Totally agree with everyone else.
I think [name]Katniss[/name] is a beautiful name! I don’t think it would be cruel at all, she is a literary hero. It would just be like naming your kid [name]Scout[/name] or [name]Atticus[/name] after To Kill A Mockingbird, which many people do, in fact I know a [name]Scout[/name]. I would totally consider [name]Katniss[/name] for a name.
I don’t see [name]Katniss[/name] becoming the next [name]Jessica[/name] anytime soon. (let’s not forget, we’re talking about [name]Suzanne[/name] [name]Collins[/name], not [name]Shakespeare[/name]) Call me cynical, but I think once the Hunger Games movies/books run their course, [name]Katniss[/name] will be looked at as a passing fad.
Completely agree.
I don’t think it’s cruel and I don’t think it’s all that trendy either. Trendy implies a more widespread use then I expect it will ever get, I mean sure the movie will give it a boost but the books have been out since 2008. If it was going to have a huge jump we should have seen signs of it by now. I keep seeing people compare it to Twilight but I don’t think it’s anywhere close to similar. The names in Twilight were already well known and many where rising before the books came out. [name]Katniss[/name] is a completely new name, while I don’t doubt it will get some use I don’t think it will ever be close to common.
Now as a name,I like it. I think it’s neat. Not my favorite but it roles off the tongue nicely and is nicely reminiscent of more popular names (ie. [name]Katherine[/name] and [name]Agnes[/name]) while still being distinct. If you like it I think you should go for it.
Maybe for a middle name, but I wouldn’t for a first name. Or if you use it as a first name use a middle name that is ‘normal’ for lack of a better word…more classic or traditional. That way if your child hates the name, she has the middle name to fall back on.
I have no problem with the name itself, but I really can’t imagine it being used on an actual person. Like many of others have said, it’s wouldn’t be cruel to name her that, but given the time where the movie and the books are pretty popular I think you would get a lot of funny looks. If that doesn’t bother you though, I say go for it.
Not cruel, but highly trendy.
I’ve taken a huge liking to the name as well, but I wouldn’t use it any time soon.
I would have said NO NO NO!! before reading the books, but she really is such a sweet, inspirational character that I do now see the attraction to the name. I’d possibly consider it as a middle name if I didn’t think it’d be ever associated with the books.
A safer choice might be [name]Primrose[/name], which is beautiful, legit and not trendy. Good luck!
It wouldn’t be so bad because she could shorten it to [name]Kat[/name] and it’s the name of a plant. People would probably assume you were a silly teenager though. I mean I wouldn’t, but many people out there associate it with something a teenager trying to be hip and cool would choose.
I much prefer her sister’s name: [name]Primrose[/name]
Oh and it’s extremely close to cat p#ss and cat nip. [name]Just[/name] saying.
No. [name]Katniss[/name] is also a plant. I like it for a girl
I wouldn’t do it. I wouldn’t want a name to be that tied to a period–and I think it would. If you still like it in a few years and it’s aged well, use it then. To me, the name sounds strange with the -niss ending.
“oh, like the hunger games?” how creative of you. You’ll totally be sick of hearing about it in the next few years. It would be the equivalent of calling your daughter [name]Zena[/name], oh like [name]Zena[/name] Warrior [name]Princess[/name]…
I love the character, but it sounds pretty awful in my book.
I like [name_f]Katniss[/name_f], although I’m not sure I want my daughter to grow up to be her. The name itself, however, isn’t so pretty. I also hear “cat piss.” Plus, everyone will constantly reference Hunger Games when you mention her name. Likewise, I really like the name [name_f]Zelda[/name_f]. [name_m]Even[/name_m] though it’s a legitimate name, and I love, love, love the video games, I couldn’t handle having everyone think I named my daughter after a Nintendo game (even if it was partially true :p).
[name_f]Katniss[/name_f] strongly reminds me of cattiness. I do really like the name [name_f]Kat[/name_f] / [name_f]Cat[/name_f], even if it isn’t short for anything. I really like the suggestion of [name_f]Kathrine[/name_f] [name_f]Agnes[/name_f] nn [name_f]Katniss[/name_f]. [name_f]Mary[/name_f] [name_f]Katherine[/name_f] can be nicknamed Merricat, which is my absolute favorite and is a character in “We Have Always Lived In the Castle” by [name_f]Shirley[/name_f] [name_m]Jackson[/name_m] (great book).
I honestly loved the name before Hunger Games, still do. But people are going to assume, at least for awhile, that you are a huge Hunger Games fan, a “Groupie”, and into fads. That happened when [name_m]Harry[/name_m] [name_m]Potter[/name_m] was fresh. People thought all [name_f]Hermione[/name_f]'s and [name_f]Ginny[/name_f]'s were inspired, and stolen from HP. Which wasn’t the case. But now [name_f]Hermione[/name_f]'s and [name_f]Ginny[/name_f] are just cute names, and not entirely HP. Same with [name_f]Aurora[/name_f], [name_m]Sebastian[/name_m], [name_u]Ariel[/name_u], etc. if you love it, do it regardless. In the book, see you will get that a lot, but in the book [name_u]Gale[/name_u] nicknamed her [name_f]Cat[/name_f] Nip which is cute in a way, but are you okay with that? I personally like [name_f]Kat[/name_f] as a nn for [name_f]Katniss[/name_f].
