Would Franklin be doomed to be called Frank?

Tossing around the name [name_u]Franklin[/name_u] (amongst our other contenders [name_m]Felix[/name_m] and Frederick). We like [name_u]Franklin[/name_u] but strongly dislike the nickname [name_m]Frank[/name_m]. [name_u]Frankie[/name_u] is quite as bad, but I’m not to fond of it either. Are there any other nicknames for [name_u]Franklin[/name_u] I’m unaware of? [name_u]Or[/name_u] would it be possible to forgo nicknames altogether and get people to just call him [name_u]Franklin[/name_u]?

[name_m]Frank[/name_m] is definitely the most natural but if youre willing to stretch it a bit you might consider…

[name_f]Lin[/name_f]
[name_u]Flynn[/name_u]
[name_u]Finn[/name_u]
[name_f]Flick[/name_f]

I actually think [name_m]Frank[/name_m] is avoidable (it has a rather dated image so I doubt a young [name_u]Franklin[/name_u] would want to go by Frank), although I’m not sure about both [name_m]Frank[/name_m] and [name_u]Frankie[/name_u] being avoidable. I’d instinctively shorten [name_u]Franklin[/name_u] to [name_u]Frankie[/name_u] myself, so if you don’t love the idea of that I’d probably stick to your other top choices!

I could see [name_m]Frank[/name_m] being avoided because as previous posters have said, it’s quite dated, and a boy would probably not choose to be called that. [name_u]Frankie[/name_u] feels quite natural though, and it’s likely he’d be called that at some point. so it’s worth considering how bothered you’d be if he chose to go by [name_u]Frankie[/name_u] at some point.

I don’t think [name_u]Franklin[/name_u] would ever be called [name_m]Frank[/name_m]. Maybe on a sports team? Maybe

Hmm, it’s a tricky one because it’s possible he will like [name_m]Frank[/name_m] or [name_u]Frankie[/name_u] and it’s very possible other people will call him that intuitively, or because they want to? Since it’s a fairly obvious nickname, it might be hard to avoid unless he takes aversion to it?

Flinn/Flynn, [name_u]Finn[/name_u], [name_u]Fran[/name_u], [name_m]Link[/name_m] (?) as nicknames?

To be honest, if you hate the name [name_m]Frank[/name_m] that much, you probably shouldn’t use the name [name_u]Franklin[/name_u]. At least not as a first name. While he is still little, you can try to insist he be called by his full name. But as soon as he starts school, it is out of your control what his friends call him. [name_m]Even[/name_m] if you do try to call him a non-Frank nickname at home to establish it before someone can say [name_m]Frank[/name_m], it is possible he himself will want to use different nicknames at school and at home.

Not sure if I’ve already said this on one of your threads as it’s a long held view: [name_m]Frank[/name_m] isn’t nice to me (it’s a honk noise) and [name_u]Frankie[/name_u] isn’t that nice either esp for a boy. [name_u]Strong[/name_u] view I know, but I really don’t warm to either - and think [name_u]Franklin[/name_u] will get [name_m]Frank[/name_m] at some stage and by some group or person in his like. I much prefer [name_m]Frederick[/name_m] and [name_m]Felix[/name_m], and there just be other F and -lin names out there!

I would establish a nickname right from the start. [name_u]Franklin[/name_u], nicknamed [name_u]Finn[/name_u] or [name_u]Flynn[/name_u]. [name_u]Franklin[/name_u] is a distinguished sounding name to fall back on as one matures. I think it is kind of cool to have a formal name when needed and a more informal name for everyday and less formal occasions.

[name_m]Just[/name_m] curious, are you choosing an F name to honor someone in your family who also has a name beginning with F? If so, I can help you with other names that you might like better, even though F does not have many good names to choose from.

Many people insist on full name. I love [name_u]Franklin[/name_u] and [name_m]Frank[/name_m], but not [name_u]Frankie[/name_u].

The thing is, the child might love [name_m]Frank[/name_m] or [name_u]Frankie[/name_u].
