Word Names: Cool and creative, or just plain weird?

[name]Prior[/name] to reading the book Evermore by [name]Alyson[/name] [name]Noel[/name], I took notice of the fact that the main character was named [name]Ever[/name] and her best friend was [name]Haven[/name].

Lately, it seems to have become nouveau trendy to give kids names that well, aren’t names (think [name]Snow[/name], [name]Winter[/name], [name]November[/name], [name]Afternoon[/name], [name]Seven[/name]). As a twin in a sibset of [name]Reason[/name] and [name]Honor[/name], I can report that from my experience, people’s reactions can go either way. Either they think our names are wicked cool or they laugh/eyeroll/gasp in horror.

What do you think about these names?

I adore word names! I love your name, and your sibling’s name. I have known quite a few people with unusual names. They didn’t like them at first, but now love it. Some people react bad like “oh they will be teased” blah blah blah. I figure, use a name you love [unless it’s offensive]. I really don’t let other’s opinions change me much. A name can be teased on no matter the name, and it may not even be the name of the person but the person themselves. [name]Reason[/name] and [name]Honor[/name] are both on my lists.

I love hearing opinions of people with unusual names, and how they like them!

I personally like word names. I think they can be creative and neat, but it honestly DOES depend on the word. I find [name]Reason[/name] (no offense) to be a little awkward, but I have not lived with it, so I can’t say for sure how it would be - but others I find just dated and tacky - like [name]Heaven[/name], [name]Trinity[/name], [name]Destiny[/name]…ones that are related or semi-related to religious notions. Others I find cool and inspiring. I tend to question how well they age, but I do like them.

I have a great-great grandfather [name]Reason[/name]! I have always considered using [name]Reason[/name] as a middle name. His surname was [name]Sailor[/name], which would also be a cool middle name.

Anyway, I love word names, they are so refreshing. [name]Winter[/name], [name]Snow[/name], [name]January[/name], [name]September[/name], [name]Summer[/name], [name]Lake[/name], [name]Ocean[/name], etc. They all remind me of something/someone and I love that. They remind me of a feeling - a feeling of pure happiness from when I was a little girl.

I love word names, but like flick said it depends on the word, If I’m going to choose a word name I’d prefer it conjure up a beautiful image or meaning, rather than just having a pretty sound, names like [name]Seven[/name] have no particular meaning to me (though I know the # has some spiritual connections in some religions and cultures) on the other hand names like [name]Haven[/name], [name]Harbor[/name], [name]Holiday[/name], [name]Sunday[/name], [name]Evening[/name] and [name]River[/name] all have beautiful meanings/imagery that I think would be a positive association with my child

My son is [name]Bravery[/name]- I call him Brave- We love his name! We’ve gotten some weird reactions, but overall people were inspired that we named our son an attribute that we pray he IS as a man!
