Wintery Baby Names

Hello all, DH and I are having a heck of a time settling on a name for our little girl due in [name_u]December[/name_u]. Given that simply offering up names I’ve collected over the years and scanning the SS lists hasn’t yielded a lot of results I thought I’d take a different tactic.

Please give me all your names that conjure up a wintery image. Anything that feels like snow, aspen trees, a ski lodge, buffalo check plaid, hot chocolate, oversize sweaters, [name_u]Christmas[/name_u] lights, etc. would be wonderful. No specific style of name is preferred, I want to hear what you all think is wintery and magical.

Thanks!

The most obvious ones are [name_f]Noelle[/name_f], [name_f]Natalie[/name_f], [name_u]Winter[/name_u] and [name_f]Snow[/name_f]. The following names feel winter-y as well:
[name_f]Ophelia[/name_f]
[name_f]Anastasia[/name_f]
[name_f]Alexandra[/name_f]
[name_f]Alexandrine[/name_f]
[name_f]Louisa[/name_f]
[name_f]Marianne[/name_f]
[name_f]Iphigenia[/name_f]
[name_f]Demelza[/name_f]
[name_f]Hermione[/name_f]
[name_f]Ceridwen[/name_f]
[name_f]Sibylla[/name_f]

What a fun challenge! Some wintery names I came up with:

[name_f]Alaska[/name_f]
[name_u]Aspen[/name_u]
[name_f]Aster[/name_f] (Welsh for “star”)
[name_f]Demi[/name_f] (short for [name_u]Demeter[/name_u], Greek goddess of winter)
[name_f]Eira[/name_f] (Welsh for “snow”)
[name_f]Estrella[/name_f] (Spanish for “star”)
[name_f]Gabrielle[/name_f] (like the [name_u]Angel[/name_u] [name_m]Gabriel[/name_m])
[name_f]Holiday[/name_f]
[name_f]Holly[/name_f]
Iclyn
[name_f]Ivy[/name_f]
[name_u]January[/name_u]
[name_u]Kari[/name_u] (Turkish for “covered with snow”)
[name_f]Lumi[/name_f] (Finnish for “snow”)
[name_u]Meredith[/name_u] (nickname [name_f]Merry[/name_f] is a cute way to honor a Christmastime baby)
[name_f]Natalie[/name_f] (means “[name_u]Christmas[/name_u] [name_u]Day[/name_u]”)
[name_f]Neve[/name_f] (Italian for “snow”)
[name_f]Noelle[/name_f]
[name_u]Oakley[/name_u]
[name_u]Robin[/name_u]
[name_f]Scarlett[/name_f]
[name_f]Snow[/name_f]
[name_f]Stella[/name_f] (Latin for “star”)
[name_u]Winter[/name_u]
[name_u]Wren[/name_u]

For me, [name_f]Ginevra[/name_f] is the perfect ‘winter’ name; a snow-laden meadow in the mountains backed by dark fir trees, with animal tracks in the snow. Frosty, icy, wintery, and gorgeous.

Most of these are ‘cold’ names - that’s my view of winter! The cosy, hygge-like names are completely different for

@adelina_sophia - Thank you! I’m hoping to avoid anything too obvious or overly Christmasy but I think you hit on some good possibilities with [name_f]Ivy[/name_f], [name_f]Lumi[/name_f], [name_f]Eira[/name_f], & [name_f]Noor[/name_f].

@handsallover - I think you’re right on with [name_f]Ophelia[/name_f], [name_f]Anastasia[/name_f], and [name_f]Hermione[/name_f]. Thanks!

@violet1296 - Thanks! [name_f]Alaska[/name_f], [name_u]Aspen[/name_u], [name_f]Ivy[/name_f], & [name_f]Scarlett[/name_f] have all made our long list.

@morning_glory - I absolutely love your image of [name_f]Ginevra[/name_f], definitely something to consider. I think we’re looking more for the icy, magical names as most of your cozy, [name_u]Christmas[/name_u] list feels more springy to me. I particularly like [name_f]Freya[/name_f], [name_f]Saskia[/name_f], [name_f]Guinevere[/name_f], & [name_f]Minna[/name_f]. From your Christmasy list I like, [name_f]Phillipa[/name_f] and [name_f]Beatrice[/name_f].

Excited to see what other people come up with!

@saintdollface - Thanks! I quite like [name_f]Clara[/name_f] and [name_f]Elka[/name_f].

@kipperbo1 - Thank you! Adding [name_f]Elspeth[/name_f] and [name_f]Isadora[/name_f] to the list!

@autumn13 - Thanks for the suggestions! I agree that [name_f]Fleur[/name_f] and [name_f]Aurora[/name_f] certainly match that imagery.

I’m sure that this has been suggested above (I only skimmed) but aside from the obvious names ([name_f]Noelle[/name_f], [name_f]Natalia[/name_f]/[name_f]Natalie[/name_f], [name_f]Carol[/name_f]/[name_f]Caroline[/name_f]/[name_f]Carolina[/name_f], [name_f]Neve[/name_f] (in Portuguese for instance this is the word for snow), etc.) [name_m]Nicholas[/name_m] variations pop to mind, for [name_m]Saint[/name_m] [name_u]Nick[/name_u] of course. [name_u]Nichole[/name_u] and [name_u]Nicola[/name_u], [name_f]Nicoletta[/name_f]/[name_f]Nicolette[/name_f], [name_f]Nika[/name_f], and so on.

[name_f]Ailsa[/name_f]
[name_f]Anais[/name_f]
[name_f]Anya[/name_f]
[name_f]Annika[/name_f]
[name_f]Bianca[/name_f]
[name_f]Henrietta[/name_f]
[name_f]Ines[/name_f]
[name_f]Isolde[/name_f] (“ice ruler”)
[name_f]Jessica[/name_f]
[name_f]Katerina[/name_f]
[name_f]Lenore[/name_f]
[name_f]Lilith[/name_f]
[name_f]Persephone[/name_f]
[name_f]Petra[/name_f]
[name_f]Scarlett[/name_f]
[name_f]Viola[/name_f]
[name_f]Wilhelmina[/name_f]
[name_f]Willa[/name_f]

I love the name [name_f]Lumi[/name_f], meaning snow.

It may not be “icy”, but the first name that popped in my head was [name_f]Clementine[/name_f] because the orange is ubiquitous at [name_u]Christmas[/name_u] and getting an orange in your stocking is an old tradition. Also I love [name_f]Neve[/name_f], sorry if it has already be suggested, it means snow. I also love the suggestion of [name_f]Isolde[/name_f]!

We’re also due with a little girl in [name_u]December[/name_u]! Congrats!! We’re in a similar naming situation (plus, add in two older girls who are very opinionated with names, lol). My older daughters want her to be [name_f]Noelle[/name_f] [name_f]Elena[/name_f] (loosely translated to [name_u]Christmas[/name_u] light). We also really like [name_f]Ingrid[/name_f], [name_f]Freya[/name_f] and [name_f]Elisabetta[/name_f]. They all have that wintery feel to me. I think lots of Scandinavian names would work.

@beort12 - Thanks for the suggestions! I’m hoping to avoid anything stereotypically [name_u]Christmas[/name_u] though I do like [name_f]Caroline[/name_f].

@sarah1800 - Thank you! You’ve touched on several that were already on our list: [name_f]Scarlett[/name_f], [name_f]Viola[/name_f], [name_f]Willa[/name_f], [name_f]Persephone[/name_f], etc., but I’m definitely adding [name_f]Ailsa[/name_f], [name_f]Annika[/name_f], [name_f]Henrietta[/name_f] (love [name_f]Hattie[/name_f]!), and [name_f]Isolde[/name_f] to the list to discuss with DH. Out of curiosity, which pronunciation for [name_f]Isolde[/name_f] do you prefer?

@whitegardenia - Thanks! [name_f]Lumi[/name_f] is definitely one for us to look at.

@kashed22 - Thank you! I love that unique take for a [name_u]December[/name_u] baby. My mom still gives all of us a [name_f]Clementine[/name_f] in our stockings so that would be a sweet touch.

@bluelavender - Congrats to you as well! Isn’t arguing about a name fun but oh so frustrating lol. I love [name_f]Freya[/name_f], and [name_f]Elisabetta[/name_f] is a new suggestion. I’ll definitely mull that one over.
