[/name]
[name]Polly[/name] from [name]Molly[/name] from [name]Mary[/name] (not quite sure how that happened, itself…)
[name]Maisie[/name] from [name]Daisy[/name] from [name]Margaret[/name] (because [name]Marguerite[/name] means daisy in French, I’ve read).
[name]Peg[/name] from [name]Meg[/name] from [name]Margaret[/name] (itself kind of weird)

Sort of relatedly…
[name]Nell[/name] from [name]Eleanor[/name] (and relatives) from an [name]Eleanor[/name]
[name]Nan[/name] and somehow [name]Nancy[/name] from [name]Ann/name from an [name]Anne[/name]

As to why B in [name]Bill[/name] from [name]William[/name]…well, w and b are both made with the lips, I suppose…different processes are going on with some of the others…
