I’m leaning toward [name_m]Felix[/name_m] for baby #2, due in Feb. Our first is [name_f]Jane[/name_f] [name_m]Clayton[/name_m] nn [name_f]Janie[/name_f]. I love [name_m]Felix[/name_m] bc it means “happy” and bc it feels slightly to the left of [name_f]Jane[/name_f] as an underused classic (and I like the idea of giving our son the more whimsical name and our daughter the more straightforward one.)
Our last name is 3 syllables, starting with Kin------, ending in -an. We have no set middle name yet.
Other first name contenders are:
[name_m]Frederick[/name_m] or [name_m]Alfred[/name_m] (nn [name_u]Freddie[/name_u])
[name_m]Louis[/name_m] (nn [name_m]Louie[/name_m])
[name_m]Adam[/name_m] (this is DH’s favorite, not mine, but I’m interested in how it sounds to others)
[name_f]One[/name_f] friend said that [name_m]Fred[/name_m] sounds like a proctologist (!) [name_m]Adam[/name_m] seems too caveman-like to me with sister [name_f]Jane[/name_f] (me [name_m]ADAM[/name_m], you [name_f]JANE[/name_f].) So we’re orbiting around [name_m]Felix[/name_m] and [name_m]Louis[/name_m]. I’m just afraid we’re going to regret [name_m]Felix[/name_m] when a crop of hipster Felixes comes out in about four years, but am I overthinking the trend thing? I love the creativity and discernment of all you Nameberries, so I figured you could help - we’re open to any underused classic with a few exceptions:
[name_m]Henry[/name_m], [name_m]William[/name_m], [name_m]Charles[/name_m], [name_m]Theodore[/name_m] (lovely but overused in our world)
[name_m]Thomas[/name_m] and [name_m]Wilson[/name_m] (family issue)
most names ending in k sound
names starting w J
nameberry-ish names trending heavily upward (see [name_u]August[/name_u]/us, [name_u]Max[/name_u], [name_m]Phineas[/name_m], [name_m]Oliver[/name_m], [name_m]Atticus[/name_m], [name_u]Rowan[/name_u])
[name_f]Do[/name_f] you live in a hipster area? If not, I wouldn’t worry about it. [name_m]Felix[/name_m] has been in or around the top 300-400 range since the 40s, so it’s actually not trendy like people think it is. [name_f]Jane[/name_f] and [name_m]Felix[/name_m] make a fine pair, although I would love to see [name_m]Louis[/name_m] used…
I prefer [name_m]Louis[/name_m] ([name_u]Lou[/name_u]-ee), but [name_m]Felix[/name_m] is also sweet. My only hesitation would be a concern that it may not fit your kid’s personality. It works best on a happy, go-lucky type. What if your child is shy or has a less than annoyingly cheerful personality? Tough call. I really do love both your options, though. Also, [name_m]Bastian[/name_m] ([name_m]Sebastian[/name_m]), [name_m]Cormac[/name_m], [name_m]Cabot[/name_m], Ashford or [name_u]Winslow[/name_u].
I prefer [name_m]Felix[/name_m] ! I really love this name. [name_m]Louis[/name_m], [name_u]Max[/name_u], [name_m]Phineas[/name_m], [name_m]William[/name_m] & [name_m]Adam[/name_m] are beautiful.
[name_m]Louis[/name_m] is my grandfather’s name. It is very common in [name_f]France[/name_f].
As you say, [name_m]Charles[/name_m], [name_m]Theodore[/name_m], [name_m]Henry[/name_m] are interesting but so overused.
If your favorite [name_m]Felix[/name_m], take it. Otherwise, you could have regrets later.
I think [name_m]Felix[/name_m] is cute! I would go for it. [name_f]Jane[/name_f] and [name_m]Felix[/name_m] make a cute sibset. [name_m]How[/name_m] about [name_m]Felix[/name_m] [name_m]Adam[/name_m] Kin___an? I would give him a more “normal” or classic middle name to fall back on in the event that he isn’t a fan when he’s older.
[name_m]Felix[/name_m] is pretty, but slightly cartoon-y… And as an adult, I can’t help but imagine a dishevelled and excentric men.
I’m incredibly biased, but oh please go with [name_m]Frederick[/name_m]! [name_m]Frederick[/name_m] & [name_f]Jane[/name_f], [name_f]Jane[/name_f] & [name_m]Frederick[/name_m]. [name_u]Freddie[/name_u] & [name_f]Janie[/name_f]! I can’t imagine where your friend got that terrible association! When I think of [name_m]Frederick[/name_m], I imagine an educated, well-behaved but very lively and smart little boy. It’s a very proper name that he can carry easily throughout his live, but it isn’t stiff or unapproachable.
[name_m]Frederick[/name_m] [name_m]Louis[/name_m] is absolutely perfect!
Thanks everyone! This is interesting. I didn’t even think about the idea the name [name_m]Felix[/name_m] wouldn’t fit the kid, but this is of course a possibility. Based on his parents, chances are about 1 in a 1000 that he’ll be a jock, but you never know…
[name_f]Glad[/name_f] there’s so much love for [name_m]Louis[/name_m] and [name_m]Frederick[/name_m]. I love them too.
I do like [name_m]Felix[/name_m] but I think it’s too related to the cat food. I would, however maybe use it as a middle name for a future son. I also prefer [name_f]Jane[/name_f] and [name_m]Louis[/name_m] to [name_f]Jane[/name_f] and [name_m]Felix[/name_m] though. I also really like [name_m]Frederick[/name_m] with [name_f]Jane[/name_f].
I can’t help but think what a great brother duo [name_m]Felix[/name_m] and [name_m]Louis[/name_m] would make. I love both names for their depth and history. I think of the saint before anything else with [name_m]Felix[/name_m] and the multiple Kings of [name_f]France[/name_f] for [name_m]Louis[/name_m]. [name_m]Alfred[/name_m] nn [name_u]Freddie[/name_u] would be my third choice. I think [name_m]Frederick[/name_m] is too long next to [name_f]Jane[/name_f]. I can see the [name_m]Tarzan[/name_m] and [name_f]Jane[/name_f] aspect with [name_m]Adam[/name_m] too! I don’t think you would regret any of your choices because they’re all standouts.
1 [name_f]Jane[/name_f] and [name_m]Felix[/name_m]
2 [name_f]Jane[/name_f] and [name_m]Louis[/name_m]
3 [name_f]Jane[/name_f] and [name_m]Alfred[/name_m]
4 [name_f]Jane[/name_f] and [name_m]Frederick[/name_m]
5 [name_f]Jane[/name_f] and [name_m]Adam[/name_m]
We, too, have a [name_f]Jane[/name_f] and are due any day with our little boy. We’re still trying to decide on his name! I short-listed [name_m]Felix[/name_m] but DH nixed it because our last name begins and ends with S and he thought [name_m]Felix[/name_m] S___s was too much.
Taking your other top choices into consideration, I like [name_m]Felix[/name_m] the best; it seems to pull [name_f]Jane[/name_f] even further into the chic, spunky category when paired with a [name_m]Felix[/name_m].
[name_m]Will[/name_m] you regret [name_m]Felix[/name_m]? No. And here’s why: how many times have you heard someone say they were once on the fence about a baby’s name (whether it was their own child, a relative, or a friend’s) and that now they can’t imagine that child named anything else?
My sister did not like our daughter’s name when we were still pregnant with her. Now, she says, she loves it and gushes over how well it suits her.
My point (blame my pregnancy hormones for this long-winded response!), if you give your child a name you love, you cannot go wrong.
I love [name_m]Felix[/name_m]–it’s our top pick if we ever have a boy! I think all of your names are great, though, so you can’t really go wrong. Other possibilities:
