- Genuinely I think [name_f]Romilly[/name_f] and [name_f]Briony[/name_f] are totally normal names? (Am [name_f]English[/name_f] so that might be different where you are, but they just seen like ordinary, pretty girls names to me). [name_m]Tolliver[/name_m] is less common but not that weird? - As others have said, bullies will find any reason to pick on a person they want to pick on. I am racking my brain to think of a time when someone at my school was bullied just[name_f][/name_f] for their name, and I can’t think of one. There was a kid called [name_m]Justin[/name_m] and we called him ‘Justin Time’ sometimes (har har), but it wasn’t mean spirited. I think what you’ve got to watch out for is names that can be linked to ‘rude’ words, eg if your surname is [name_m]Ennis[/name_m] and you name your child [name_m]Peter[/name_m], they’re going to have issues. To use one from your list, [name_m]Hyperion[/name_m] probably wouldn’t go down well because it contains the word hyper. It’s that sort of thing that kids notice and pick on. Names that are just a bit unusual aren’t that[name_f][/name_f] much of a target because… [name_f][/name_f]
- Kids are generally more tolerant and accepting of things than adults. If you tell a kid the new girl at school is called [name_f]Aphrodite[/name_f] they will just accept it, because to them, it’s just the label that goes with that person. And besides… [name_f][/name_f]
- Names are getting weirder and more out there all the time. We’ve gone from every third person being called [name_m]Thomas[/name_m] and [name_f]Catherine[/name_f] to things like [name_f]Athena[/name_f], [name_m]Ajax[/name_m] and [name_f]Ophelia[/name_f] being commonplace. [name_m]The[/name_m] top ten names used to account for almost all names, but now, if you look at the data, a name in the top ten might only be given to a tiny percentage of kids. There’s a wider field of ‘acceptable’ name options so ‘popular’ names are less all-encompassing than they used to be, which means kids are encountering weird and wonderful names all the time and it’s not going to faze them.
