[name_u]Love[/name_u] the name [name_f]Isobel[/name_f]. Would seriously consider it for a first name. However I really don’t like the name [name_u]Izzy[/name_u]. [name_f]Do[/name_f] you think it’s possible to have a name [name_f]Isobel[/name_f] but not have people get into the habit of calling her [name_u]Izzy[/name_u]? I don’t mind the nickname [name_f]Belle[/name_f] or Isbel….but not [name_u]Izzy[/name_u]! Waste of time trying to prevent it ? [name_u]Or[/name_u] doable?
it is entirely possible to have an isobel who isn’t an izzy - one of my friends is a ‘just’ isobel - but you can’t rule out the possibility that as she gets older she will choose to be izzy. therefore, if you really hate izzy, you should probably avoid isobel given that you can’t know how your daughter will choose to go.
I do think some people might call her [name_u]Izzy[/name_u] but she or you could correct them
I agree. We never call our daughter [name_u]Izzy[/name_u].
I’ve never met an [name_f]Isabel[/name_f] / [name_f]Isobel[/name_f] that got called [name_u]Izzy[/name_u] unless they wanted to be, and I’ve known a fair few. Maybe a few minor corrections here and there at worst, but I think you’d probably be good!
I agree with this. You can avoid Izzy, but how would you feel if she chose to go by Izzy?
I think it’s possible to avoid the nickname [name_u]Izzy[/name_u], but some people might want to call her that or she might want to be called that herself.
As someone who has avoided being called the obvious nickname to my real name, I think it’s fully possible. The caveat to that is I never wanted to be called it! I agree with previous posters that if you enforce it from the time she’s born, avoiding [name_u]Izzy[/name_u] is an easy correction and truly doable. However, it’s also the most obvious nickname for [name_f]Isobel[/name_f], so there’s a chance it’s something she would want to go by when she’s older!
In the end, I think it truly matters how much your feelings about [name_u]Izzy[/name_u] outweigh or are eclipsed by your feelings about [name_f]Isobel[/name_f]. Is it worth it? Perhaps, but it’s also totally okay if it’s not!
She doesn’t have to go by Izzy! I grew up with a next door neighbor named Isobel, and I called her Izzy because we were really close as children. But at school and such places, she was alway only Isobel.
I knew someone who was named [name_f]Sabelle[/name_f]. Sounds like [name_f]Isobel[/name_f] but without the ‘i’ if you really want to avoid the nickname [name_u]Izzy[/name_u] but keep the name, you could also go for this. I wouldn’t spell it Sobel though as that could lead to confusion. This way nn can still be [name_f]Belle[/name_f]. [name_f]Hope[/name_f] this helps.
Would depend entirely on her. If she likes it then would you try to stop her? I think [name_u]Izzy[/name_u] or [name_f]Issie[/name_f] is really cute! [name_f]Belle[/name_f] has a totally different vibe from [name_u]Izzy[/name_u]. [name_u]Izzy[/name_u] has much more of a bite!
in all honesty every isobel, isabel, isobelle and isabelle i know inevitably gets called izzy/issie even if they don’t particularly love the nickname or they aren’t called that by their parents i think it’s one of those names that people naturally shorten without even really thinking about it.
so yes, i do think it would be quite difficult to stray away from izzy unless you corrected people every single time but even then that probably wouldn’t prevent friends or teachers from using the nickname.
if you really hate izzy i personally would avoid isobel.
Damn, such a shame! Thanks for the input. [name_f]Do[/name_f] you think it would be too weird to use the name Isbel ( so skipping the “o” ) as a first name to shorten it or would this be potentially mistaken for a typo? I really like how Isbel sounds!?
I think it would be mistaken for a typo. And she would still probably be called [name_u]Izzy[/name_u]. If you really like it go for it but I’d start looking for different names.
Thanks. I’ll stick with the other name we have picked which is [name_f]Summer[/name_f]
I think [name_u]Izzy[/name_u] could be easy to avoid… [name_f]Isobel[/name_f] is my favorite name, and I would probably do [name_f]Isobel[/name_f] nn [name_f]Bella[/name_f], if anything, but love just [name_f]Isobel[/name_f] too. I’m reading a biography of an [name_f]Isobel[/name_f] (she’s a missionary to [name_f]China[/name_f] in the 1950s), and she went exclusively by [name_f]Belle[/name_f], so I think it would be fairly easy to avoid [name_u]Izzy[/name_u]? Either way, love [name_f]Isobel[/name_f] and would love to meet more of them!
[name_f]Beautiful[/name_f] name! You will have a lovely daughter I’m sure.
I honestly think any name beginning with Is-, is going to be called [name_u]Izzy[/name_u] some point in her life. [name_f]Isabella[/name_f], [name_f]Isabelle[/name_f], [name_f]Isadora[/name_f], [name_u]Isa[/name_u], whatever. But people can just call her [name_f]Isobel[/name_f]. I know an [name_f]Isabelle[/name_f] (Which is pretty much the same thing) who is just [name_f]Isobel[/name_f].
[name_f]Isobel[/name_f] is beautiful and I don’t think [name_u]Izzy[/name_u] is an unavoidable nickname. I know Isabels/Isobels who go by their full first names only and new people they meet don’t assume they go by either [name_u]Izzy[/name_u], [name_u]Bell[/name_u] or [name_f]Bella[/name_f]. I think people tend to take the lead of the name wearer when it comes to nicknames, so unless your daughter wants to go by [name_u]Izzy[/name_u] I don’t think you’ll have an issue.
I was just going to write this exact post, but searched first and found yours. I love the name [name_f]Isobel[/name_f], especially spelled that way, but just really don’t like the nn [name_u]Izzy[/name_u]. What did you decide to do? Did you go with [name_f]Isobel[/name_f]?
