Willa? Having some doubts

We chose the name [name_f]Willa[/name_f] [name_u]Quinn[/name_u] for our daughter due in [name_u]March[/name_u]. However, I’m having a few reservations.

We wanted a name full of spunk and sass, like big sister [name_u]Piper[/name_u] [name_f]Joy[/name_f]. I thought we hit the nail on the head with [name_f]Willa[/name_f], but now I’m worried it’s too sweet sounding?

We’ve told close family. No one has seemed to [name_u]LOVE[/name_u] it. Most just say, oh that’s different. Or that’s nice. A few mistook it for [name_f]Willow[/name_f]. My grandma STILL says [name_f]Willow[/name_f] after being corrected a few times. I’m worried we’re going to see a trend here with people mistaking it for [name_f]Willow[/name_f]. I like the name [name_f]Willow[/name_f], but my husband thinks it won’t age as well.

Is [name_f]Willa[/name_f] spunky enough to keep up with [name_u]Piper[/name_u]? I think I’m having a hard time gauging it because I don’t know any [name_m]IRL[/name_m].

This is just my opinion, but I think there are going to be a lot of people who’ll mistake [name_f]Willa[/name_f] for [name_f]Willow[/name_f], as [name_f]Willow[/name_f] is a more familiar name. My ex-husband’s last name is [name_m]Rhodes[/name_m] & I can’t tell you the number of times that he, our daughter, or me have been turned into Roses. When our daughter was born, his aunt called [name_f]Kiersten[/name_f] ([name_m]KEER[/name_m]-sten) [name_f]Krista[/name_f] for six months straight, & our daughter’s soccer coach kept calling her [name_f]Kristen[/name_f] (which is why she decided she was going to be [name_u]Kit[/name_u]…although a lot of people say “What? Kid?”). If you really love [name_f]Willa[/name_f], though, I’d use it, just w/the expectation that you (& eventually she) will need to correct people more than if you chose, say, [name_f]Olivia[/name_f] (which is definitely not the name you’d want to go w/[name_u]Piper[/name_u]).

I think Willa Quinn is great though if you’re having doubts it might be good to shop around for an another choice and take both to the hospitial.

I think [name_u]Piper[/name_u] [name_f]Joy[/name_f] and [name_f]Willa[/name_f] [name_u]Quinn[/name_u] sound great together, but I’m not a fan of [name_f]Willa[/name_f] myself. It seems incomplete, and I would definitely mistake it for [name_f]Willow[/name_f] at first if someone told me their name was [name_f]Willa[/name_f].

My daughter is Willa so I hope can shed light.

It gets a lot of compliments - people see it as striking, pretty, and like the Willa Cather association (which gives it some heft). Most family members and friends expressed love for it from the start, others have warmed to it after being unsure (and inevitably some must still not love it but I wouldn’t know - and now it’s on a real life kid, it’s trivial.) Probably a third of people ask first time if it’s the more popular Willow, but having to clarify a name is pretty common these days when names are more various and societies, more diverse.

We chose it as an honour name (to honour William), which helps, and because we’re dealing with a tricky last name - like Trudeau - so a lot of the more complex (and gorgeous but fusty) names - even Wilhelmina but also Theodora etc had to go. We need names that help you get to the last name on time, with mouth in the right spot, and Willa does that. I also really like the nicknames we use: Will and Wills (though it’s Willa most of the time.)

I find Willa and Piper well-matched - but there’s of course something softer/ quieter in the L sounds (same goes for Lily, Calla etc) and it might be that a stronger sounding name would suit you better - even Quinn!

I adore [name_f]Willa[/name_f] and think it’s adorable and spunky. [name_u]Piper[/name_u] and [name_f]Willa[/name_f] is perfect

I think [name_f]Willa[/name_f] is beautiful and much more spunky than the now common [name_f]Willow[/name_f]. [name_f]Willow[/name_f] to me seems mainstream and like it’s trying really hard to be out there and spunky but it’s not. [name_f]Willa[/name_f] seems fresh, spunky, and beautiful. It’s hard to imagine it on an older person because of the super common names I see on older people now. I think in the time your little [name_f]Willa[/name_f] grows up it will age really well for her and she’ll have a beautiful but not too cutesy name. [name_f]Willa[/name_f] is a strong name and a wonderful choice for your daughter. [name_f]Willa[/name_f] and [name_u]Piper[/name_u] are perfect together! They both have 5 letters and the second is i, it’s the perfect combination of not too close but wonderful sibling names. I think you’re right that you hit the nail on the head. Of course you’re going to have doubts, but I think once she’s born and named you’re going to find that [name_f]Willa[/name_f] [name_u]Quinn[/name_u] fits her perfectly!

I would expect [name_u]Quinn[/name_u] to be [name_u]Piper[/name_u]'s sister, not [name_f]Willa[/name_f], but both are lovely names. I do think [name_f]Willa[/name_f] will be mistaken for [name_f]Willow[/name_f] every now and then just because [name_f]Willow[/name_f] is the more popular name. My surname sounds very similar to one of the most popular English surnames, so of course it’s often mistaken for that, but honestly I don’t mind correcting people. You get used to it. Additionally, I don’t think “oh, that’s different” should be interpreted as negative feedback. It just means you’ve chosen a name people aren’t used to hearing. Once your daughter is born and your family and friends have a sweet little face to attach to [name_f]Willa[/name_f], it will simply become her name.

I think [name_f]Willa[/name_f] is definitely spunky and goes really well with [name_u]Piper[/name_u]. It does sound similar to willow, but a lot of names get misheard. I know an adult [name_f]Willa[/name_f] and she is very spunky. [name_f]Keri[/name_f] [name_m]Russell[/name_m]'s daughter is also a [name_f]Willa[/name_f].

I think [name_f]Willa[/name_f] & [name_u]Piper[/name_u] makes an awesome sibset. If you are looking to add spunk, you could possibly change up the middle name:

[name_f]Willa[/name_f] [name_f]Snow[/name_f]
[name_f]Willa[/name_f] [name_f]Kate[/name_f]
[name_f]Willa[/name_f] [name_f]Carys[/name_f]
[name_f]Willa[/name_f] [name_u]June[/name_u]
[name_f]Willa[/name_f] [name_f]Bea[/name_f]
[name_f]Willa[/name_f] [name_f]Hazel[/name_f]
[name_f]Willa[/name_f] [name_f]Starling[/name_f]
[name_f]Willa[/name_f] [name_f]Paige[/name_f]
[name_f]Willa[/name_f] [name_u]Sage[/name_u]
[name_f]Willa[/name_f] [name_u]Blaire[/name_u]

pp have said it well. “Oh that’s different” is not a bad thing at all. I do think you will have to correct people from time to time because [name_f]Willow[/name_f] is so common. I also like [name_f]Wilma[/name_f]- I see that more spunky than the softer [name_f]Willa[/name_f], but what really matters is that you like it.

I’m sorry you’ve been having such a tricky time finding the perfect one, is using [name_u]Quinn[/name_u] as a first still an option? I think it matches the spunk of [name_u]Piper[/name_u] that you’re looking for well and you still get to use a name that you both love (I believe it’s an honour name as well if I’m remembering correctly).

Otherwise, I like the suggestions of [name_u]Billie[/name_u] and [name_f]Delta[/name_f].

Still rooting for [name_u]Penny[/name_u] though!

To be honest, [name_f]Willow[/name_f] sounds better than [name_f]Willa[/name_f]. [name_f]Willow[/name_f] is soft and has a nicer image that comes to mind. [name_f]Willa[/name_f] is harsh and abrupt and I don’t really like it that much. You can also get more nicknames out of [name_f]Willow[/name_f] than [name_f]Willa[/name_f]. I actually knew a girl named [name_f]Willa[/name_f] and when I first heard her name, I also thought it was [name_f]Willow[/name_f].

all i can say is i remember seeing you first pick the name and i thought it was absolutely beautiful and still to this day my love for it hasn’t faulted!! i think i would actually scream on the inside if i were to meet [name_u]Piper[/name_u] [name_f]Joy[/name_f] amd [name_f]Willa[/name_f] [name_u]Quinn[/name_u] - sound like a match made in heaven!!

[name_f]Willa[/name_f] [name_u]Quinn[/name_u] is stunning!

I think [name_f]Willa[/name_f] [name_u]Quinn[/name_u] and [name_u]Piper[/name_u] [name_f]Joy[/name_f] make a perfect pair!! I wouldn’t change a thing about it!

To be perfectly honest, [name_f]Willa[/name_f] doesn’t seem like a spunky name to me. It sounds more mellow if anything, like the word willow or wilting, but that doesn’t make it a bad name by any means.

Unfortunately, people are probably going to mishear her name a lot throughout her life. If that’s something you’re willing to accept then I wouldn’t worry about it. People often mistake my name for [name_f]Karen[/name_f] but I just politely correct them.

I actually prefer the name [name_f]Willow[/name_f] to [name_f]Willa[/name_f]. It’s a beautiful nature sounding type name, and maybe she wouldn’t have to correct so many people with [name_f]Willow[/name_f]. It’s completely up to you and what you like though.

And congratulations, you’re an expecting mommy in [name_u]March[/name_u] too.

I think [name_f]Willa[/name_f] [name_u]Quinn[/name_u] is quite lovely, and I do find [name_f]Willa[/name_f] a strong and feisty name. [name_m]Even[/name_m] though the w and l sounds are softer than the p of [name_u]Piper[/name_u], there’s a real spunkiness in this compact, neat and striking name. It’s easy to pronounce, spell and pick up on even when unfamiliar at first. Because it’s similar to [name_f]Willow[/name_f] there will be some correcting, but I find that happens with lots of names. So, in all I think it’s a great choice, but nothing wrong with making another short list to toss around if you’re having doubts.
