What do you think of [name_m]Witt[/name_m] or [name_u]Whit[/name_u] for a boy? I like it, but I have some reservations. For starters, it’s very nickname-y, and I can’t come up with a longer version I like. I’m also worried most people will think it’s a girl’s name. I think it sounds good for a boy, but that may only be because I have a male friend named [name_m]Witt[/name_m] and he is a very masculine, outdoorsy, tough guy, so perhaps my perception of the name is skewed. [name_f]Do[/name_f] you automatically hear it and think [name_u]Whitney[/name_u]/girl? My other hesitation is because of the easy teasing nicknames - dimwit, twit, etc. I wonder if that would be a big problem? The [name_m]Witt[/name_m] I know likes his name and says he never really got teased for it, and I know sometimes it just depends on the kid. I also know kids can make nasty taunts out of any name, but still, it makes me pause even though I love the sound of the name.
Finally, how would you spell it? From what I understand [name_u]Whit[/name_u] is the original, peaking in 1886 at #645 (so never very popular). However I’m debating whether [name_m]Witt[/name_m] looks more masculine and prevents it from looking like the nn for [name_u]Whitney[/name_u]. The downside of the [name_m]Witt[/name_m] spelling, aside from not being the original way, is that I could see people easily assuming it’s a misspelling of [name_m]Will[/name_m].
I think [name_u]Whit[/name_u] is extremely handsome! It does make me think it’s a nickname for [name_u]Whitney[/name_u], but I actually [name_u]LOVE[/name_u] that about it.
If it were me, I’d go with the traditional spelling. There’s something about having the H in there that makes it a little more classic. If you like the look of [name_m]Witt[/name_m], what have you considered [name_m]Wyatt[/name_m]?
[name_m]Whittaker[/name_m] like pp said. Also Whittier or [name_m]Hewitt[/name_m] or Truitt or [name_m]Pruitt[/name_m]. If you just use it by itself I prefer Whitt. If it’s a nn I would spell it how it’s spelled in the full name except Truitt or [name_m]Pruitt[/name_m].
Yeah, I thought about [name_m]Whittaker[/name_m] as a way to make it more substantial but I don’t like it, so I’d rather just use [name_m]Witt[/name_m]. My friend [name_m]Witt[/name_m]'s real name is Willett which I don’t like much either. [name_m]Ah[/name_m] this is so hard!
Another option for a long form is Whitsun, another name for Pentecost (White [name_f]Sunday[/name_f]). The religious aspect is not for everyone, but I really like the soft dignity of the name, and the Puritan vibe like [name_f]Remember[/name_f], [name_f]Thankful[/name_f] and [name_f]Easter[/name_f].
There was a blogger who used it, the nameberry blog mentioned it once you can just search it for more information.
[name_m]Witt[/name_m] or [name_u]Whit[/name_u] on his own is not for me, but I’m not into surname names or nickname names, which is what they both sound like to me.
I like the sound, but would only use it as a nickname for Whitsun myself.
